System creating Duplicate names from OLD information

The system is creating duplicates of ancestors on the tree. It appears that all the information is OLD (perhaps it was hidden). It is necessary to merge these names; and every person being merged shows the date of 28 APR 2017 as a date that I changed the information. This is an error as no changes were made. Is anyone else having this weird issue?

  • For anyone from FamilySearch (and the rest of us) to see what is going on, you need to post a few of the IDs of the poeple where you see this happening.

  • I am just a patron to the "Family Tree" and the following are just my thoughts after reading your above "Feedback."

If you do any merging of people in the "Family Tree" it will show you as the person who did the merging and to-days date.

The FamilySearch "Family Tree" is a one person, one would, "Family Tree" for all of humanity.

The system is not creating duplicates. Only living people can create duplicates in the "Family Tree," and more than likely they were created by distant family members years ago, and you are probably just finding these duplicates to-day.

You have done correct by merging these duplicates, in that the FamilySearch "Family Tree" is ONE BIG tree.

  • Thank you for your thoughts. The information added to Family Tree has been only added by myself. The information that is appearing are individuals that were "hidden" (old information) by FamilySearch.

  • "Hidden" or just hard to find? Again, an example would really help to explain your concern and would let people analyze what is going on.

  • The "duplicates" were "hidden." I created a case early last year and these same names that were "hidden" are showing, creating the duplicates. I have created another case to support--including PIDS, etc. I'm hopeful that once this bug is fixed, that all will revert to as it was.

  • Duplicates, or "hidden" and old information are just that, information put into the "Family Tree," probably years ago by other patrons to the "Family Tree." These duplicates can appear as though they are "hidden" in that sometimes they are very hard to find.

For the engineers to understand your case, you will need to do as Gordon Collett suggest, and that is to show FamilySearch a person that you have entered into the "Family Tree," and then show FamilySearch another person where supposedly the system has created a duplicate. Note that if this is indeed happening and the system is creating duplicates, then they would have a creation date after your initial entry of the person into the "Family Tree." All duplicates of the the people you enter into the "Family Tree," have been created years ago by other patrons to the "Family Tree," and would have a creation date prior to your adding of that person into the "Family Tree."

  • Like Gordon Collett said, we need the PIDs in order to see those altered families and help with how to undo the mistakes.

I've been through this many times, reverting to correct information and send polite but firm messages to those who made the errors, reminding them to heed the sources.

Plus the mistakes carried over from Ancestry have to be cleaned up, too many red-flagged entries.
