Prolonged No Service with iPhone 3GS - 2nd Occurance

iPhone 3GS No Service problem. It's been an hour now, what's the deal? This is the second time it has happened within two months, the last time lasted a few hours! Not happy!

This is within my home which usually gets service just fine, but now the phone is in "searching mode" and comes up no service every time.

Hi Brent. This is Mary with Fido. Thanks for getting in touch, I'll try to help you here.

Have you tried calling Technical Support? This could be a device issue.

Let me know and we'll take it from there.

Thanks,
Mary

Hi Puneet,

As noted below and above, the bars are not always a direct indication of signal strength. If you suspect an issue with your device, I would recommend calling tech support so they can help troubleshoot.

Thank you,
Nina

I called technical support this morning. They helped me fix the problem. Apparently some iPhone's do this often so there is a built in option to "reset network settings".

For anyone else, if you cannot detect the Fido/Rogers network on your iPhone 3GS or 3G (ie. your iPhone says No Service or is constantly Searching...) follow these steps in resolving it.

1. Disable 3G in Settings/General/Network
2. Power off the iPhone by holding the top lock button down then sliding to power off, leave the phone off for 30 seconds
3. Power on the iPhone
4. Reset network settings in Settings/General/Reset
5. Turn on 3G
6. You should be able to find the Fido/Rogers network now

I have same prob. Unsually it is solved by power off and a short wait before powering on. (Maybe Disable/reset not essential?). THE POINT IS its a pretty aggravating prob for such an expensive phone; when are they going to solve it?

Thank you soooo much! This actually worked perfectly for me. I had tried everything after getting "No service" for 2 days. This was the only thing that worked.

Hi Mary,

How, exactly, does one get in touch with technical support? I would expect to be able to do so through 611, but all the options there seem to involve me paying money in varying amounts.

Hi Randy. 611 should be a free call from your cell phone. Alternatively, you can call Technical Support at 1-888-ROGERS1.

Thanks,
Mary

The problem occurs for me when I go inside my building, where there is no coverage, for more than a few minutes. Once I get back into coverage again, it just doesn't reconnect. It also happened when I came back from the US. While in the US, it happily reconnected to AT&T when I came back into coverage; but with Rogers/FIDO it just gives up trying. I found that putting it in and out of airplane mode a few times will sometimes work, and rebooting it will sometimes work, but overall it is a pain, since it is often in NO SERVICE when I am not aware, so people can't reach me. Even more odd, when in NO SERVICE and I try to make a call, it just silently pretends it is making a call, with no error messages or anything.

Hi All. These sound like device issues and they best way to get help would be to call Technical Support. They can help trouble shoot and document your issues.

You can call 611 free call from your cell phone or 1-888-481-FIDO (3436). Weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and weekends from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., your local time)

Thanks,
Mary

hey everyone,

I've been having this problem for the past month and this is the 2nd time...its quite frustrating w/o 3g network...you can probably get a new iphone if you bring it to the apple store and tell them that it stopped working....

a temporary solution so you have a phone, is to turn the 3g network off, and in a like about 2-3 minutes, your phone will be perfectly fine aside from the fact that your iphone internet will be a bit slower without 3g obviously...hope this extra info helps.

This is probably not a specific device issue. I had this issue last week and i now have it again today. My 3GS reports 'no service'. I contacted tech support and they said due to the weather, they were having 3G service problems at the moment. The temp fix was to disable 3G and I now have a signal -> .::Fido E (Edge). To be honest, I understand that here (calgary) there is bad weather at the moment (high winds) but for this to take out their service is poor.

It's a long way from Calgary to the U.K. but my problem is the same. At this price we should not be having this problem. Last year I was using a £20 ($30) phone which had no connection problems at all. I see that one user (on a video I Googled) advises holding the phone at its very top between thumb pad and 'pinkie'. Uncomfortable, insecure and makes you look pretty uncool! For the most expensive phone on UK market!

Had this problem since this morning and was so frustrated coz i can retrieve even my voice messages from my voicemail but then thanx to Alan.. Tried to disable my 3G and i have a full bar network signal. Thanx Alan.
And i agree about the poor service, we are being charge way too expensive and we expect to have an excellent service instead of this.

can someone with an iphone or other 3G device verify something for me? Over the last few weeks I have been getting several outages of the 3G service on my phone. Right now my phone says 'no service'. I'm currently in downtown Calgary. This didn't used to happen. It can happen anywhere, on the weekend it was the same issue but down in Bridlewood (SW of city). It basically happens daily now.. Any service issues with anyone else?

I believe there is a bug in the iPhone networking software, or perhaps even the hardware. I can reproduce this problem reliably by going to a specific place in my building. It seems to damage the networking and leaves it in a no service state every time I go there.

I went to the apple store and the genius bar guy said he had seen several other cases of this with both Rogers and Fido. He gave me a warranty replacement iPhone because he said replacing the sim didn't work for another customer.

Anyway I took the brand new machine to the spot in the building that causes the problem and the same thing happened. This is right where I get lunch so it happens every day.

I wish apple would take this seriously

You don't need to power off though. Just quickly go in and out of airplane mode. The problem is, doing this is annoying, and you have to notice that the phone says 'out of service.

I would say it's not a bug but abuse from the most expensive and sort of the best software/device/service in the world.

Does this happen to Contracters? i have an iPhone, and its been used by somebaody else, so maybe it was on contract? and changing sims doesnt help, im very sure that this phone is on Orange (live in the UK :D, this might not even help me, cause all you guys are from USA :( ) and so, i have put in my orange sim, and it comes up with 'No Service', maybe its because im a Pay As You Go customer? anyone? please help, this is bothering me.

Hey Koko-FW, Are you from the UK? Not sure what's the problem, but all phones that are sold by wireless providers in North America ARE LOCKED to their networks. This is about world-best DEMOCRACY ))) Unlocking is $15 and you lose warranty.

I am in UK on Vodaphone. The phone is new, contract. I wish |I'd never bought it. You look sucvh a prat, everyone using tehir cheap ordinary phones around you and your espensive 3GS gets no signak. Again and again.Hardly mnkaes you a cooll dude! The comments so far seem to point to a design error or 2. If you switch into Airplane mode and out that sometimes helps. Hold the phone between your little finger and thumb pad as if it were just falling from your hand. This exposes the aerial which is somewhere just below the apple logo. This helps too but it may take a minute or too to take effect. Basically, the aerial is in the wrong place. Typical! All that teckie stuff to sell the hardware and they can't design a phone that works at its most basic level.. Someone needs sacking (after a good ass-kicking). Boffins? No good to man or beast. They can't see the wood for the trees. Sitting in the aircon design office, probalby right on top of a huge mast. What do they care about us out here trying to USE their abominably-designed crap?

Hey guys, I live in Canada and I'm on Rogers. I recently had this problem today and to get a signal I just turned 3G off in General > Network > Enable 3G (off). And after a minute or so I had a signal. I phoned Rogers Technical support and they said that 3G in my city was "not working for now" and it should be up in the next 24 hours. I recently updated to 4.0.1 on my 3G-S and thought it was the update. I guess not.. hopefully 3G will be working soon though...
