Filtering and Post-Ranking

There are a number of contexts within feedly where it would be useful to rely on post ranking to cut down on noise or the volume of posts. Particularly for some active feeds. Slashdot has had comment ranking and filtering forever and I used to find it very useful.

I wonder if there is a way to integrate with postrank.com, which seems to do ranking of posts on many blogs. If so my ideal implementation would be something like the following. I would be able to specify feed-specific postrank cutoffs. On a feed page I would be informed how many articles had been filtered out and would be able to temporarily change the filtering level.

This data might also be useful for feedly's efforts in different contexts to pick out the articles/topics most relevant to a particular user. Top section articles might be those whose post rank exceed their blog's cutoff by the largest amount. Highlighted topics for the home page could also reflect the total excess post rank of articles within subscribed feeds for that topic.

Added it to the roadmap document http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?ke... under smarter filtering. Thanks for the suggestion.

I can think of 2 "phases" to this development.

1. Update recommendation engine to detect and "consider" PostRank attributes in a post.
- I for example, aggregate feeds thru PostRank, do some post-processing thru Yahoo Pipes (visual ranks), subscribe in Google Reader, and read thru Feedly =)

2. Provide PostRank integration (UI and preferences) for feeds/posts with no PostRank data
- Apply PostRank to All/per Category/per Feed
- Selection filter for All/Good/Great/Best posts

I think phase 1 would not require too much effort; the question is how much weight. Also to avoid confusion, disable it by default. I would be your first tester if you need one for this feature.

By the way, these are the pipes I'm using http://pipes.yahoo.com/rflpipes

Attached is how it looks right now in Feedly:

It was nearly a year ago. One way out is to apply PostRank is when the content is displayed completely inline. This would make it easier to filter out the noise (specially in tech feeds).

Feedly has so much data generated; Indeed Post Rank can be easily used to rank the articles in Feedly eco system.

For example, number of likes received or shared would be a good option to rank the articles/suggestions.
