FedEx claims I'm not at home and can't deliver, but I'm home!

This is a problem that has happened to me and my girlfriend now several times (3 or 4). We will have ordered something online that's shipped FedEx ground, and we'll get an email that there was a "delivery exception," meaning the package couldn't get delivered, and the explanation will be something along the lines of, "Customer not at location." Problem is, one or both of us often work from home, so we know that we were home at the time it supposedly couldn't be delivered. Sometimes there is a FedEx door hanger explaning, sometimes not, but in either case, our buzzer works fine and not only that, our super lives in the building and is always around during the day for deliveries. So something doesn't add up. I double-checked with a shipper just to make sure he had the address right, which he did, and he chalked it up to "lazy FedEx delivery person." I called FedEx's consumer help line and they said that they would check with the delivery hub, but I remain dubious that anything will change.

I think our biggest problem is that we generally are not perceived to be a fedex customer, a third party we have ordered something from has hired them, therefore complaining to fedex gets us nowhere. I've got my own stories about guaranteed delivery by Christmas items received well after New Years, dozens of delivery exception tracking messages that were nothing but BS, and perishable items like the strawberries sent as fruit of the month that were delivered rotten yesterday because the geniuses at fedex who had managed to get the package to New Hampshire from Oregon apparently needed a couple of extra days to figure out the last 50 or so miles of the trip to my home, despite the package being clearly marked for 2 day delivery.
Complaining to the vendor/sender is my approach lately. Make it their problem. They're the ones who are paying for a service that is being carried out poorly. Eventually, with enough complaints, maybe they'll get the kick in the pants they deserve and which they apparently need in order to make any effort to clean up their act.

Exactly! So we should stick with UPS never had a problem with them. Only they come to my address last. I can't blame them after all these monkeys starting moving into our once quiet and resered complex.

I stand corrected. After printing out the tracking information for the box of rotten strawberries it was clear that the package wasn't sitting in NH for a couple of extra days. It was too busy ricocheting around the country on a bizarre and senseless tour of fedex facilities throughout the US, including Oakland, Indianapolis, Newark, and Memphis before landing here in NH. I can't blame the NH guys this time, they held up their part of the deal, the shipment was doomed long before they got their hands on it.
I'll reiterate my advice to complain to the shipper/vendor you've ordered stuff from. They're the only ones with any leverage with fedex, and sooner or later they might realize that fedex's reliability problems reflect poorly on them and chase customers to their competitors.

I no longer use any vendor who ships solely using FedEx. I tell the vendor that fact, and have even cancelled an order when I find that they will only ship using FedEx. The only way FedEx will change is if they lose customers and the guys paying for their "services". That means the change must come from the vendors who refuse to use them. We customers can refuse to be victimized by only choosing vendors who DON'T ship with FedEx. FedEx should be put pout of business.

I had issues with AT&T where the techs seem to rely heavily on automated phone communication and either don't knock, or don't knock heavily enough to rouse my nocturnal butt out of whatever trance i'm in. I do realize that these folks are on a busy schedule in a stressful job, but it would be nice to have less of a gap in communication, generally.

Fedex needs to be sued in court or fire those lazy people that don't deliver. I had many issues with Fedex with packages not being delivered on time. Yeah, I called fedex and told them about this many times, they simply don't care about customers that use Fedex. I wish Walmart.com would use UPS instesd of Fedex because they rock. Fedex needs to have a class action suit to change this.

When ever I order something online, I put in it, "FED EX SHIPMENTS REFUSED, not NOT ship FED EX".
9 out of 10 times it works.

We were waiting at home all day for a gift that was supposed to be delivered today. We had checked the door several times and were watching a movie in our living room. When we checked later in the evening there was a note on the door that they had come at 7:59, but they never even rang the doorbell. We paid a high cost to have this gift delivered today and they couldn't even be bothered to ring the doorbell. We called them and they say they can't do anything about it. What a miserable service!

I live in Brampton-Canada.
Our Fed-ex guy - calls up people out of the apartment building and makes us wait for 15-20 min.

Then once he has everyone in a line - he distributes packets like an ice-cream truck. Its ridiculous...

Amazing thing is - when he does not find the building buzzer number on the packet - he sends the packet back- with incomplete address (buzzer code not found). - as if he wouldve gone into the building to deliver the packets.

When I call the help-line to complain about his behavior - they keep me on hold and the manager is always in meetings and has no time to talk.

I never know what will happen to my next packet.

My company is a huge Fedex account - I think I should get these guys kicked out from the source & try someone else.

funny how fedex hasn't responded to any of these.. why have a get satisfaction page if you're not going to provide good customer support?

They want you to think that they give a damn. They don't, of course. Do not do business with any company who does their shipping only with FedEx. If the company won't give you an alternate shipping option, go elsewhere. Sooner or later, the companies who insist on using this unreliable service will reconsider their choice when they start losing customers. .

I live at a veterans home. We are here 24/7 365. Our shipping department is not, but we have a big sign, 4 feet by 4 feet that says on holidays, contact security for signatures, or deliveries.

Today I waited until noon, and they never even showed up.. Then I logged on to the net and checked and yes, there it was, the "delivery exemption" so I called fed ex's 800 number and raised hell.

Its now 6pm they have until 8pm. Otherwise I have to wait 3 days, until Monday, for the holidays to be over, before our shipping department will be there. I am very angry as I paid for next day shipping and WE ARE HERE.

UPDATE
Today is Tuesday 4 Jan. I just called FEDEX, and now I got 2 different excuses.
The lady on the phone told me my shipping department is closed today. I told her, no it is not, and I have been there 3 times, and that this location has people here 24/7, and that 2 other fed ex people have made deliveries..

The next excuse I got was "the driver has the day off", SO THE F__K What!!

I paid to have my package delivered, and its not here and my shipping department will be heading home by the time I get this done..

I am definitely FED UP with FED EX.

I was tracking a shipment of wine (requires signature) via FedEx. I work at home and can see right out the window. I saw the truck come up so I waited inside the front door and watched as the driver moved around in the truck for almost 5 minutes and then just sat down and drove off. Shortly thereafter I got the delivery exception notice that I was not home. The stupid driver never even got out of the truck, let alone come to the door. I promptly called and complained. Pretty pathetic service.

the service that Fed Ex provides is substandard, they stink !! I was expecting a letter from Indiana to Western NY, send on monday promised to be here on Wednesday,it contained a check from a customer, Saturday I tlaked to the sender and she was shocked that I had not gotten the letter.
I called Fed Ex, only to find out ,that the service that delivers is not Fed Ex,but a private company located in the Ghetto of Buffalo NY, their driver had the nerve to claim that he deivered the letter on Tuesday at 2.04 pm, funny , my husband was home all day with our sick child and nobody from any company was there. at 2 pm I had pulled in the drive way with a bunch of groceries which by 2.07 pm I was still unloading, so I guess I must have missed the Phantom of Fedex, and our security camera that is dated and timed does not show anyone but me unloading groceries, someone is lying !! FED EX your subcontracor is a fraud and a crook!!!

I had a computer ordered from Dell sent to my place of business. Someone is on premises from 7 am until 12 am daily. They said it was closed, but managed to deliver my payroll processor's package the same day to the same address. So dell got the computer back. They don't reship. I can expect my dell credit in 2 weeks. So my money is gone for 3weeks and I still need a new pc.

Got the 'delivery exception' message that said we were not at home... Complete BS as I was sitting at my home office desk which faces the driveway...I also have dogs in a pen that bark at everything and kids playing in the yard. There's no way he was here.

Package is way overdue, and it's a Friday... and I doubt we will see our package next week. Next time, I'm boycotting any store that ships only FedEx.

Expected a FedEx home delivery package on Saturday at work (via their tracking). Was working at my desk 10 feet or less from the door all morning. Recheck tracking and they they business not open. We had every door unlocked (an side doors open as it was warm). Called Fedex today (Monday) as it is rescheduled for Tuesday! What the!! When I questioned them that they have done this before, just skipped the entire industrial area and stated business closed, they said the driver marked us as closed, bull!!. I do my darnest not to get stuff shipped to me by FedEx or FedEx Home, but some places ship by whatever they want, no matter what you specify. We can't even get the FedEx guy to figure out which business is which in a row building, we are at the front and if I don't accept the package for the business toward the back of the parking lot, they just drive off, and I am sure they mark it as "delivery attempted, nobody there" FEDEX stinks.

just found this thread, JUST HAD THIS HAPPEN TO ME! I found three delivery tags on my door all on the same day claining they had tried two days prior to deliver, and that that was their last attempt. I instantly go pissed knowing those tags were not there the last two days so i called fedex about this, they said they'd send the package to a fedex location near my to hold for pickup and helped me file a complaint. Next day I got a call from a manager letting me know that the package was redistributed and is out for delivery today. Get a knock on my door accompanied by a fedex truck and got excited, go to the door to find a fedex guy with no name tag, sunglasses, larger than me, stronger than me at the door who was asing me why I complained about him and continued to argue with me for a good five minutes, asked for the tags back, asked me to call the company and tell them I got the tags. Insane. He finally left, luckily I had that call from earlier from a manager so I called the number back, let the manager know what happened, that it scared me, was totally inappropriate and with how upset the driver was I'm nervous now that if he gets fired he'll come back after me. Poeple are desperate nowadays, you never know. He knows what I look like, where I live. The whole thing is scary. And to top it off its almsost 5pm and still no delivery. BOO. I'm not happy with fedex right now and am now worried about a large angry hispanic man out there that I may have gotten fired wanting revenge.

I just experienced this crap, I've been sitting at home since 2PM waiting on a 200 dollar phone that was due to arrive at 430PM (I had tracked it online) and I updated my tracking to find out it had been changed to "delivery exception" at 325PM. I had been sitting next to my door (which had a "we missed you" note filled out on it) but my door had never been knocked on, nor had my doorbell been rang at all. I'm literally three or four steps from opening my door, and i'm very upset with this due to the fact I leave for California within a week and I want to make sure this phone is working and able to be used before I leave. I'm right now dialing to complain, because FedEx just screwed me over. My tracking online says it should be here tomorrow around the same time, but there's no sense in me not having it now, due to staying home all day just to get my phone set up. Screw FedEx, i'm using UPS whenever possible.

I have had two bad experiences with Fed Ex. The first involved a check of substantial sums which was delivered to a Fed Ex hub several miles away where a clerk said he could not make out the name of the person to whom it was to be delivered and wrote over that name, in effect changing it. When the package could not be delivered the first time, I received a Door Tag (DT) and called the number on it. The person who answered asked for my name, but since it did not match what the clerk had placed on it I was told that I could not sign for it as only the person on the label could pick it up. This went on for several days until the originating company stepped in and cleared up the mess Fed EX had made. The second involved exactly what these complaints are all about: The delivery person not knocking on the door or ringing the bell, but placing a DT on my window. I was then told that they could not reach the truck driver to instruct him on redelivery and that I would have to come to the nearest office (about an hour away) to pick it up. I was told by the dispatcher in the call center that this was a common problem, and that delivery personnel are instructed not to waste time at any one home and deliver a DT rather than wait so that they can meet their delivery quota. Can you believe in this day and age an operation such as this that is totally unable to communicate with its drivers? Fed Ex should not be given the responsibility of delivering important documents and packages and we would be be best served if it were out of business.

Same thing happened to me!! Came monday, didnt ring door bell... left a delivery note... came tuesday, didnt ring door bell.... left a delivery note... on the same day, i put a big piece of paper on the door saying "FedEx ... someone IS here, ring door bell please! -->" we will see if this works for tomorrow, if it doesnt i will be back to complain.

Had a package left by FedEx ground at my side door with a sticky left right next to the sign that says "Please leave all packages at the front door". At least they left the package...and, yes, I was home at the time.

Here is another reason for a "Delivery exception". I live in a rural community and Fedex deliveries are done by a contract driver who has purchased the right to deliver this route. About 25% of my Fedex deliveries are "Delivery exceptions" since the driver does not want to venture out to my location because he loses money (fuel and operating costs) on these one-off deliveries on the edge of his route. Typically I will get two exceptions in a row until he gets several packages to deliver out my way to make it worthwhile for him. I normally have to call Fedex and complain before he finally delivers. UPS never has "Delivery exceptions" for my packages because they are company employees not contract drivers.

Yep. And to all those who have had the door tag while being right next to the door and no knock or doorbell - we discovered why something that nonsensical happens: Guy doesn't want to carry the packages so he just runs down the street slapping on door tags, and no packages in his hands. If you had coincidentally caught him, he'd have to sheepishly admit no the package is back in the truck. Our neighbor witnessed one of these finally - guy doing door tags with no packages in hand and the truck a 1/2 a block away.

If the companies that you use do not give you another shipping option other than FedEx, I suggest that you stop using those companies and when you do, TELL THEM WHY you are no longer using them. Believe me, they will quickly reconsider their shipping choice once they begin to lose customers.

Well, I am from the Netherlands, ordered something from Brno, CZ, Monday it left, and thursday it should have arrived. It didn't. according the tracking website the package traveled through France and the Netherlands towards England, back to France again, and now it's back on it's way to England. I contacted them yesterday, and they would look in to it. Not heard from them since!

update: well, somehow They didn't want the package in England, it;s back in France again...Really, if fedex wants to go bankrupt, that's fine by me but please don't toy with my package as if it is a pinball-ball

update: package currently in the netherlands, hopefully the driver isn't how you guys described them...it's a sunny day today, so I'm going to sit in front of my house today. 7 DAYS!! it took them 7 days to make the delivery....clearly they are doing something wrong!
