Sorting and organization options for the "Memories" tab

Right now the "Memories" tab for some people looks quite jumbled. The order shown is simply the order in which the memory was added, but this rarely reflects any sort of logical sequence. The images of a person at different periods of their life are often jumbled next to each other whereas closely related memories may be far apart.

The more memories are added the more messy it looks. This is paradoxical since oftentimes an additional memory or set of memories can add a lot to a person's story, but with the current layout uploading more memories can also make it harder for people to navigate through them and figure out exactly how everything fits together. The layout is especially unhelpful to those who are unfamiliar with the images and just want to see what other people have uploaded.

It would be nice to be able to sort the order of the memories (images, documents, audio, etc) on a person's "Memories" page, by chronological order, album, tags, or perhaps even just by dragging and dropping. It would also be useful to be able to collapse similar or related images into a single tile since sets of photos or stories that go together take up a lot of screen space, and tend to overcrowd single images that are just as important.

In my opinion something along these lines would make the "Memories" tab easier to use and more functional as well as aesthetically pleasing.

  • We have been told by FS folks that sorting is a future feature. Like almost all other future features, we are not told when such a feature will be available.

It is entirely possible that this will not become available until the Memories section is reworked and it becomes "open-edit" like the rest of the tree. This is something that Ron "Family Tree Guy" Tanner has mentioned in his Facebook Q&A sessions.
