Customize Default Sizes on Order Screen

I would like to be able to change the default size listings in the first screen so customers don't have to click "more sizes" every time they want to select a 4x6 or 5x7 ect.

4x6 is a popular print size and adding an extra step just to select is is frustrating for the customer when they are ordering many images.

Thank you for considering my suggestion.

Hi, on my site (TTG website) when you click on add to basket the default small size is 8"x12", I still want to offer 8"x12" but I want it to default to 4"x6". 4"x6" is available if the customer clicks on More Sizes, I would just prefer it to default to this.

    Thanks

    Andrew

I agree - just noticed this change and what the widget decides is small, medium and large is silly! Makes it look like my prints go from $9 for small to $93 for medium - really daft!!

    Hi all,

Thanks for the feedback here so far. The request is understood and duly noted.

FYI, the decision to condense the list of sizes shown in the first screen of the Widget was a (difficult) UI design choice that was made so we'd have more space to list products and options in the Widget while keeping the interface clean and easy-to-navigate in the least number of clicks.

As you've probably seen over time, we're keen to make improvements in the Widget, but do so cautiously as it's a careful balancing act of keeping the interface clean while adding new products and the associated options.

We do appreciate your feedback on real-life usability - it's in *all* of our best interests to make sure the Widget is the best it can be on all levels and not confusing for our mutual customers =)

The product team is watching, so please keep the comments coming.

    Kind regards,
    Derek

I would also like to be able to customize the default sizes, preferably using different defaults for different sets. At a glance it looks like I don't have normal sizes, and with eCommerce you can only expect a potential customer to take a few seconds to figure it out.

Yes please change this and quickly! Ever since you changed the UI I haven't sold a single print!

I'm sure its down to the fact that now when a user sees the options they only see and moderately expensive 8x12 and horrendously expensive 20x40 print. I think very very few users are clicking on see more sizes to find my very reasonably prices 6x4s and 7x5s.

If we could just choose the three that appear as default I can hopefully start selling again.

I agree with everyone here except Fotomoto. I want my clients to see all of the options I've chosen for them to see. Fotomoto keeps making decisions for me about what's best for my clients. I want to be able to choose for myself what my clients see when they choose to buy a print from me. My patience with Fotomoto grows shorter every time they make a decision to make things 'easier' for my clients.

So, the request is understood and duly noted, but is anything going to be done about it? I have people looking at my galleries and either not buying anything or buying only a few 8x12's because they think that's the smallest size. This is so stupid. I feel like it's designed to make Fotomoto more money while the lack of options reflects poorly on me.

If this isn't changed soon, I'm taking my business elsewhere.

    Hi Ron,

I'm sorry you're frustrated. The decision to make any changes to the Widget is in the hands of our product team. Given the importance of the current development tasks that our engineers are working on (think new products) I don't see any changes to the Widget happening soon, but they are watching this and all other Idea threads, so if you're "following" the thread you'll get any updates as they come.

Do keep in mind that it's in all of our best interests for the Widget to be the best it can be, and ensure a high conversion rate of views to sales, as we only make money when you do.

In that case, I am done using Fotomoto. I will let my current galleries finish out, but I will upload no new galleries and will move on to find a better solution where the company doesn't make these important decisions for me and treat my clients like they're stupid. The decision to only allow my clients to see an 8x12 and two other sizes that almost no one ever buys is absurd. You've taken the three most purchased print sizes and hidden them from my clients. I can't afford to have my clients thinking that I'm trying to trick them into buying things they don't want.

I will also be using the forums and other social media to inform photographers of the absurdities they're in for if they decide to use Fotomoto.

Ron, we appreciate you as a customer and I can understand that you're frustrated about an interface change that we made to our Widget. Just to reiterate, our design and management teams made the change based experience, sales data, and several design requirements, including the need to allow space for new products that are in the pipeline like frames, metal prints, acrylic prints, etc.

We do value your feedback and we always do whatever possible to make Fotomoto the best it can be with limited resources. Keep in mind that any future changes to the Widget will be made with consideration to comments we receive in our Community, including this one of course. To that end I hope that the tone on this thread and elsewhere can remain constructive rather than becoming slanderous.

Last, if Fotomoto isn't working for you, we'll be sad to see you go but we certainly understand that we can't please everyone, and you're obviously free to choose the service that works best for you.

    Derek
    • "our design and management teams made the change based experience, sales data, and several design requirements"

You do understand that your customers have widely varying needs right? It seems that the data you based your changes on may need re-evaluated since there are reports of people seeming to lose sales because of this.

The only work around I can find at the moment is to turn off some of the larger sizes to force the widget to display the most popular ones. Means I'm probably going to lose the odd large print sale, but anything is a considerable improvement over no sales!

Since I've done this I've already had one large order come in so I'm back up and running for now. Really hope this gets sorted out soon though. I'm sure these 'new products' are going to be great, but if the crazy prices of Fotomoto canvases are anything to go by they're all going to be a waste of time for me and my clients.

  • I'm still having trouble with this. I would like to be able to which 3 sizes show up as default and have the rest listed under the "more sizes" option. While selecting sizes I noticed only some of the sizes I was selecting in fotomoto were showing up on my site. Is there an explanation of how the default sizes are selected?

20x30 is being listed as a Medium!?!
    Just seems odd.
    • The sizes don't make any sense. Fotomoto chose my sizes to be

      small: 8x12
      medium: 20x30
      large: 30x40

leaving the 3 big players in my lineup - 4x6, 5x7, and 8x10 - hiding behind a More Sizes button that people just don't notice. So beyond the poor choice of only allowing us to show 3 sizes to our clients, Fotomoto has made another poor choice by making those 3 sizes completely absurd.

Is there anyone out there besides Fotomoto who thinks this was a good decision?

    Hi Jake,

This thread's more of a "feature request" (Idea) thread, so you might want to create a new "Question" thread or email us for specifics, but since others reading might benefit from the answer I'll explain here.

The new Widget will, on the first screen, show the "best fitting" small medium and large print sizes that you have enabled in the Collection that contains the image. The size ranges mostly correspond to the Small, Normal, Large and Pano sizes set in the Product Pricing section of your Collection. Take "small" sizes for example - if you have 4"x6", 5"x7", 6"x9" or any of the 8" width sizes enabled, you'll see the "best fitting" size show up as Size > Small in the Widget. If you have disabled the "best fitting" size, you won't see Small under Sizes in the Widget.

If in the Widget you're not seeing a print size that you've enabled in the Dashboard, it's probably because you have disabled the "best fitting" size (based on your image's aspect ratio) in your Dashboard. It does depend on which Print Size Option you're using though.

I hope that explains the situation better, and if we can answer any more specific questions or address a particular image on your site, please start a new thread or email us and we'll be happy to help you further.

    Kind regards,
    Derek

Ron - as I mentioned to Jake, it would be helpful to keep this topic dedicated to the feature request that it was intended to be. It sounds like you might have chosen a Print Size Option that doesn't match what you're trying to accomplish, but regardless, if you're still going to use our service I am happy to personally help you find the combination of Dashboard settings that will work best for you - why don't you just send us an email and we'll see what we can do.

      Derek

I understand you're not going to budge on the decision to not show my clients all the print sizes I've chosen to offer them. But can we at least choose the 3 sizes that show up as Small Medium and Large?

You chose a small to be 8x12, which is bigger than all three of the most popular sizes AND a size that no one wants to buy because it's harder to find a frame for. I don't understand how anyone thinks this is the best option for ANYONE let alone everyone.

My clients see Small, Medium, and Large and assume those are the only three sizes offered because they're labeled that way. If someone sees "small" they assume that is the smallest option. Most people don't even see the "more sizes" button. They just leave my website because it looks like I only offer ridiculous sizes.

I understand that you want me to email you because I'm totally ragging on this stupid decision and you don't want people to see that, but this is precisely what the feature request is about, so it belongs here. Hopefully you can understand my frustration.
    • Derek (Official Rep) July 12, 2012 19:21
      Hi Ron,

To be clear for anyone reading along, Fotomoto can be set to show any of the available print sizes to your customer. As above, the first screen of the Widget shows a selection of small medium and large sizes, along with a link to "More Sizes" where the other sizes are shown.

The reason I asked you to email was because I offered to "personally help you find the combination of Dashboard settings that will work best for you" in case you're having issues with your individual site setup that aren't relevant to the Community.

I understand you're frustrated about the Widget interface, and please understand our response: we are working on company priority projects right now and do not plan to make changes to the Widget any time soon. We are on version 3 of the Widget, and may make changes to it in the future - if we do, your comments will be taken in to account.

      Kind regards,
      Derek

Oh... it gets worse. If I turn off all sizes except 4x6, 5x7, and 8x10, here is what my clients see...

So out of my 3 sizes, it lists only a small and it uses the largest of the 3 sizes. Is this the intended behavior?

      Hi Ron,

There is no way for you to select which of the sizes shows up as small, medium or large.

If your goal is to sell the same image as a 4"x6", 5"x7", and 8"x10", just select the Crop To All Selected Sizes option as explained in Print Size Options, and make sure you have those print sizes enabled in your Collection. Your customers will need to crop the image if the aspect ratio of the image and print size don't match.

I hope that helps and kind regards,
      Derek
    • I understand that, but you only show a small as an 8x10! That's not a small if it's the biggest size I offer! Why does this seem ok to you? The software doesn't work!!!! This whole thing makes me want to throw up.

Damn it, you had such a good thing going and you ruined it by taking away your customers' choices and replacing them with crappy software.
  • I do have to agree that the sizes shown on the widget is a bit annoying. I have on some images only 3 sizes available and so it shows two and makes you click the "more sizes" button to see the third when the third would fit where the more button is.

I understand why it was done thin way but at the same time I really dislike that bit of the interface.

Also, some of the (?) help boxes are just too big for the widget and won't scroll leaving some of the text hidden.

I don't understand the philosophy behind Derek's canned reply on this matter. It's almost as if the 'employees' aren't photographers. If they were, they would understand the entire point of 'sales' is to make it easy, affordable and efficient to purchase a simple print.

Your responses are more like 'too bad if you don't like it because we don't care! we're too busy working on other things to consider user feedback!'

At the very least the three options on the front should start at 4x6, 8x10 and 11x14 (giving the owner the option of changing those three sizes).

Not giving the simple option to the store owner of offering the standard print sizes on the first screen is a killer. I've had two friends check out the store adn their FIRST response was - 'WOW! Why so expensive?' Because of course the three sizes were outragiously large and would not be of interest to anyone as far as purchase.

I understand Derek's reply (though I HATE canned response, so impersonal) about the company having to make decisions on what's displayed and what is not, but come on! Are you guys even Photographers?????? Doubt it!

jason and rpropri, as with any technology company, Fotomoto needs to prioritize what the engineering team works on. Given the small size of the team, you might consider that the same people that would be making a change to the Widget are the also the ones working to bring new products (like framing), addressing bugs that arise, and making sure our systems stay up and running, etc. etc.

Given that, I hope you can understand why implementing a user interface change like this might not be the highest priority on our plate. It's not that we don't care or aren't listening, it's that there are other things going on that our management team has (rightfully I think) decided are higher priorities at the present time. You can be sure that they've seen your comments, and will consider them in the future revisions to the Widget.

      Kind regards,
      Derek
    • I understand that, but the widget doesn't work properly. You mentioned above that one of your team's priorities is "addressing bugs that arise". I'm referring to the fact that if I select only 4x6, 5x7, and 8x10, (the only way I can get the widget even close to selecting reasonable sizes) the widget only displays 8x10 and calls it "small". Anyone would agree that given those 3 sizes, the labels for small medium and large are obvious. Almost everyone looking at a widget that calls an 8x10 "small" assumes that that's the smallest size, and moves on without even giving the "more sizes" button another look.

I have mentioned this several times, including in a personal email to the company. But no one seems to care that YOUR SOFTWARE DOESN'T WORK! Shouldn't the fact that my clients are being turned away because your software doesn't work be a top priority? As you were so keen to mention in the past, you only make money if I make money.

I noticed that you've blocked the email I was previously using so that I couldn't post here anymore. I understand that you're getting sick of hearing from me, but that's just what I've come to expect from Fotomoto. You're making it clear that you don't really care about your users. If you can block 1000 email addresses to stop me from getting in your ear about your continuing lack of commitment to your users, then I can use 1001 email addresses to stay on you. You won't even respond to my calls to fix a BUG in the software, so what's it going to take for you to hear your users' feedback about how badly the widget sucks? I can only hope that Fotomoto is losing as much money as we are, so that you'll eventually come to your senses and give us back our choices. I fully expect a politely stated reply about how you care about us, but that you have company priorities to deal with, so we just need to deal with your crappy software for now.

    Sincerely,
    Your most pissed off user.

rpropri, to the best of my knowledge we have not blocked you, though please note that we use a 3rd party Community service here - so if there is a technical issue with posting here please take it up with GetSatisfaction.

As I have replied to you, our software is working as designed - there is no bug. You have an issue with the design, which I realize, and I have addressed with you our stance on the priority to address it, and again, if the UI is causing a loss in sales, it will be dealt with by our management.

I am not interested in a repetitious discussion or argument here, so unless you have any new information or questions that need to be answered, I'm not likely to reply again to this thread.

    Sincerely,

It seems we have an impasse - and when that happens I find it is always best to move on. Derek is doing his best trying to be diplomatic, but the answers he has given make it obvious that although we all think this is important, Fotomoto do not, end of story, so I'm off looking for another service like this (perhaps there isn't one, and perhaps that's why nothing is being done?) I sell next to nothing on here, but I can only imagine the frustration this must be causing professional photographers with customers who log onto their site in order to purchase prints of events and such. it's poor, very poor, no response needed or requested Derek, just stating the feeling for those who read this far down the thread.

I must say that to me the capability to show which specific sizes show up front and center to consumers is extremely important. I am OK with limiting to three sizes to save space.

I also understand that the Fotomoto team needs to set priorities. The challenge is that we (I) do not know what those specific priorities are, in order to buy-in.

Please do reconsider moving this capability up on the priority list. It sure seems like a no-brainer that it is needed.

I just can't understand when we select pricing for prints the 4x6 5x7 and 6x9 are listed as small, but the widget seems to ignore all of this and list 8x12 as small. The only way I can get 4x6 to show up at all is by having it as the only print option available! I'm all for keeping the widget interface clean and uncluttered with 3 default sizes and a button that says "see more sizes" but I would really like to select which 3 sizes were listed, similar to selecting the default between luster or glossy finish paper.

I love fotomoto but this is just irritating me. All I want to do is list 4x6, 8x10, 11x14 and "see more sizes"

I haven't made the switch yet, but I have six weddings coming up in the next four months (ugh!). So I'll probably just drop it and go with the manual "write down the image number and email" for prints.

Sucks because that was the reason I signed up for this and thought it would be so much more professional looking, which it is on my site, but for weddings you are dealing with grandma and grandpa and they are barely able to use their computer, much less dig into this widget and go swimming in all the size options.

A choice for a few basic sizes is imperative. Otherwise, this is simply a tool for very upper end sales. good luck fellas. Great idea but terrible response to issues. You need to learn how to let people down without sounding defensive or (excuse the pun) SMUG!

  • I’m concerned
    2
This afternoon, I had my wife go through the process on my website, of buying an image. She go to the "Buy a Print" button (although she wasn't happy about placement or appearance), but was totally flabbergasted by the dialog box. Her first comment was "Why is 8x12 a SMALL print?" Followed by similar comments about medium and large. She didn't find the "More Sizes" until I pointed it out to her, and her comment was something like "Wow, and you expect some suburban soccer mom that just wants a print of her kid at theatre camp to find the right size from THIS?"
So, I came in here to find out HOW to customize at least the default sizes 'cause I always start by presuming it's been thought of and I just need to find out how... So, add me to the photographers that are already experiencing problems with these defaults. I suspect I'll get a LOT more feedback after the large cat show next weekend when I point people at the web site.
I understand the small staff and high priorities, but this is problematic and it would sure be nice if somebody could break away for a couple hours to modify the widget. Even a couple days if they're really slow. I think it would relieve Fotomoto of one of the points of irritation we're experiencing in trying to provide a relatively painless way for our clients to buy our, and your, products.

Ironic that the one thing that makes this service useless is the one thing the owners are thumbing their nose at??

I still contend the owners are not photographers, but designers.

I saw fotomoto on another photographer's site and it looked very professional. I thought it'd be better than having clients write down the image number or description and have to manually email it.

However, I've had four people in the past two weeks that were confused with the fotomoto way and I had to instruct them to just write down the image caption/id and email it.

So basically, one step forward, one step back. No point in having it there causing more problems than it solves.

  • I'm not an event or wedding photographer, so I am just in the process of uploading all
my arty stuff to Fine Art America - very simple and straight forward ordering system and at least there is another avenue for sales! Fotomoto widget is a great idea, but this is forcing me to think which 'blog' images would actuallly make prints - interesting process :0) For the moment I have shelved ideas of quality reproduction and fine art pretensions - lets get some cash - I need that new Fuji camera ;0)

  • At the very very least, can the "More Sizes" button be made more prominent, as I see that being the most likely choice. Maybe make it bold, or better yet move to the top of the button stack. This is not really a fix for the problem, but a stop gap measure.
    • I hate that we're looking for such a poor compromise. This is not how it should be. The most popular sizes (and this isn't just true for me, they're the most popular sizes for just about everyone) should not be hidden behind any button, regardless of how big or noticeable it is. It just doesn't make any sense. I can almost forgive them for only displaying 3 sizes on the main page - almost - but not allowing us to choose those sizes is unforgivable and represents a lack of trust in their users' ability to choose these things for themselves, as well as a lack of understanding about how sales work.

  • Yeah, even that would help... I've been designing and building mission-critical systems for a lot of years, and I've always used my wife as my user-interface tester... She's a perfect "normal" person, so when something doesn't make sense or work for her, I pay attention. I've seen her dump out of a LOT of websites because the buttons and navigation tools were hard to find or hard to use. So, when she had so many problems with the purchasing widget, I started to get concerned about my customers. Hopefully, fotomoto will have a chance to take a look and make this more obvious and easier for customers to use in the near future.
    • The near future has come and gone. This issue has been around for 5 months now! It's pretty clear at this point that the reason this hasn't been dealt with isn't that other priorities are taking precedence, it's because Fotomoto simply doesn't want to change it. Can they really expect us to believe that they couldn't make these small changes in 5 months?

    Derek,
Is there any update on this.
Can we at least get an explanation of why it can/will not be changed.
We can easily choose a default between Luster and Glossy prints, I wish it was that simple to select our own 3 default print sizes.
I love the idea of having 3 default sizes and a "more sizes" button, but I simply want to select my own default sizes.
4x6 is a popular size for my clients, and hiding it behind "more sizes" adds another click for every photo. 1 extra click is insignificant by itself, but when someone wants to order several images it becomes frustrating to have to click 'more sizes" every time. And this is after the immediate confusion that comes about when a client sees that an 8x12 appears to be a "small" print when listed in the default small medium and large sizes that are selected for us.

In my situation as a wedding photographer clients may want to order +100 different images as 4x6, and maybe a few 8x10 or 11x14. Obviously I want MY most popular size to be displayed, and every photographer's popular sizes will be different, It would be awesome if we could choose our own!

I LOVE fotomoto, but this one little thing just frustrates me. Shall I wait and hope for an update or is it worth the time exploring other options?

  • Hi Jake,

I'm sorry that you and other sellers are frustrated. Our official response is at the top of this thread, and unfortunately I have no status updates for you at this time.

I see you've written in to support and I'll be happy to work through what's happening on your website individually - hopefully we can clear a few things up.

    Kind regards,
    Derek

  • I’m frustrated
    Dear Derek,

I am an experienced photographer and been in touch for a long time with the printing industries and processes. Here is my point:

Even if I only allow for 3 different sizes on, let us say, a print, when the user clicks on "buy print" only one option is suggested in terms of size and, if he wants to access to the 2 others, he has to click "more sizes". Also, it is labeled as medium or small or large. This is inconvenient because:

    a) TEDIOUS: I would like the user to directly see the 3 size options without having to click on "more sizes"

    b) TENDENTIOUS: the suggested option is usually the most expensive

    c) CONFUSING : maybe 2 of the sizes are classified in the store as small and one as medium, but, comparing one to another, the appropriate labeling should be "small" "medium" and "large" for the set of 3 since the user ignores the other sizes.

While I congratulate you for the good job on the widget, I do think SOME ACTION IS NEEDED. I don't think I am the only one to support these points and experience shows they are important.

    Thanks for your consideration
    • Hi wtensen,

Thank you for the constructive feedback. I understand the issue completely, and our product team (including senior management) is aware of the situation. Unfortunately I can't promise that we'll be making changes to the Widget in the near-term but I am fairly confident in saying that something will be done in a future release of the Widget to address the issue.

      Thanks again and kind regards,
      Derek

  • An update on this, the system will always display three options, if there are 3 options available.

This only affects users whose widget was showing less that 3 options.
Everyone else's widget will stay the same.

Now that Fotomoto is back, I hope this request still gets looked into.
I have friends who'd love to buy 4x6 prints for their desks or offices, but they don't see it initially.

At risk of repeating everyone's gripe, here's my example:
    I sell 4x6 for $1.50 and 8x12 is $7.00.
If they see $7.00 and I have not educated them, they may not look at More Sizes.

I know this because I work in customer service and deal with people who miss important things all day.
    :D
