Clarification about Frame Sizes and Finding Out Mat Size/Image Size

Hi,

Quick question - do the dimensions on framed prints refer to the total frame size or just the size of the image inside the frame? [I presume it's the former but I need to check please]

Also, how large would the mat be for — say — the large 24 X 36 frame please? (Perhaps if you have them you can give us proportions so that we can calculate mat sizes in general and deduce what the resultant image sizes will be?)

Many thanks,

A.

    Hi Aftab,

The dimensions on framed prints refers to the image size inside the frame (assuming the buyer does not select any matting).

If you would like to calculate the total frame size, the dimensions of the frame itself are given in the widget, depending on which frame is selected by your customer. For your reference, the frames available for Pro and Pro Plus users have the following dimensions:
    * Box Frame 1.375"D x 0.75"W
    * Flat Frame 0.75"D x 1.125"W

Regarding matting, I have compiled a table of frame sizes (which, as previously mentioned, is the print size that the frame will hold) along with the corresponding image sizes and matting width.

    I hope that helps.

    • I have a 36Wx24H Frame, Would I still order the 18x30 print or a 16x20 with a matt? Thank you

      Hi Raquel,

Thank you for your post. This thread is regarding the framed print product that we offer via Fotomto. It sounds like you already have a frame and want to know which print size to order...is that correct?

Please send us an email directly with your response via http://support.fotomoto.com/customer/... and we'll be happy to help.

      Kind regards,
      Derek

  • Hi again Anna,

Could I just confirm one more thing based on what I understand from above: if I'm using a 24X36 image I guess that the scaling down (of the image) involved with adding a single matte will preserve width and not height. Meaning that rather than leaving two gaps on the sides fotomoto will crop of 1.3333 inches from the top and bottom (collectively). Is that correct?

So if I understand; if I want to give customers the option to add a single matte or not I should make sure that 1.3333/2 inches of the top and the bottom of the image are expendable.

    Many thanks,

    Aftab

  • Hi Aftab,

You are correct in that our widget will scale down the image and then crop the excess sides instead of leaving white-space/gaps. The amount that will be cropped depends on the original size of the image.

Assuming that your original image has a 3:2 image aspect ratio (meaning it will fit the 24x36 frame exactly with no matting), if the customer were to add the single matte, I found that 1.33" (collectively) would be trimmed off the top and bottom while the sides would remain untouched.

Let me know if that makes sense.

  • Hi Anna,

Thanks once again for the information -- how it works is clear to me now. In the example 1.33" off the shrunk version (that fits in the frame with a single matte) and 1.5" (1.33/21.33*24) off the original 24"X36" version.

    Many thanks,

  • Hi Anna,

Sorry to keep bothering you with this but I just noticed something else. The matte:image-size proportion in the fotomoto widget doesn't seem to correspond to the proportions we discussed above -- which makes it look like the image would be cut off (whereas in reality it would be ok).

In particular I'm referring to the 24" X 36" example. Since the print size is 20" X 32" and the matte width 2" then the matte would take up (2"+2")/24" = 16.67% of the 'in-frame' area. on the vertical.

However, looking at the fotomoto widget image I see that more like 26% of the 'in-frame' area is taken up by the matte. This means that the customer will see an image with a matte that covers up more than it will actually cover up on the real product.

Not sure if the above is clear -- please do let me know if not because I think fixing this would make for a much better customer experience if fixed.

    Thanks,

    A

  • One more thing also - I seem to be able to change the crop area in the widget even though the image has an aspect ratio that matches the in-frame image area size exactly (i.e. 3:2 aspect ratiio.

  • Hi Aftab,

It appears I provided incorrect figures for the matting width for the 24" x 36" frame. In actuality (which is accurately reflected in our widget), the print size for that frame size is 18" x 30". My apologies for my unfamiliarity with the new product and the inconvenience this caused. In congruence with this new figure, this would be 2" off of the scaled version (fits into the frame with single matte) and 2.4" off of the original 24" x 36". In light of my mistake, I've checked all the other numbers I gave you as well and updated the image in my first post with the corrected figures.

Unfortunately, regarding your last issue, I can't seem to be able to replicate the adjustable crop area. Could you drop me a line at support@fotomoto.com with a screenshot? Thanks.
