We Need A Backup To What Is In The Library Catalog Today-Make A CD

Please make a CD of the current Library Catalog as it existes to day so Family History Centers can have a reliable source to show patrons. What I see in the beta catalog is not reliable, accurate or complete. yes,it wouldn't have newly added items but we could be sure up to the date of the CD. This is a concern I see coming. Another case of fixing something that wasn't broken.

  • It would be helpful if you could describe to us what is not accurate, reliable or complete in the beta catalog. We are very interested in resolving any issues but need a little more detail.

Hmmmm, the many things folks have been pointing out for starters. #1 the missing films for Orphan's Court Records for New Castle Delaware that I just described. Many years ago there was a CD of the catalog at that point in time. Yes,it is outdated quickly but at least it had the correct info up to that date. It was like a benchmark that was a sure thing. At this point I don't feel beta catalog is a sure thing. We need "topics" predominantly displayed, we need "item #s" prominently displayed, we need "view related places" back in place, we need to feel all films are listed and not missing as the Orphan Court records -- in other words we need the catalog as it exists currently in familysearch.org.

  • When I go to the Orphans' Court records for New Castle County, Delaware, 1742-1853 I see all the film numbers. The items numbers, when present, are also displayed along side an entry's film numbers Can you suggest ways that we could display these to better meet your needs?

We are working on a "gazetteer" and view related places functionality for a future release.

By "Topics" do you mean "Subjects?
    • Robert,
With some sort of viewing related places the new catalog would be great. It takes awhile to get used to the new arrangement, but it gets easier as I continue to test it. The Library catalog has long been the most reliable, and most used thing on familysearch.org so it is the one I was most concerned about when I first saw it. With the things that have been added and corrected lately it is going to be just fine. Yes, Topics are Subjects or perhaps Titles.

I swore I was not going to spend another minute telling you that there are serious problems and errors in fsbeta.familysearch! It seems to be a lesson in futility and so needless and a waste of my time, "But I must tell you one more time you are on the brink of destroying the best thing going for genealogy so far." When the regular familysearch.org was down for maintenance today I went to beta to find the film # I needed. It is a simple thing, an Orphan's Court Record that I am already familiar with from the old catalog, I just needed the # of the next film in the sequence to order.

In beta, in "Place Search" I put Delaware, USA. On the left in the "new" type of topics I selected court records. A logical choice, right? There are NO Orphan Court titles listed! What? I know they are in the Library as I have been using them lately. Now we not only don't like the new arrangement of Catalog entries, we also cannot have any confidence that the new catalog is accurate and complete. This is devastating to genealogists as the Catalog was the one thing we could trust.

The old familysearch.org came back up and I went to the "Place Search" and quickly got the film # I was seeking.

Back to beta and in "Film Search" entered 6547 and lo and behold there is the Orphan's Court Record film I wanted to find in the first place ---- but not when I search the "Place Search" "Delaware, USA"

You have a serious problem and it is undermining all of the beautiful design you have in mind for familysearch.org. Now I really do have to give up and bow out of this exercise.

This is the title of the film I was looking for: Orphans' Court records for New Castle County, Delaware, 1742-1853; index to Orphans court records,1742-1868

Go to Place: Delaware, USA. Then select Court Records, Do you see it listed anywhere?
