I’m disappointed

Would love to know the reasons for your recent changes- I don't find them helpful

I will start with a compliment! I like how you have a number next to possible duplicates, That is helpful. The timeline may prove to be helpful after I investigate it furthur. The sections being all white with no color separating them is disturbing and hard to distinguish or read. The print size being smaller on the left side of the page is very difficult to see; especially since the majority of us working are older. I liked the individual record hints listed so I could click on ONE and have it open another window because I could compare what I already had to the record hint. Now you have to click on record hints and right click on the one you want to open it in another window and THEN choose review. It was so much simpler the way you had it when it automatically opened another window for the source so you could compare it with the person page. Not being able to open an attached source and see the person page at the same time is really unacceptable! I liked the ability to change the order of the list on the right hand side. It is disappointing that you don't have that now. I set mine up so the possible duplicates was on top and reminded me of the importance to check that often. Having to scroll down to see it is not helpful. I appreciate you trying to improve the site but do not see the reason or helpfulness of many of your changes. I would love to hear the reasons for the changes!

I could not agree more. There are a couple of good things included in this update, but those are far out-numbered by the negative.
    1) There is a ridiculous amount of blank space (white & grey) on a 'person' page - why, then, must the print on the left side of the screen be so small and pale. The large amount of blank, white space on the left side of the page makes it difficult for those who have poor eyesight.
    2) Family section - The ability to see which ancestor's page you are currently viewing, noted by that name being in bold, is gone! You have to scroll to the top of the page to see just who you are working on.
    3) Can no longer view ALL the information about an ancestor on that person's Details. The previous ability to click on, for example, Sources, and have the screen automatically scroll down to that section of the page was nice. But separating the sources completely from the Details is user-unfriendly. For people with slow internet, it is cumbersome to switch back and forth between images/screens
    4) The ability to 'right click' on links to open them in a new tab or new window has almost totally been destroyed. I have found only two situations that accept 'right click'.
    5) Previously, the links, View Tree, Watch, & View My Relationship were right under the birth, death, & ID# - now they are on the opposite side of the screen - why? It is not logical or helpful to have the eyes darting from one side of the screen to the other. The original 3 lines at the top-left of the person page were not crowded or hard to see.
    6) Record Hints - it is nice that the number of hints appears to the right of the link, but not being able to see the first 3 hints openly displayed, is not helpful. If you click to 'Show Details', the hints are not opened in a new tab, but replace the ancestor's page so that that person's details are now hidden. It is the same with Sources.
    7) As mentioned already, the missing 'gear' which allowed re-arrangement of the sections on the right side of the page is a step backwards - it was a great addition when implemented. Gone is the ability to personalize the screen to make it more useful to individuals.
    8) 'Ordering' sources is awkward, now.
    9) Searching for a new ID# - the format is inconsistent - sometimes you can find another person by using all lower case and no dash - sometimes you have to put in a dash - sometimes you have to use all caps and a dash.

If I had to narrow my complaints down to one, I would say it is the fact that we can no longer see all the 'sections' concerning an ancestor on one page. Please restore the 'Details' page & bring back the ability to click on a link (Sources for example) at the top of the page which automatically scrolls the page to the Sources section or whatever link is clicked.

Its not that hard to figure out. The changes NEEDED TO BE MADE TO STOP ROOKIE GENEALOGISTS THAT DONT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING. Why do you think there is so many annoying pop up windows? They are trying to discourage edits and promote better corrections VIA PROOFS THAT NOBODY USES, BECAUSE THEY WANT TO USE GRANDMA JONES PASS ME DOWNS AND INTERNET HOOBIDIE DOOBIE SOCIAL PEDIGREES! This had to stop at some point, people are fed up with altered changes to there ancestors by peoples data from out of nowhere land. This is logical. The only thing they did wrong here is that they messed up with some of the layout by not making things as clear as they once were, things that used to be there, like the history button below vitals, and making fonts better or coloring better to read. Otherwise there is nothing that bad. What really needs to be done is the church needs to put in the help file that findagrave and social pedigree sources from ancestry.com ARE NOT ROOF SOURCES. We also need to stop letting people add more dumb duplicate gedcoms!

  • As far as I understand it based on previous comments from the programmers, the reason for this update was that they needed to reduce server loads. The traffic to the tree is increasingly rapidly, and they needed to have a way to make it so that the pages had less information so that when they are opened, it will take up less server space. So the person pages are now split into multiple pages because this frees up their servers. Then they can make the whole site load more quickly and efficiently for all and be able to keep up with the demand. It was actually necessary to make a change in the way things are so that they are able to keep the website going. So in my mind, this change is well worth it for the end result.
    • If this is true, I am not seeing how adding the new Map and Timeline functions (as cool as they are) helps improve speed. I would much rather have a slower website with the source notes at the bottom of the person's page than maps, timeline, or a faster website. For people who spend lots of time evaluating the evidence, it's not faster. It's significantly slower.

Good luck with trying to get any responsive answers to your specific notes. All I'm seeing is generalities like we are sorry you're frustrated, change is hard, get used to it, everybody else loves it, we don't have time to answer hard questions about basic functionality and design of the user interface--we are too focused on bug reports. And people who don't like it are hyperventilating drama kings/queens.

  • I was out of town and away when the change happened. I was very upset when nothing worked. After 48 hours of extreme frustration I was able to get some work done today. Some of the glitches have been corrected. Although I only went to the family I was working on and was almost finished with that part. Of course I concentrate on birth, marriage, military, death, burial, and census records. I'm not involved with Temple work and its requirements. So I have no idea on any glitches for that type of research.
Anyway I posted what I found Pros & Cons about what I was able to see in today's work I was able to achieve.
    • Joe Martel has requested that each issue be placed in its own discussion thread. I don't see a problem with a pros and cons posting, as the manager of the team that developed the new user interface can see what is liked and not like in one posting.

I am not associated with FamilySearch or its management, but am just another patron.
