Ford Fusion electrical problems.

There is a problem with our Ford Fusion, in the electrical system. Ford cannot identify where the problem is, and tells us to just wait until a fuse blows. When that happens, the car is disabled, and can't be moved because it will be stuck in park. This is frustrating, dangerous, and has been going on for a year and a half.

My husband has gone all the way to the CEO's office with no satisfaction. I doubt that the people at the 800 number would want to talk to us. We have been buying or leasing Ford products for almost 50 years. Never again.

    Nov 27, 2009: Ford Fusion 2006 58000 miles.
I just started experiencing the same problem, after 2 years of perfect behavior. Turn key lights, radio, air come on normally. Security lock flashes fast. Shifter will not come out of park. Engine does not attempt to turn over. With key on after a minute or so the dash will display "ODO error" (Sometimes DATA error). No option, other than to have car towed.
The independent service facility can not check codes because electrical CAN network has an error. Once they pull all devices, cycle battery they can then get on network but then there is no reported fault or problem. At some point, during that process, the car will just start working again.
Used car for 2 weeks and same thing happened. Tried pulling all connectors from fuse panel and disconnecting battery several times but no luck. Had it towed. Dealer got it working by pulling a few more plugs, battery, and resetting the CAN network. Worked fine for a day or two but when I went to pick it up it did not start up there in the parking lot. Currently in everyone scratching their heads.
Talked to the service departments of two separate dealers who were no help at all. After seeing complaints about Ford dealers (slow service, inability to solve electrical starting problems) and my past experience with dealers (high cost, secrecy, inaccessibility to the garage and technicians, etc) I decided to use an independent repair facility. I am up to $600 in diagnostics and towing so far, but am "guessing' Ford would be in to me much higher than that by now. The independent guy has spent more time than that on the car and has given me a loaner. My "guess" is Ford would have replaced a lot of things that did not need replacing by now (but they may have stumbled across the culprit). I can't afford that method of repair. My only option now is trade it in, but the dealer will just end up passing the problem on to some unsuspecting person. Maybe I'll trade to dealer who offers warranty.
Hoping to find the "real" source of problem.
    • AL, my name is Gustavo and i live in Brazil, my Ford Fusion 07' is having the same problem, i'm getting crazy.... It has only 18000 miles! Do you solved the problem? Could you share the solution with me?
    • UPDATE on my original post: I am surprised it has been four months, but I have had no problems for 3.5 months. The independent garage really worked hard to solve the problem. Ther disconnectected and reconnected all the CAN network conectors. They had the odometer circuit board repaired by a specialty "circuit board" shop. That was a couple of hundred dollars but they gave that money back when the problem re-appeared a week later. They ended up disconnecting every connector on the CAN network and adding a dialectic grease before reconnecting everything. I have read that the grease in normally for higher voltage connections but it seems to have helped. I had one instance about two weeks later were it did not start the first couple of times but started a second or two later since then (3.5 months) it has started the first time, every time. But I still think about it before every crank. I have to say I still love my fusion and plan on getting another, This seems to be a very rare problem. And I hope Ford solves it and I hope the "Ford reps" are reporting it even though Ford has no official records of my problems. Obviously all the computerized components have made things, overall much more reliable for everyone. But when there is a problem it can be very hard to solve and very costly (as Toyota can attest to).
Just to clarify, my problem was when the key was turned, nothing would happen and the gear shift remained locked. Happened four or five separate time and all but once of the times was fixed by simply disconnecting a the dash board display and un-plugging the connector, running the diagnostic check, and it would just start working again.

  • I'm happy to say we'll be turning our car in to the dealership in about two weeks. After 50+ years of buying or leasing Fords, we are done with them forever. Their response to us on this problem has been terrible. The car has been sitting in my garage for the better part of two years--not driven, for the most part, because of safety concerns. Ford's loss, although they've made it abundantly clear that they don't care. Hope you have better luck with your problem.

I just had the same problem. I was driving on the highway when suddenly an ODO Error flashed up on the screen and my car appeared to automatically downshift, power steering failed, and i was left stuck in the middle lane of the highway, with other commuters honking and screaming at me. I pushed down the gas and nothing happened. I eventually had to turn off my car and start it up again. The check engine light stayed on, until I got to my dealership. The car only has 26000 miles on it. Ford can't seem to find any issues. I'm afraid this will happen again, yet I'll be seriously injured in the process.

  • I’m Frustrated
I just had this strange electrical problem with my 2006 Fusion. Turned the key, the warning lights clicked on and off, the CD changer churned, the air bag switch blinked and no ignition.

It started up fine at the dealership. Although they found at least a $1000 worth of "problems".

I guess I will wait to see when this happens again.

Still making payments on it and am now deeply concerned.

  • I’m sad,feeling used, done wrong
I have a ford fusion, and its a 2006 ford fusion v6 sel ( We had it since 2007 ) and when we last month une 26 the engine light came on and barely was driving, we took it to ford they said we got a electrical problem ( $625.00 ) ( After taxes $650.00 ) Then once they was suppose to had fixed the electrical problem he said the PCM blew out ( the computer, Program Cenrtal Mutual ) Something like that , now they been trying to order the part that was suppose to be shipped off June 30- And delviered no later then July 9, 2010 . and still waiting! Ive called the main dealer ship in Columbus Ga ( Rivertown ford ) And Ford 1-800 number even spoke with a lady name Jodi , Sylivia From Ford customer Service and the currently Service manager from Rivertown ford name Kevin Brant. AND THE MANAGER OVER EVERYONE in that building name Stephen Mccleum or something like that and they all tel lme itts nothing they can do about it, we just got to wait, its a PARTS DELAY, and they lost alot of SUPPLYERS due to the recession last year and the year before that and they have a few supplyers but they dont have the part that we need! What kind of stuff is that ) NEEDLESS TO SAY we are stil paying on the car ,, Something we cant drive they said the PCM would be covered under the 80,000 mil warranty.. but it doesnt look like their ever going to get it in and they REALLY HAVE A I DONT CARE, LONG AS OUT VEHICLES WORK WE'RE SATISFIED!"Attitude" Ford is horrible, i would never refer them to any friends or family memebers.

  • Ok, not sure if this is going to help anyone here or not but it's wourth a look if your still having issues. I have a 2007 Ford Fusion SE with the 2.3L motor. The problem I'm working on sounds somewhat like whats been being talked about on here. The car's speedometer is not working and has a code PO720 which is the OSS ( Output Speed Sensor ) . I replaced the OSS sensor with the ford part. That didn't change anything. The next day the car wouldn't start and the shifter would not come out of park ! This was unrelated to the new OSS senor. So I checked the fuses in the fuse block under the hood by the battery and sure enough I found a blown fuse. It was the # 16 fuse, 15 AMP and it goes to the automatic transmission. If I unplug the the OSS sensor plug the car starts and doesn't blow the fuse, but when I plug it back in it blows right away. I'm now starting to check the wires going from the OSS sensor plug backwards to the fuse block. It's a pain because there is so much stuff in the way. I'm pretty sure I'm going to find a shorted wire or a bad ground on that # 15 fuse that goes to the transmission I just haven't gotten there yet. My thought was that maybe you might have either a blown #15 fuse or a bad sensor or even a short on that circuit. This may or may not help but it might be something else to check. Once I figure this problem out , and I will find the problem I will return and post whatever the fix end's up being.

  • I’m relieved
Well, my problem ended up actually being the battery.

Even though I was able to get a good read from my multi-meter. It turned out that I had one dead-battery-cell. Which basically gave enough power for my instruments, radio, etc. but not quite enough to start the car. From what the mechanics at the Ford dealer that I go to, apparently the batteries Ford uses for their cars are garbage.

If you have found this page, you will have a lot of different ideas as to what could be wrong with your car.

    --Don't fully trust your multi-meters!

  • I have a 2007 Fusion SE. 2.3L 5 speed. All of a sudden the car started cranking hard on starts. Being the weekend, our Ford dealership is closed on the service side. Well come Sunday Am, the car would not start. 13.4V at the battiery, everything is on and working. Try to crank the car over and the lights stay bright, but all we hear is a "click" and then nothing. Tow truck arrives and we try to boost it. The driver knocks the starter while I try to crank it, each time he hits the starter, it moves but not much... then the smoke comes out. Seems like we have a bad ground someplace. It is going to the dealer today, it is still under full warranty at this time as we only have 34500 KM on for milage.

Will update you on the fix.

If you have a automatic and had this same problem, it would stop you from taking the car out of park.

As I said, I will update you on the findings.

  • My 2006 fusion will not turn on at all. Just drove it a few hours prior. My 16 year old daughter hopped in it to drive to youth club, she only partially turned the key on. Then went to trunk to get something. When she jumped back in just a minute later and tried to start, nothing would happen. This also disabled the key remote. Nothing works. At first seemed to be battery
Issue, but the strange part is by the steering wheel/dash you can hear a strange clicking sound even when key is not in ignition. Guess I'll try to jump it or let it sit until morning.
    • This EXACT think happened to us last night. My husband partially started car, got into trunk, did not start...key remote did not work...nothing works! What ended up being the solution...we did get it jumped and had it towed but I haven't heard from mechanic yet. Our car was making that same weird clicking sound too...the only way to turn off the sound was to press on the brake! UGH!

  • My 2006 Ford Fusion SEL just started having starting problems. Turned the key and it clicked and didn't turn over. Got a jump and it turned on right away. Drove it around but not long enough I think and went to my brothers and when I left his house it didn't start and needed another jump. This time I drove it longer and didn't have any problems. This morning it kind of stuttered for a second like the charge was not full power but it started. Went to auto store they checked the battery with the tested and said the battery is good and this time took it for a long drive and everything seemed fine. Went to the gym and car did the same thing but tried it again and it started. Does that mean my starter is starting to go bad or what could it be. I don't want to get ripped off if I go take it to a mechanic.

  • Ok update to my problem starting. I had originally bought my battery at O'Reilly's less than 2 years ago and it was still under warranty and had went to them to have battery tested out and according to their tester my battery was good. I had went to AutoZone and they tested my battery too and they said it was good so had no doubt in my mind that my battery was good cause it was tested twice. I wanted to take my starter out and get it tested but that seemed too difficult cause it was more work than 1st thought. So I go buy a starter from O'Reilly's and was going to have my mechanic install it and he wanted to test the battery again and to find out I had a bad cell. He opened the caps a battery electrometer to find out the bad cell. He also did a load test to the battery and it failed. So went back to O'Reilly's and told them what my mechanic did and got my battery replaced and so far no issues. Can't believe these tests that say it passed when it's failing. I originally wanted to get me an Interstate battery but at the time O'Reilly's was the closest auto part store near where I lived and was the only one opened on a Sunday. But I got it replaced for free cause it was under the 2 year warranty so let's see if this new battery can last.

  • I have a 2006 Fusion. My son was driving it to his apartment on Sunday night, and it suddenly lost power and he thought he smelled burning rubber. He managed to get it to limp home, but it was "making a rumbling sound." We had it towed to a repair shop. They replaced all the spark coils and wiring (it had burnt out), and when they started, another fire started. The PCM was apparently causing something to overheat. So now we have to replace the PCM. My wife found an article on the internet that said Ford had known about this problem. No letter from them, though. She called the 1-800 number to see what they were going to do about it, and the rep on that line asked her "Can I have your lawyer's name and address?" then gave her a case number and told her we'd hear from Ford legal within 15 business days. Does anyone know of a class action suit we can join about this problem?

Hey guys, My name is Rick, I have a 2010 Ford Fusion and as I was driving today the radio just got muted by itself. Then I pulled over and shut the car off. I thought turning it off and then back on that this would fix the problem, but when I shut the car off and pulled the key out the instrument cluster stayed lit and a message that says check brake system and then another that says check advanced traction control appeared. I locked the car and unlocked it and still nothing,It toggles between each one message and it will not shut off. I turned the key and it starts back up and runs fine and brakes work fine, but the radio is still muted. The radio is on, just muted. The only other thing I noticed is that the alarm does not beep when I lock the doors. So I took it to advanced auto parts and they disconnected the battery for a few minutes and it did nothing. I'm freaked out because my instrument panel is lit and it wont shut off and I know that this is going to kill my battery tonight and I will need a jump in the morning. This is the first problem I have had with this car other than a tire valve sensor. I love my fusion, but if this is just a taste of whats to come its bye bye BETSY. (tha'ts what I call my car) If anyone has experienced anything like this and knows what I should do, seeing as how my warranty has run out, I would really appreciate some feedback from you you can email me at mrblack12@gmail.com. Thanks

  • I know this is off topic but my AC doesn't blow cold air. From doing some research believe the evaporator temperature sensor needs to be replaced. Cheap part if you can do the work yourself or pay over $600 to replace a part less than $20 because the dash has to be removed and this is a 2.5 hour job for an experienced mechanic.
