FedEx claims I'm not at home and can't deliver, but I'm home!

This is a problem that has happened to me and my girlfriend now several times (3 or 4). We will have ordered something online that's shipped FedEx ground, and we'll get an email that there was a "delivery exception," meaning the package couldn't get delivered, and the explanation will be something along the lines of, "Customer not at location." Problem is, one or both of us often work from home, so we know that we were home at the time it supposedly couldn't be delivered. Sometimes there is a FedEx door hanger explaning, sometimes not, but in either case, our buzzer works fine and not only that, our super lives in the building and is always around during the day for deliveries. So something doesn't add up. I double-checked with a shipper just to make sure he had the address right, which he did, and he chalked it up to "lazy FedEx delivery person." I called FedEx's consumer help line and they said that they would check with the delivery hub, but I remain dubious that anything will change.

This has happened to me twice now within the last 6 months. I order something, track it online, and on the day it goes "out for delivery" I make sure to listen for the doorbell (as I often work from home). At the end of the day there's no package, no note on my door, and the cryptic "delivery exception". FedEx customer service suggested that maybe the note "fell off the door"... yeah right. One package was supposed to be a "guaranteed delivery by Christmas", so of course I showed up for Christmas with no gift. Gee thanks FedEx.

They totally lied to us by saying we are not at home when my husband and I both came home early from work on different days to receive the package...no knock, no phone call, no tag at the front door. Because of this we have completely stopped using FedEx and are using UPS. Our UPS driver rocks and calls us both to let us know he is dropping off a package or to see if either of us are home (whether the package is going to my husband or me, he calls us both). Try UPS from now on.

don't use ups they don't let there employes have unions which results in worse working conditions for workers, and although fedex has problems they do let there workers unionize

to mediathoughts. Fedex USED to be good but it was the UNIONS that RUINED them. Unions USED to be a good thing but now the pendulum has gone the other way and it's basically a money grabbing racket to keep bad employees from getting fired. No thanks!

The one union I worked for is absolute shit, so I feel you there, Ted. Chief rep had the gall to act like a prosecutor cross-examining me for assault when I was termed (aka walked, pinked) for throwing a small piece of meat (first offense. generally a 3-step offense, iirc) I miss some of the people, and the paycheck, but otherwise they can blow me.

Same thing happened to me today. I work from home and my office faces the front window. My address isn't in Google maps so I don't think they even tried. It's a perishable item that cannot be delivered three days from now. Even worse, the contracted Fed Ex office is closed and doesn't reopen until Tuesday. Today is Saturday.

same thing happens with FedEx to me too, I was 4 feet from the door, in a chair waiting for FedEx at the time they claim to have "tried to deliver", seriously, they Lie like flying carpets, I live just 2 miles from the FedEx facility & they wont let me pick it up, I beginning to really loath FedEx!

This happened to me over the holidays with the temp drivers. I work from my home and walked by the front door to see a "sticky" on the window about attempted delivery. I also have five dogs. If the doorbell had rung or there was a knock, I would have known. I finally put a sign up saying I AM HOME. RING THE DOORBELL AND WAIT FOR ME TO GET TO THE DOOR. Needless to say, the next two times the temp delivered packages, the doorbell rung and the dogs barked their heads off. When my regular driver came back after the holidays, I told him the story and got quite the eye roll - like this isn't he first time he heard the same story.

I also have a 8.5 x 11 sign on my garage door window stating PLEASE LEAVE ALL PACKAGES AT THE FRONT DOOR. Guess how many drivers follow that one?

I second Tracy's recommendation to put a note on the door to make sure the driver rings the doorbell or knocks on the door.

I have had several problems like this over the years with Fedex and UPS. It seems like the drivers would rather you not be home so they can just leave their 'sticky' and be on the the next house. It's a really poor way of doing things and at times, it forced me to drive into the city to the warehouse to pick up my shipments.

Maybe if these shipping companies based driver performance on how many items are actually delivered to the customer instead of just focusing on speed of the routes, we would actually get our items quicker!

next time you have to drive into town to get your package, bring a bill for services rendered and MAKE THEM PAY for your time and mileage.

I also recommend UPS instead of FedEx. I get perhaps 10 UPS deliveries per month, and have never had any issues, while the 1 or 2 FedEx deliveries I get per month are a constant headache.

My particular FedEx problem is that they refuse to knock on the door if signature is not required. They either leave the package outside or leave a delivery exception notice, without even knocking on the door.

I tried to complain to customer service, but I was told by a FedEx employee that whether to knock on the door or just leave the package outside is "left to the driver's discretion if a signature is not required."

Early this morning I tracked a FedEx shipment which was shown as "out for delivery." When there was no delivery by 1 pm, I checked again to find that the status was "exception - no attempt made; rescheduled." While delivery tomorrow is still well within the committment, it's a nuisance to hang around in case a signature is required when delivery has been canceled. Apparently FedEx doesn't want cheap shipments to arrive too quickly, so as to avoid eroding the price structure for faster delivery. Meanwhile UPS is eating FedEx's lunch...

I ordered a $2,500 Dell computer and HD monitor which was suppposed to be delivered on a Friday (according to FedEx's tracking site). I stayed home from work Friday only to find upon checking again that it was reschduled for Saturday. So my husband and I got up early and stayed home and within hearing of the front door all day. Around 2pm I checked the door to find the doortag saying we weren't home. I spent an hour on the phone with customer service trying to get my package. They got a hold of the hub supervisor who said the driver "knocked three times" which is of course not true because we were home and listening for it! Plus we have a perfectly working doorbell that WAS NEVER USED! When I asked them to call back the hub supervisor to tell them we would come pick up the packages at their hub, they suddenly couldn't get a hold of anyone at the hub (this was still during working hours) - apparently nobody answers the phone at the hub when they know someone is calling to complain. Now I have to wait until Tuesday(!) and my husband has to take a day off work to stay home and receive the package. I hate them and will never order anything that is being shipped FedEx.

ooooh the same thing actually just happened to me today!!  I live in a condo complex and felt assured that a 'signature required' delivery would be safe with a neighbor downstairs. They get a knock at the door from another neighbor saying 'do you know there's a big box sitting in front of your door?' !!! Seriously.. how hard can it be to get a signature??!!

I am glad I am not alone in this matter, there is some comfort in solidarity.
My sister sent my wife and I some wine, which requires an adult signature upon delivery. I have had three Delivery Notices and the third was received today, WHILE we were both at home...no knock, or doorbell...made sure to stick a notice on the door though. I called 1-800-go-fedex and was treated like I was at fault, "the driver was there, put a tag on your door..." A bunch of inept morons!

I've have the experience with FedEx. They are terrible. My wife was home and they didn't even knock, instead we got the door tag. Not only do I refuse to use Fed Ex, I will not purchase anything from a vendor who uses Fed Ex.

This has happened to me TWICE. First with UPS and now with Fedex. I ordered a few items off amazon and chose the 2 day delivery option. My shipment was suppose to arrive today, and I made sure this time that I would be able to hear the doorbell or knock. I even checked the front door every 15 min. Later, I get on the computer to check the tracking and it says the delivery has been attempted?! Are they sending ninjas to deliver these packages?! I'm almost certain that the reason for this is because they don't actually have the package yet and are trying to buy some time by coming up with that bs excuse.

I wouldn't be so pissed off if fedex was honest about the delivery date.

i worrk as an admin shipper for 8 years now and knowing drivers from all the deliveries companies i can tell you exactly what it is first they always have the item they say they have because its scanned and it is location scanned so that it tells you where it is anytime it gets scanned it automaticly update the location now lets get to the point of missed appointment you know drivers dont have breaks and also dont have the choice to make overtime or not they have few option aviable to them tho when they feel they are not gonna make it in time or they gonna have to finish at 7 or 8 Pm they rather say you wernt home and they did put a tag they will fill the tag and throw ur part later on or if they are really honest they will PASS on your location for multiples reasons , as simple as Full,Cant find package in truck etc etc im not saying they are always doing it on purpose but still...... Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me ;)

I HATE HATE HATE Fedex. Like others here, I waited at home all day, always attentive for the bell/buzzer, and nobody came by. I checked online at about 3 in the afternoon, and apparently 20 MINUTES before that a driver had come by and "tried to deliver", There was even a tag on my building door WHICH I LIVE LITERALLY 6 feet from outside my window. But my buzzer had not rung. I don't think they truly tried to deliver, just left the tag and bailed!

Meanwhile, an entire day wasted-- and I can't wait at home all day again, so now I have to go to their pickup facility in THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE (you'd think in Queens, NY there's no such thing, but there is-- Fedex found a place impossible to reach by public transit) and lug it home myself Being a New Yorker, I don't have a car. This shouldn't be my problem-- this is the whole POINT of home delivery!

Not the first time this has happened with this company! It's bad enough when I miss the deliveryman, but when I deliberately STAY HOME to receive a pickup and they don't EVEN TRY, it makes me upset.

I have the same problem yesterday. The driver just left the tag without knocking or ringing the door bell. Otherwise, she would of known I was home. I complaint like no tomorrow without success. So, I ask to file a formal complaint against the driverwith a copy to the national office and an email copy to me. They made a second attempt on the same day and got my stuff at 5:30pm

They just needs some butt kicking.

I am experiencing the same problem today. There was a child's birthday party at the time that the delivery person indicated that no one was at home. This was on Saturday. They went back today and said no one was at home. My daughter-in-law was at home waiting for him. It appears to be the home delivery status that is causing the delay. The FedEx express was delivered today to the same location. Door tags were not left at either times.

I had a chat with my REAL FedEx driver and REAL UPS driver after the holidays to get the story after, once again, I was left a sticky for some important medcine that I needed that needed a signature. I was SO livid, that I called FedEx corporate and they made the driver come back at 8pm. :) But the story is this....the people who get screwed the most are those who are near the end of the route. The drivers are EXPECTED to deliver X amount of packages a day and be back at the depot by 7pm or so or they get dinged by the bosses. An attempted delivery is considered as part of that X amount. The temps mostly can't keep up with the schedule around the holiday - and that's why they usually carry two drivers to make it faster. As for FedEx ground - that's really RPS and those drivers own their own routes. If they don't feel like going out in the rain, it's their decision - as they bid on the route and do as they please. Still not a very good excuse - just an observation.

In my experience about 50% of the delivery attempts claims made by FedEx are lies...no attempt was made, no knock was made (i.e. I sit 5 feet from the door in a quiet room), and no door tag was left. When I follow up with FedEx through their 800 number, they are almost entirely unhelpful.

Now I just make it a point to email any vendor I buy from who ships to me through FedEx and let them know that I'm much less likely to buy from them if they ship through FedEx...they should switch to UPS.

I got out of work early to get a Fedex Saturday delivery. I have plenty of things to do, but since I know Fedex requires a signature no matter how worthless your package is, I waited. and waited and waited Always right by my door and I even checked the tracking info a few times over the course of the day. Finally at 2pm I checked the tracking info and it told me "Delivery exception- nobody was home" from 1:56pm. I ran outside. not tag and obviously no attempt had been made.

Now I have to wait until Tuesday to get another attempt which Im not even sure If anyone will be home to sign for it...

Go UPS!!

Every time a package is shipped to me via FedEx the story is always the same. "Delivery Exception: Customer not available or business closed." It doesn't matter if I'm home, it doesn't matter if I tell them to leave the package with my doorman. They will fail to deliver day after day.

I ordered an iPod for my girlfriend more than two weeks before Christmas and after several "failed attempts" and a dozen phone calls with FedEx, they ended up shipping it back to Apple two days before the holiday. I begged them to just make the delivery to my job. They wouldn't.

I will never again do business with FedEx. Their employees are incompetent, lazy morons. They lie to their customers on a regular basis and for the high shipping costs you will receive nothing but headaches and unreliable service.

UPS stands for United Pulverizing Service. They have smashed many items and damaged them beyond use. Frequently, packages are destroyed, but contents intact. You especially can tell when they use the vinyl banding. I have even called senders to verify that the packages were in excellent condition before UPS touched them. FEDEX has been much better for me, but I use the US Mail when I send. Tracking sucks, but the package gets there.

UPS drivers always ring our doorbell when delivering. This afternoon 3 of us are home,no noisy TV, Radio, etc....didn't hear a doorbell and I was at my computer in bedroom and checked the tracking link for a package I was waiting for. Guess what? It was delivered a couple hours ago! So,I went to the front door and there's the package.
Nice job Fedex driver....If it was "your" package .......
Com'on, all ya have to do is knock or push the little doorbell button.

The next day I was in the living room and just happened to here something like a soft "thud" on the doorstep. By the time I got to the door I could see the driver was moving swiftly to his truck. I could have yelled something like "Hey! Why don't you knock or ring the doorbell?" But, I figure it wouldn't do much good since I'm not his boss...

i'd rather have a sticky on my door and have to go get it than what happened today/yesterday. i'd been anticipating a delivery of ingredients for products, for my business. i hadn't gotten a tracking number from the vendor, they never sent one, and i had no choice in who it was shipped by or how. so when i emailed them and they said it was delivered yesterday and gave me the tracking number, i was shocked. uhm...no it wasn't. USPS left a small pkg, but there was no 14lb fedex pkg or sticky. i'd been home all day in a silent house, even checked my computer history and saw that i'd been on a website forum at the same time that it was supposedly delivered. i called fedex, they called the driver "he delivered it, left it at your door" well, of course he did! what else is he going to say? i checked with my neighbor across the hall, she hadn't seen it either, and is the snoopiest old woman on earth, sooo. also, i live in a town of 15,000 ppl...not like it's a metropolis. so, i called them back, they said they'd put a tracer on it, etc...great, wooot...still leaves me with out the ability to fill my orders. i can't imagine how long this is going to take to be resolved. fedex needs to fix their system in a major way. i wouldn't have used them at all if i'd had the choice, but i didn't.

The same thing happened to me on the delivery of my iPad.
My wife was home and we but we still had a signed delivery release attached to the front door just in case she was "indisposed" when the delivery van arrived.

Nevertheless, we still got the dreaded "delivery exception" - the signed release was still on the door and there was no "sticky" notice of delivery posted anywhere.

I was watching the delivery status online though and as soon as I saw the "delivery exception", I called FedEx (1800FEDEX) and asked them to attempt re-delivery the same day. I told them that we did not receive any notice and that there was a signed release still on the front door. They called the driver and told her to attempt re-delivery.

She DID and we got the delivery on the same day.

My advice is to check the delivery status like a hawk - ALWAYS post a signed release notice on your front door and call FedEx IMMEDIATELY when you see the delivery exception. They were actually surprisingly responsive once I complained.

Be the squeaky wheel...

In our case, the driver had attempted to deliver it to a neighbor.

Me too. I hate FEDEX! Stupid people answers their phone. They don't know anything - useless! Left a tag at my door telling me they'll deliver the next day, just sign the door tag. Well, I'm here. FEDEX is a no show. Called them up and they said they don't know what happened - amazing! Next time, I'll tell the shipper to use UPS or forget it.
