Stupid site

I do not know who thought this site was a good idea, it is not. It is the most ridiculous site I have had to use. Your other site was much better then this one. It had to be a man that dreamt up this site as it is literally stupid. Never works correctly.

  • I am suppose to reply to my own question? It just proves how stupid your site is. There is no way for me to get back to the search part of this site, so I guess I will quit using it.

  • Thank you, Margit, for your feedback. We really do want to make the site the best it can be. Perhaps if you could give us some specifics about the things you don't like, or that were better in the pilot site, we could make some changes that will improve things for you?

    Ms. Bakke,

As I read your post, I feel that you are upset with this site and prefer to use the "other site".

Perhaps a good starting point would be to explain in more detail what you like about the other site and what you do not like about this site.

  • Thank you for replying. When I choose exact, I expect exact, so do not throw in a bunch of other names that are not exact. If I wanted soundex, I would choose it. This site is just not up to the standards of your other site. I am a member of DIS-norge (Norwegian Genealogical Society in Norway) and help several each day when I am able on their message boards, however, this site is just not as good as your pilot site. The interface on the other site was better then this site. Easier to use and to assess the information returned.

  • Thanks for taking the time to help us make the site better. With respect to "exact" not returning exact results, do you have an example search that did not return the results you expected? That would be really helpful.

Also, could you go into a little more detail about what made the pilot site easier to use? We have heard similar things from some of our other users, but we are still trying to determine the best way to improve things. The more specific you can be, the better we can know where the real problems are.
    • On several occasions I have left remarks on the feedback forum or wherever the comments go to. Plain and simple I do not like this format and I do not appreciate someone adding names to my search just because maybe they sound like the name. Bergmann is Bergmann, not Berg or Bergh or any other spelling. Margit is Margit, it is not Margrette, Margaret or any other spelling then Margit. Jacob spelled Jacob and exact chosen should only be Jacob on return, not Jakob.

  • In the new system, the default is to allow "close matches". Have you checked the "exact" checkboxes in "advanced search"? When I tried searching for "Margit Bergman" in this way, it showed only exact matches (see attached image).

  • Yes I am fully aware of each and every way to search. And yes I have clicked on the exact and still get the thing that says "well these exactly don't fit but" I don't remember all it states.
I am back using the pilot site which is the best of all your sites. I have no idea what I will do when you take that offline.

  • I'm afraid I can't reproduce your problem. If you could give me the exact search terms that produce the unexpected results, that would be very helpful.

  • When searching for LARS (Not exact) Bergmann (Exact)
I do not want to see Ella or Mary or Anna or Caroline orHerbert pop up when searching for the above. I expect to see Bergmann (Exact) and various forms of Lars, Louis, Louie, Lewis, Lewie etc. only.

Tips: The following results don't strongly match what you searched for, but may be of interest.

    Ella L. Bergmann

  • In this case, the results you object to are matching with the middle initial "L". The system returns these because it is possible the the "L" stands for "Lars". Perhaps these results seem especially wrong because "Lars" is a male name, and most of the results seem to be female. If we had a way to specify the gender, that might help you filter some of these. If there were any matches on any of the various forms of Lars, they would be ranked higher than any match on an initial (in this case, the letter "L"). I suppose, to completely satisfy you, we would need a setting between the two we have today (exact, inexact) that allows you to return "close" matches, but not matches on initials.

  • Just keep the pilot site. I do not need to see anything other then what I am looking for and the pilot site does a much better job and you can see everything immediately and assess the situation a whole lot easier. It gives you better options on the top and they are easy to change. The beta site is no good as far as I am concerned and useless to me as is.

Unfortunately, it is very unlikely that we will keep the pilot site, long term. It is very expensive to have more than 1 site, and the current plan is that the beta site will become the official site and that, eventually, the pilot site will be turned off.

Given this, the best we can do is to try to improve the beta site as much and as quickly as possible. We would like to incorporate into the beta site all of the best parts of the pilot site. In order to do that, we need to understand specifically what is it about the pilot site that makes it so that you can "see everything immediately and assess the situation a whole lot easier." Also, what are the "better options on the top" that are "easy to change"?

I'm sorry to ask you to get this specific. It's just so helpful when real users like you take the time to explain these things to us.

  • I’m confident
The whole set up of the site. It will not let me copy and paste to put on here so that you can see it. You should be familiar with it if you work there. It is just much much simpler. Not everyone is a computer wizard and this site is clearly easier to use and to understand. You have a lot of people out there well over the age of 60 who use your site and are not computer savvy. I help a lot of them and believe me they have a very tough time understanding. On the pilot site, you can choose on the top to use various variables. See the picture.
