I’m wondering

What is relationship with FindMYPast?

When searching for an ancestor, I often get a message where the image should be that reads: "An image for this record may be available at: www.findmypast.com. Fees may apply.

If I click on View Image, I am taken to the home page of FindMyPast. I have to re-enter the same data again and then I get an advertisement to sign up for a subscription.

It seems like you are just providing advertising for FindMyPast. Is there something I am missing? Will these images eventually be available free of charge on FamilySearch?

  • Jim,

As part of the mission to make as much of the world's data as possible available for free FamilySearch teams negotiate records access with partner data holders. These licenses take many forms. Some of these take the form of a shared effort at indexing, cross licensing of images and indexes, free image access for FS patrons at the 3rd party site, or index only access.

We recognize the vital importance of the record image. We had to ask the question "If we can't display the image, will the users still find value in seeing the index and knowing that an image is available and it's location?" We determined that there is value in making the index searchable if that is all that is possible.

Two things are underway that will make this feature more understandable.
    1) We are working with the 3rd parties to insure that the indexed fields are sufficient to actually make a genealogical decision.
    2) Additional technologies are being added that will allow a qualified FamilySearch patron to access the image for no charge at the the 3rd party site where the licenses allow this.

  • Ahh, A great idea.

I was just informed this morning that the backend systems we will need to deliver this information attached to each result on the Search Results page will be ready for us to begin working with in a week. We will be informing the user on whether a record has wide open access, has restrictions, or is at a third party site in early 2011.

We should all vote for that idea. It's already been posted. http://getsatisfaction.com/familysear...
