What happened to Census images?

Thank you for putting genealogical information on the internet with no access charge. Your Family Search Pilot site is quite useful although somewhat clunky due to the use of Flash. Requests for images for the 1850 and 1870 Federal Censuses on the Pilot site now just get a message "This image is no longer availble on Record Search. You might be able to see the image at fsbeta.familysearch.org." The image of course is NOT available on fsbeta. Allow me to point out that there is much essential information available in the actual Census images that is not in the indices or summaries that you do offer on fsbeta. Particularily for Hispanic areas of New Mexico, your indexers do only a fair job with spelling and your indices have no information at all about extended families listed in adjoining entries--family numbers often were arbitrarily assigned by enumerators. Will actual Census images again be made available?

The project we anticipate will take several more weeks. Collections are being loaded one at a time and then images connected to the database. Please continue to check our web site over the next few weeks, chances are that the records you are seeking will then be available.

Why are some 1850 census images (Orange County NC) available yet 1850 Richmond NC isn't. Why is there a difference and why is one census different in it's importance?

I'm sure you have reasons for removing the images from Pilot Family Search. I'm just not sure they're good ones! Put the original images back so we (researchers) can look at them, not just a transcription (maybe correct, maybe not) taken completely out of the context of family and community!
If your plans are to eventually connect the images back in, it should have been done BEFORE disconnecting them from Pilot.

I am also frustrated. It was so much easier to connect family members before the census was removed. The reply I got back was that I could go to the family history library in my area. The time I have to do research is from 5am to 9am. What center is open then. As an indexer too, I know how seeing the actual census is very helpful. Please put back the census until the 'new program' is ready. Thanks

Add me to the long list of frustrated people There were a lot of European records that were unindexed, available only for browsing. These kinds of records are not available anywhere else online, only by ordering the microfilms and waiting weeks for them to arrive, only to find that the record you want is on a different film. These images have been removed from Pilot, and not moved over to beta. Why scan them in the first place if you're just going to remove them?

    Hello gms,

As far as the image availabilty, location and policies I can not answer to those. I myself have some issues with Family Search in these areas and it is only for FS to address.

However, as an active indexer, I have found every record from many different collections were handwritten. This can be very confusing for some as names were entered based on how it sounds-like-it-should-be-spelled rather than the actual spelling. And the legibility of the record is at times quite atrocious. While I am no slouch at making inferences to intent of the data, for the sake of accuracy when I am overy challenegd, I will leave it to an arbitrator at times as they have much more experience than I do with these old handwritten records.

I still am unaware if FS has a vehicle for actual family members to make corrections to record errata. Maybe Jean Robbins can help with that.

Premier membership means you have to be a Mormon and you get nothing more than the average user. This is a point system so they basically treat you like an infant and you have to earn points to have access. The site is so messed up that at this point it's not worth donating records as they can't work the glitches out and no one benefits from your contibution as they don't make the images available.

As I understand it, premier membership has nothing to do with being or not being a Mormon, but being an indexer will to take on difficult records or will consistently index records.

What is a FamilySearch Premier membership? Premier membership gives you access to view information in record collections on FamilySearch.org that might otherwise be restricted or might cost to view.
Why does FamilySearch have Premier membership? Since we do not own all of the collections we publish, and some record owners require compensation to maintain their collection, this method enables more collections to be available for research. FamilySearch invests in private archives by preserving records and making these collections searchable. FamilySearch and the archives have agreed by contract to allow access to everyone that assists them in this process. Without Premier membership, you can usually search the indexes of these restricted collections; however, the images may not be freely available.
Are the benefits of Premier membership available to everyone? Yes, they are available to everyone through any of the following methods: Index records and earn 900 points within a calendar quarter. Use any family history center located around the world to access FamilySearch. Belong to a sponsoring organization, such as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or another company or society that sponsors FamilySearch. Additional methods of contributing to FamilySearch may also qualify you for Premier membership.

The problem we have with premier accounts is that the scripting is not yet complete. Some collections, such as Ohio Deaths, can be accessed by simply logging in, whether or not you are a member of the church. That is the only level of authentication that has written so far...so in effect...a premier membership only exists in theory at the moment.

Taking away these images are really putting a tole on us researchers. The images are a wealth of information, and removing them from the site makes our searches more dissicult. The death certificates for example, were very helpful. For the most part it gave the full names of the parents; and solved several mysteries when it came to finding our female ancestors maiden names. I am very disappointed in your decision to start a project and then make it totally unavailable to us, only to lead us to the beta site which is not ready! Not only that, the images are not totally available and the transcripts are not always correct either. If someone transcribing a record cannot read it correctly, they enter in what they THINK it is, and it is really a pain in the butt! I am NOT happy with your decisions to do the sites half-way then drop it. Go back to the way it was and left us see the death certificates! THIS IS FRUSTRATING !!!!!!!!

First, how about having the latest responses at the top like other sites that allow feedback. That way we don't have to page through so many posts to get to the latest.

This is frustrating........I love the pilot and make use of it regularly. However, it does have limitations but at least I can put in names, dates and places and come out with something close to what I am looking for. That doesn't happen here with any regularity. I put in a name, dates and places and come up with everything all over the globe. Sometimes the last names are the same and some have no similarity at all!!!!! If I put in the names of the parents or spouse then I get no returns because I have asked for too much even though I know it is there because I found it on this site. Sometimes I think I have gotten lucky only to find that the record shows to be on another site. Frequently this is Footnote and they charge to access these records! I hate to pay for something that is supposed to be free. I tried them once and just threw my money away for all the good it did me. I got nothing useable from them.

Please!!!!!!!! Put some search guides on the site that work and don't give me people in Europe when I ask for someone in Texas and don't list the people with last names only which means I have to open each file usually to find that the name actully on the record is not even in my tree.

Also it would be nice if there was some way to add a postit to the document if there are errors on it. It would make it so much easier for other searchers to see that it is actually the person they are looking for and either the transcriber made an error (very frequent) or the person filling out the document made the error (this also happens).

Not only that but I have gotten a message a couple off times telling me that the image is available on FootNote! Do they not know that you have to subscribe to FootNote to get these documents? I had a subscription to FootNote and cancelled it because my searches failed to find anything useable in my genealogy.

There is another possible way to get census images at no cost. It would depend on whether your local library subscribes to HeritageQuest or not and whether you have a library card. Many libraries subscribe to HeritageQuest and many of the libraries offer that as an online site that can be accessed by your home computer. Many libraries also have Ancestry available but only when you are physically at the library but my library makes HeritageQuest available from a home computer. It would pay to check that out. It is too bad that the late lamented Familysearch record site is being stripped of its useful images in favor of a very user unfriendly web site using difficult and unworkable search options. My other complaint concerns the incessant necessity to sign in repeatedly. All my other genealogy websites make use of "cookies" to keep users from having to sign in repeatedly. It is mind boggling that this site does not.
    • The whole situation on this website is mind-boggling. I was not having any trouble with images from Texas until late last Friday. Since then, NOTHING is available.

What a shame. I have been using the Pilot search site since it first came up and found it to be absolutely invaluable. I recommended it to many, many people. No more.

I notice the folks from LDS are no longer responding to any of our concerns. I guess they have gotten tired of reading the same complaints for months. I also guess it hasn't occurred to them that if there are multiple complaints about the same thing, then there is a major problem.

Hello, out there?!? I sure hope LDS is not paying a programmer to mess up this site. If so, you're really being ripped off!

Sad, sad situation. I guess I can delete this website from my "best" list of genealogy resources.

All this in the guise of helping people with their research! Not very organised I would say. It would make sense to wait until the Beta site was fully operational and transfer the information there. Oh my! Bet they never thought of that. Plus I'll bet the two sites don't even speak the same language so you can't just unplug Pilot and plug it into Beta. Duh! Job security for sure. Just another case of the big guys and the little guys.

We users were promised by people working for this web site that the pilot site would not be dismantled until the beta site was as good or better than the late lamented pilot site. As we users can see, that promise is not being kept. There is a notation on the pilot site that it will soon be done away with in favor of this obviously flawed web site. Exact search does not work at all with death certificates. I have tried both ways, looking at a death certificate that was obtained from the pilot site and typing in the information contained there. Exact search yields nothing at all. Only using the minimalist approach, typing in the bare minimum of information will yield results. A couple of weeks ago I received a reply when I posted that message and was asked to provide data in support of that. I supplied the requested data and have since heard not one word explaining the flaws in this system.

  • I have been frustrated along with everyone else but I will say that patience is not only a virtue but can allow those who are trying to work out the bugs and the workload to have a little breathing space. I remember when PAF first came out and then people were clamoring for everything to come online and be shared. I know that from the Church side of things they had major concerns about privacy and hacking. They proceeded with caution. We are finally at that point but I believe caution is still warranted.

    • Perhaps I have just very fortunate in my searches. Maybe I have simply limited most of my searches in areas where I have checked to see that indexing has already had significant impact. I did find the bridge for my Gr-gr-gr-gr father's birthplace to a specific location in Ireland from his daughter's death certificate in Ohio! That alone is worth all the effort I go to in indexing. Prior to this all the family had dug up was that he was from Dublin or Cork- both were erroneous! I have also spent the last two days working on ancillary lines and very grateful to find all the marriage, death and birth records. Whenever I log in to do indexing, I look for projects which might help either my own ancestors or ones that test my skills so I can improve them for the future. I also try to recruit others to help. What a great family service project! And it teaches children to read handwriting which is not something taught in school anymore. A dying skill if we do not share it with the youth of today.
