  • Be careful with this one - according to Wikipedia, "Appleby-in-Westmorland is a market town and civil parish in the Eden district, in the county of Cumbria, ... The town's name was simply Appleby, until the local government changes of 1974. When a successor parish was formed for the former borough of Appleby, the council effected a change in the town's name, to preserve the historic county's name" (my emphasis).

The 1887, John Bartholomew's "Gazetteer of the British Isles" starts off simply as "Appleby.-- market and co. town of Westmorland, in the pars. of A. St Lawrence and A. St Michael, ... It consists of A. proper, on the left bank of the river, and Old A., or Bongate, on the right bank. The township of A. is identical with A. proper." (See URL http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/pla... ) So Appleby there, not Appleby-in-Westmorland.

Of course, what the forms used in indexing have been, I wouldn't know.

'Thank You' so much for your resposne.

    But ...

    That said ...

Respectfully, "... the additions and changes you suggested concerning Appleby-in-Westmorland, Westmorland, England and Appleby-in-Westmorland, Cumbria, England have [ NOT ] been made in [ "List" of "Standardised Place Names" (Database) in "Familysearch".

All that appears to have been done is the addition of "Appleby-in-Westmorland" as an "Alternate" Name; and, some "Links" in the "Research Links".

By my reckoning, this is not really what is required; because, "Appleby-in-Westmorland" appears to be an actual Place Name, even in use today; as, per the references in my original post.

I could be wrong; and, I usually am.

And, I expect that I will get a great deal of responses for this response of mine.

But, please reconsider the Place Name of "Appleby-in-Westmorland" as a valid "Standardised" Place Name.

Just my thoughts for your consideration.

One, again, I am so sorry to be such an irritating nuisance.

    'Thank You' in advance.

      'Yes', I all good now.

And, things can be, a bit slower; and, certainly, more 'laid-back' here, "Down Under".

  • In our database for FamilySearch Places, there are 3 representations for this place. From 1226-1801, the name of the place is Appleby, Westmorland, England. The next representation from 1801-1974 the place is named Appleby, Westmorland, England, United Kingdom. The 3rd is from 1974 to the present, and its name is Appleby-in-Westmorland, Cumbria, England, United Kingdom. I am dismayed to say that FamilyTree's Standardized place names don't always match the place names we have in our database. Perhaps you could take this problem to the people who work on FamilyTree.
