I’m frustrated

Missing film numbers and notes

Many title records in the beta catalog do not include film numbers. These titles may contain multiple films, but the film notes/film numbers are not carrying over. This makes the records useless, as patrons are unable to locate films.

  • I'm not sure which collections you are referring to, but some of the collections have been obtained digitally and were never on microfilm. New York, Kings County Estates is one example.

  • Cynthia, I'm a cataloger in the department, so I am well aware of the fact that there are digital collections.

Here is the url for one example: http://fsbeta.familysearch.org/s/cata...

The catalog record clearly states that there are 2 films for this locality, and the old catalog does list both films with film notes. However, the beta catalog only lists 1 film note. Some catalog records do not show any film notes at all in beta; however, in the old catalog, the film notes are definitely there. If beta is not going to have all the information, how are the patrons supposed to find the films?

Also, I know I've reported this elsewhere, but the beta catalog is missing item numbers in all of the film notes; these are also essential in assisting patrons with research.

  • I’m sad
It looks like there are multiple items for this film number. Where are the item numbers?

  • To follow Catherijne's posting, I looked up the record in the old catalogue. I hope I've got the right one, as I don't read Russian

The URl's for the record and film notes were
    http://www.familysearch.org/eng/libra...% &columns=*,0,0 and

    http://www.familysearch.org/eng/libra...+

The film notes clearly shows three different films, while only one is shown in the beta catalogue(Also no item numbers were shown, but we are told this is being addressed). This is a copy of the film notes:
Title Метрические книги : Преображенская церковь, 1847-1859
Authors Православная церковь. Пятевщина (Минск) (Main Author)

    Note Location
    Film
    Ф. 136, о. 13, д. 393 Рождения, бракосочетания, смерти 1847 VAULT INTL Film 2101977 Item 1
    Ф. 136, о. 13, д. 393а Рождения, бракосочетания, смерти 1858 VAULT INTL Film 2101978 Item 1
    Ф. 136, о. 13, д. 393б Рождения, бракосочетания, смерти 1859
FHL INTL Film 2101979 Item 1

I note the two missing films say VAULT INTL film. while the one that does appear says FHL INTL film

The above is an issue that needs to be addressed.

While attempting to clarify in the beta catalogue if there were other records I tried a location search for Petevshchina, Minsk, Belarus and nothing came up. It wasn't until I searched the entire beta catalogue for this same location that a record came up. I can't see the logic in that.

I also found the library search not "user friendly" but will wtite separately on that, if no one else has.

    Cheers
    Maureen

  • I’m concerned
Please put back the film Item numbers. Some films have more than 30 items. It is hard enough to find what you are looking for when you know the item number. Without it, finding a 2 or 3 page manuscript is virtually impossible.

  • I’m Disappointed
Film search for 848281 in the “Pre beta” Library Catalog shows this
Item 1 Harrison Co. marriage records, 1784-1895
Item 2 Jefferson Co., marriages, 1802-1899
Item 3 Kanawha Co. marriages, 1792-1869
Items 4-5 Marion Co. marriage records, 1842-1865
Note: the item #’s show where in that film you will find each county of interest
Film search for 848281 in the Beta Catalog shows this
    Marion Co. marriage records, 1842-1865
    Harrison Co. marriage records, 1784-1895
    Jefferson Co., marriages, 1802-1899
    Kanawha Co. marriages, 1792-1869
Note: No item #’s so no way of knowing where in that film you will find the county of interest

We need the item #'s as they appear in the "Pre beta" catalog. Practice looking at microfilms will show the value of item #'s.

the digitized films sometimes do not have film numbers, where are the old catalog film numbers? sometimes you get a film and there are only 81 images and most of the film is missing years? i'm so lost at what i had seen years ago and now i am seeing films i already saw because there are no film numbers.
