I’m not happy

Why must I have a premier membership?

Why is it saying I must be a premier member to see the images with the Ohio death records? Earlier today, when I searched, I had to register and sign in with a free account. NOW, it is saying that I must have a premier membership to view them? Your policy has changed in less than two hours?? I simply don't understand why a wonderful site is turning into like all of the other ancestry sites, charging for access to records that they had available free at one time.

  • Hi Katie,

FamilySearch doesn't charge for anything on the site. There is no pay system implemented. There are some collections where the licenses we have with record owners either require a user to login or to contribute back to the community in order to see the collection images.

The premiere membership is attainable by donating time to indexing. It allows us to display additional collection images to those who contribute time and skills to the community, currently through indexing.

There is one additional type of record you may see. In an effort to make as much data available for free, we have arranged with some record owners to make the record data on their collections searchable and visible for free. If users wish to see the record image we need to link users to the owner's website where the images will be visible, sometimes with a fee. FamilySearch doesn't receive any money associated with these agreements.

There are still a number of bugs throughout the system that we are working out as quickly as possible. I suspect you have hit one of them with the changing messages you are getting.

  • I’m looking forward to a better site.
It seems that a lot of the images aren't working right now. I've even gotten a blank with no message. The help section said to notify FS if a Premier Membership was required for anything, so here you are. I like the idea of everything under one roof, so I hope all this will be straightened out soon.

  • So is premier membership limited to those who have contributed a certain level to family search indexing? If this is so than why does the explanation also say that membership in a sponsoring organization works as well? I am ok with the contribution rule, but it would be nice if things are consistent.
