Way the old fashion GEDCOM way of adding data, with the new genealogical way of collaborating & wickapedia style "Family Tree?"

From the start or get-go FamilySearch has asked patrons to except a new way of doing genealogy, which is to collaborate with a wickapedia, or open edit style database called the "Family Tree." They want us to do a new way of doing genealogy, but have kept the old fashion GEDCOM way of entering data, or ancestors, into the "Family Tree."

If the old fashion GEDCOM way of adding data, (Ancestors), to the "Family Tree" were to disappear, WHAT WOULD HAPPEN?

  • I find the current approach makes it easier (for me) to find duplicate records and identify which need to be merged into a single person. That makes more sense to me than having every relative having a tree where the same relatives show up on each tree. Yikes.
I used GEDCOM for years. I currently use FamilySearch and Ancestry. I certainly gain information from all sources but my favorite way to save data is on FamilySearch with my preference for saving pictures, documents, etc. being Ancestry.
Now if all those DNA analyzers could only pool their information.

    Hi Don,

I think there would be some who would complain. We've seen it in the past in this forum, but most of the complaints were that the process was too cumbersome. The desire was a upload, let it merge and add on its own, and forget it.

FamilySearch really has two choices --

    1) - Abandon the current compare system and let patrons know that there are ways to upload a GEDCOM that accurately identify existing records and then allow the person to selectively add data from the GEDCOM to the record.

    2) - Fix the broken compare function so that it accurately finds existing records in the tree. Of course, that also means that at least three systems need rework: the find search routine, the possible duplicates routine, and the source-linker routines. All of them can use some serious upgrades, all of which have been covered in other threads.

Actually --- they have and are using a third choice:

    3) ignore the complaints and allow duplicates to continue to be created without concern for how the patrons feel.
