I’m perplexed

fotomoto + Squarespace 6 gallery problems

I'm not sure how much you can do about this, but your person on twitter suggested I post here. Anyway, onto the issue:
I've just started using the new Squarespace v6, and I'm not getting the 'for sale' stuff come up under my photos with it. I do know I've injected the code properly (in the footer section), as fotomoto has picked up the images when I looked at the mobile site. I suspect it's something to do with the way that galleries are displayed now on SS.
so, specifics: I'm using SSv6, with the Wells template. My site is www.jakefaulkner.com (custom domain name on top of jake-faulkner.squarepace.com), and my fotomoto pulls automatically from that site. I've tried using both the gallery as page thing, and gallery as a block of code thing (see jakefaulkner.com/places vs jakefaulkner.com/prints to see what I mean) - neither seem to work.

ok, so I found a fun twist on this. The buy button is showing under the thumbs for the gallery, but not in the lightbox. Showing in the thumbs bit buggers up the formatting on the page a bit, but it does mean I might be able to work around it by using individual photos on the page, rather than a gallery of photos.

  • I've got the same issue with the Wells template on http://andy.bryant.name - and I don't think manually adding the buy buttons is going to work.

    • Hmm. Quick response, but no solution. They just said I could add some custom CSS but that they couldn't support me, and it might break something ... Looks like I can add CSS to the gallery page... but I've got no idea what to add ...

      Hi Andy,

Thanks for the additional investigation and for logging a ticket with Squarespace. Unfortunately making Fotomoto work on your gallery is going to require more than CSS changes. FYI this has more to do with our Fotomoto Script not being able to detect which image is currently displayed in a "gallery block".

I will follow up with our contact there and let them know about the response you received so everyone is on the same page.

We want you to be able to use Fotomoto and Squarespace, so hopefully you can be patient while this is resolved. If you can't wait any longer, please email me at support to discuss options.

      Thanks again and kind regards,
      Derek

  • Hi all,

Just wanted to post an update here - several months back we implemented a solution to try and make more Squarespace themes compatible with Fotomoto, then Fotomoto was unavailable for a few months as a result of a change in ownership.

Now we're back, but it seems that now not many Squarespace themes are compatible with Fotomoto. We are going to get in touch with them again to see if there's anything we can do, but for the moment, it's just not working so well.

If you want to use Fotomoto and you're in a hurry to get things up and running, the best I can do is to suggest you try using a different service from the list here.

I'll post updates on the situation with Squarespace in the thread here as they come in.

    Thanks and kind regards,

Hi, I have a SquareSpace photo blog that I would like to use with fotomoto. Each day a new photo goes up. I have the photo in an image container in squarespace and I have checked lightbox so if you click on the image it displays larger. Things are not working very well, There are no buy buttons on the blog post, they only show up when you are viewing the lightbox (clicking on the image) and then they only show up for landscape orientation images and not portrait orientation images. What is worse, if you click on the buy buttons nothing happens until you exit out of the light box. At that time the fotomoto window appears over the blog post.

This looks and works really bad. Can anyone offer suggestions on how to get this working better? I know that not all squarespace templates play nice with fotomoto. Can someone tell me which one might work? I have already tried a few without success.

    Hi all,

I just wanted to post an "official" update here. We apologize for any inconvenience this situation has caused, as we always do our best to provide an easy-to-use solution that helps people sell their images.

Long story short, Fotomoto was previously working with Squarespace 5 and several Squarespace 6 templates, but since then it appears that Squarespace has updated some of their code and now Fotomoto currently doesn't work on the majority of their templates.

We are in the process of testing Fotomoto compatibility with many of their templates and so far have found that Fotomoto is working within galleries using the Flatiron template, so if that theme meets your needs you might want to give it a try.

We have contacted Squarespace about the above and will do our best to work with them and come up with a simple solution for our mutual customers. We'd love for this to happen immediately but we just can't promise a timeframe on when the issue will be resolved.

If you want to receive updates on the situation, please be sure to 'follow' this thread as I will be posting updates as they come.

Thank you for your understanding and kind regards,
    Derek

  • It's not working on the Flatiron template now either. Well, to be fair, it's working in a weird way. If you Ctrl-F and search for "Buy" or whatever you have in you buy buttons, it suddenly appears underneath the photos. I've checked other themes as well and this seems to be the issue in all of them.

    Hi Matt,

Thank you for the post. I tested Flatiron again and am also not seeing the Buy Buttons appear now. That's the not-so-great news. The good news is that we spoke with some good folks at Squarespace recently and they said they were going to pursue a solution on their end, so hopefully that comes to fruition soon!

One thing you might be interested in - when I was testing I found that Fotomoto works on a Slideshow gallery block in the Avenue template, so you might want to give that a try.

So now it seems that I can't either on Squarespace?

I like squarespace so I won't be changing to another websiteservice so I hope this gets resolved soon so I can use fotomoto with it.

    • Hi Derek,

I have the Avenue template. I just posted a new image on a blog page, using a gallery block to insert the image. After awhile the image appeared in my fotomoto dashboard but there still aren't any buy buttons. I tried all the different gallery settings / designs, to see if that would make a difference, but without any luck

Or do you mean to use the gallery block only on a regular page, and not on a blog page? I haven't tried that yet ( though if the fotomoto works with the gallery block on a regular page I can't see why it wouldn't work either on a blog page ).

I would like to only use the fotomoto cart on my images that I place in my blog or on my blog pages...
    • It is working now! I was looking at the page from within Squarespace, but when logging out of Square space and using my actual web address ( the one that visitors would see and visit and that is linked to my Fotomoto ) I now can see can see the buy buttons / Fotomoto cart. I'm using the grid design of the gallery block... :

      http://www.livingwithpictures.com/new...

I hope I can still fine tune the way the buttons look or appear underneath the image, but at least it seems to be working...

  • Ok, so I managed to make the buy buttons look better and all aligned now underneath the image by using the slideshow design in the gallery block ( with two empty spacer blocks at both sides of the image to make it smaller, but it also works without spacer blocks ). The other designs like 'grid' work too but then the buttons don't appear as nicely underneath the image, so slideshow is the way to go.
    • Hi Phil,

Thanks for keeping us posted on your progress, and I'm very glad to hear you got it working!

As for the spacing, putting empty spacer blocks in is a very crafty solution which should work just fine. For you or anyone reading along, the Buy Buttons can also be customized directly by adding custom CSS as explained in Customizing the Buy Buttons.

As mentioned in the article, we don't provide CSS support, but since Squarespace is obviously a very popular solution and any fixes we find will help other Fotomoto users, so you can just drop me a line if you need a hand.

I hope that helps and kind regards,
      Derek

  • Hi all,

I just wanted to post a new update on the situation here.

First, we've done extensive testing across Squarespace 6 templates and have found that Fotomoto will work as expected when using Slideshow gallery blocks on a page when using the Avenue template. We recommend using this template for now while we work with Squarespace to support other templates.

We recently spoke with the good folks at Squarespace and they have been very helpful and supportive of getting Fotomoto to work on their service thanks to all the feedback they've gotten; we're working together now to make this happen.

Last we appreciate all of the comments, feedback and patience from users in the Fotomoto community on this subject - we hope to have some good news for you in the near future! As above we don't like to make promises on timelines in case things run late, but we are working on this as a high priority.

Hope that helps and kind regards,
    Derek

  • Hi Derek, I just signed up for Squarespace and Fotomoto. I'm currently trying to integrate the two accounts with no luck. I've installed the correct script and the Avenue template, but Fotomoto isn't pulling any of the images from my website much less giving me 'buy' buttons on any of my images. Hi all,

Thank you for the continued interest in using Fotomoto with Squarespace. I have emailed them several times to let them know about the interest, and haven't heard from them in quite a while now.

The best I can suggest is to mail them directly, and feel free to include a link to this post in your message, and feel free to invite others interested to post here. Hi ladyinabox,

Yes, the issues with Squarespace sites remain, but if you're using Avenue and a slideshow block it should work nicely. Note you may also need to disable the "Show Thumbnails" option in the gallery.

If that doesn't work, please post or email us the URL for your gallery and I'll be happy to take a look at what's happening.

I hope that helps and kind regards,

The person who started this thread did so 3 years ago, and yet there is still not a resolution to this issue with the Fotomoto buy button working reliably with Squarespace! Both companies should be embarrassed by this ongoing affair.

I have been a Squarespace subscriber for a couple of years now and they are just too good at what they do to leave to get a reliable situation with Fotomoto with another host. So today I went looking for a solution by contacting Squarespace. They were unable to give me a solution to the Fotomoto buy button not reliably displaying on my images (with Chrome, Firefox and IE), and that's with me following advice such as using the Adventure theme, etc. They, not surprisingly, blame Fotomoto for this, while in this thread Squarespace is blamed. Finger pointing only works for those who have the problem, not for the customers.

I've opened a trouble ticket with Squarespace and will work that ticket for as long as necessary. However, Fotomoto must also get on this and get it resolved. If that is not possible, then I suggest that Fotomoto remove all installation references concerning Squarespace and issue an official notice that Squarespace is not supported - doing so will save a number of people time and frustration. If you can't fix it, then don't claim compatibility, even if only claiming limited compatibility.

However, if Fotomoto is interested in fixing this issue, then round up some decision makers and pin Squarespace decision makers down long enough to get to the root of the problem for the sake of the *paying* customers of both companies. I'm sure that the solution is simple enough to implement, you just need to discuss it and take action. Even if Squarespace restricted the Fotomoto script to a special theme, that would be a great start and could provide the basis for a more universal solution.

In closing, this problem situation can't be allowed to go on like this. Either fix it or pull Squarespace support. I would rather be told no than wrestle trying to get something to work that is unreliable. It's long past time to stop talking about workarounds and hacks - get this fixed or call it quits.

    • This may help:

Using Firefox version 36.0.4, using the Inspect Element Performance, when the fotomoto buy button fails to display, the fotomoto script FMJQ A.event.add executes twice, with the second execution the very last in the script execute stack. When the buy button does display, that script executes once, and early in the stack. In addition, FMJQ .ready script executes AFTER the A.event on a good buy button load, but BEFORE on a bad buy button load.

Without trying to become an expert in your code, it looks as if execution of the A.event script is lagging, which is probably due to Amazonaws add-hoc responsiveness. I surmise that, since the script executes in the wrong order, or late in the stack, it's job is not complete and the buy button DIV doesn't get generated.

These observations lead to two possible conclusions: 1) Amazonaws is varying its responsiveness (no surprise), 2) Amazonaws is executing your scripts in the wrong order and it's simply luck when they execute in the intended order.

Also worth pointing out is that the fotomoto-related scripts take a whopping 9.34% of the total page load time, the highest time of any of the other page processes involved. I'll leave the details to your techs, but you folks are loading stuff into the browser that is questionable if needed. Your "widget" is very heavy. Perhaps, as I speculated in my prior post, so heavy that Squarespace doesn't wait for all of your scripts to execute, which is exasperated by Amazonaws's handling of requests "when it's good and ready".

Keep in mind the nature of the Amazon cloud service. In this case, you have a web page that is generated by a private server (Squarespace) and you are trying to integrate cloud-generated content on the fly. That alone is a challenge. Add heavy scripts and you may have a tough situation to handle with fast web servers such as Squarespace. Slower web servers let you get away with slower responsiveness, which is why Squarespace seems to be what's "broken". At any rate, from what I see, this is not a Squarespace issue based on the fact that your scripts run in the Amazonaws space. I could be wrong, but simply logic is suggesting that you folks take a close look at Amazon as the culprit, or look for ways to reduce your back-end data processing or reduce the weight of your store widget. Perhaps some of each.

Hope this helps. If I put any more time into this, I'll need to apply for a job at Fotomoto. ~Pat
    • Well, thanks for discussing this issue because it will help me decide what I will do regarding the use of fotomoto (I won't be leaving Squarespace). And, while this could be thought of as a "development discussion", think of it as being transparent to help those interested feel that the best effort is being put forward to resolve this long-standing issue.

#1: Polling the DOM is the old way, I agree, and is prone to error. But, looking at their HTML I see ways to glean which is the target image, You could go by the CSS class they assign to it, or by size. However, I understand that you can't just make changes for Squarespace, your code has to work universally. So that puts fm in a tough position. I think you'll find that, over time, many web host will move to heavy-script, HTML5 and other technologies that will make it difficult to work with all universally.

#2: Got it on the DIV injection.

While what you mentioned above may be rough spots for fotomoto, I still think you have a responsiveness issue. Again, the buy button DOES display some of the time. If your scripts couldn't locate the image, why can it sometimes? Squarespace is going to embed its images the same way on each page post. As for DIV injection, again, why does it sometimes work? And why does it work better in Chrome than IE? I encourage you folks to look to your own systems to evaluate your scripts & data processing first. Then go after page presentation.

As for Squarespace responding, since Squarespace+fotomoto users are probably few, they probably don't feel the need to accommodate fotomoto and I suspect this situation will continue. I will apply as much pressure as I can with my Squarespace trouble ticket, but I'm not going to the bank with the check just yet.

Thank you Pat - again I really appreciate your efforts in contacting them, and with luck we might get some more traction in getting this resolved.

Regarding this being "back on to Fotomoto", the customer care representative replied to you that "...the Fotomoto script lacks specificity in how it targets its injection points", which is almost precisely the issue I mentioned above. By default Fotomoto will target IMG tags in the DOM and inject the Buy Button DIV below them, but we can (and do) change which element is targeted depending on the Publishing Platform selected in the Dashboard. As I mentioned above, the issue is that we don't know what element to target in their slideshows.

So to move forward, we need to know which elements to target, particularly in a slideshow where there are multiple images with no distinct identifying class or code.

I will forward the email you sent to the customer support and/or contacts we have there, and feel free to update your reply to them as well. If we have their help to answer our questions, we should be able to resolve this issue in fairly short order.

      Thanks again and talk soon,
      Derek
    • "the issue is that we don't know what element to target in their slideshows"

Keep in mind that the buy button DOES display some of the time (with my tests), with the least number of failure in a Chrome browser. If the "injection point" were the issue, given that nothing else changed with the content of a page, then I would assume the buy button would consistently NEVER appear. Why is it that is works some of the time, and not others? I encourage Fotomoto to explore other possibly causes such as response time & script execution order that I've referred to in this thread. Avoid getting stuck on one theory, even if that theory seems to make perfect sense.

  • Actually, it may be more like people abandoning Fotomoto because Squarespace has many capabilities Squarespace users don't want to forfeit, which was my case. In addition, Squarespace does have integrated e-commerce at a competitive price. The folks at Fotomoto have a technical challenge with this situation which is not entirely their fault and they would be wise to either resolve the Squarespace issue or state non-support, and to keep people informed as they haven't done with this thread.

  • Thanks Pat. I'll mention what I've noticed; in all support examples where people have linked to their squarespace site asking for help with fotomoto integration, the squarespace site is no longer up and running or it is obvious someone has switched to a different platform. That's just my observation, but sure, they could be abandoning the idea of Fotomoto as well.

I'm grateful that Derek from Fotomoto is at least willing to discuss the issue, unlike the unanswered enquiries on the Squarespace forums. I don't think Fotomoto should advertise Squarespace integration with a green checkmark when it should be a yellow question mark.

  • When I was dealing with this issue, there was two-way finger pointing where SS blamed FM and visa versa (SS did handle my support request). And, while Derek was willing to discuss the issue, the FM team was unable to solve the issue. Aside from technical issues, I image that SS doesn't have good motivation to promote competition with their cash-cow e-commerce offerings, so I'm not surprised that this issue doesn't appear to be corrected.

  • Yes, thanks. I had similar thoughts re: SS and motivation. Unfortunately, they don't provide a similar shopping-cart-to-fulfillment product, which I would much prefer.

  • Thanks all for the posts here, and to clarify, yes there was a lot of back-and-forth with Squarespace...more than I'll elaborate on here, but long story short it took a long time to get the answers we needed in order to fix our compatibility with Squarespace. Now after all this time it looks like we have the info we need, and fixing this is one of our top development priorities. It may take some more time because we have some important improvements to make in other parts of our service, but after that we're going to get this handled.

Given the complexities I can't even estimate an ETA, but hopefully we'll see this fixed in 2016!

One last thing, keep in mind that we do have people actively selling using the Avenue theme, so if you want to try and if you need a hand getting that set up just send us an email with your Store ID or website address.

    Kind regards,
    Derek

  • Thanks Derek, that's very good to hear. As it so happens, I had already been working with the Avenue template. I now have a test of Fotomoto set up and working on a Gallery block within a page.

2016 is a bit of a fuzzy commitment for fixing this issue (I'd like to have it appear on Image blocks as well), but it sounds like there is going to be some investment in the platform overall, so I'm pleased with that.

One thing I might suggest is to have Squarespace 7 listed in the options of service providers when signing up (even if it is the same script--for now--used for SS6).
    • You're very welcome Daniel,

I realize that "2016" is a bit vague for a completion date, but we typically don't promise any release dates before they happen, as it's very hard to gauge whether something much more important will come up, or whether the tasks ahead of this in the development queue will take longer than expected, so I'll have to just be as honest as I can and say that this is about the #2 top development priority for our company at this time, along with a few smaller improvements.

As for which version of Squarespace, we'll put in to our registration process whichever is the current working version when we've released updated support.

Thanks again to you and all the others here for your comments and support - we believe that Squarespace is a very good platform to use to generate your website and we look forward to it working seamlessly with Fotomoto as the two should be a great combination for photographers wanting to sell their work.

      Kind regards,
      Derek

  • Just an update. I've continued to work on my site, and one particularly annoying thing I've found is that the Buy Button toolbar only appears on my images seemingly randomly. Refresh a page, and it disappears from the images in the gallery. Reload, gone. Refresh, it's back! Refresh, still there. Refresh, still there. Refresh, gone. Not reliable, unfortunately.

  • Daniel: 8 months ago I posted in this thread the same issue with the random appearing Buy button, as well as other issues. At that time I found that there was no way to get reliable operation with Fotomoto on Squarespace, and that situation has not since changed.

Fotomoto: By allowing people to believe that they can get any level of success with Squarespace is not serving your customer base well. 8 months ago I suggested that you either provide full support for Squarespace or state no support at all until fully resolved. Rather, you have allowed people to believe that they can use Fotomoto with Squarespace, which people continue to find problematic. As such, people such as Daniel are being allowed to waste their time and reporting problems on this support thread which further degrades your offering. Allowing this nebulous situation to continue is not is Fotomoto's or anyone else's best interests.

  • I was able to get the buy buttons on my squarespace 7 galleries using the API. I use the Wexley template but this may work for others.:

    <script src="https://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.12.0.min.js"></script>
    <script>
    $(window).load(function(){
    $("#thumbList > .thumb").each(function(){
    var d = $("<div></div>").appendTo(this);
    FOTOMOTO.API.showToolbar(d, $(this).find("img"))
    });
    });
    </script>
    <script type="text/javascript" src="//widget.fotomoto.com/stores/script/<siteid>.js?api=true"></script>

I'd be curious to see if this method works for anyone else.

  • I’m frustrated
I WILL NOT abandon Squarespace for fotomoto, but need this functionality to work. Squarespace has other integration that works extremely well and is an elegant solution. Is this ever going to work? Also, the installation information is not up-to-date for Squarespace. I don't even know how to tell what version I'm using, but your support documents look like the old version of SS.

  • pwolfamv; I inserted that into the code injection on my site (jamespearsonphotography.com) using the Wexley template as well - but nothing is appearing. What other settings did you have on your site?

  • James,

You need to replace siteid text (without the arrow brackets) with your fotomoto store id found in the settings panel.

  • ok...so I replaced the with my fotomoto store id. Nothing has happened yet.

A bit unclear on what else I need to do here - it's on the Code Injection (in the footer) on squarespace, are there any other settings I need to enable/disable on the Wexley template for this to work? Or perhaps something I need to do on fotomoto?

  • Hmmm, everything looks good on the script/squarespace side. In fotomoto, check your publish settings. Change the Platform to "None, I have a custom website" and the script library to "None, I'm not using any script or template".

  • Also, if your store isn't setup to automatically move photos into the "For Sale" collection, you may want to check the "not for sale" collection and see if your photos just need to be moved.

  • Derek (Official Rep) July 13, 2016 06:36
    Hi all,

We are happy to announce that we have just released the updated support for Squarespace, and Fotomoto should now work nicely with any of the themes below, using any type of Squarespace gallery (except for the "Carousel" type).

    Adirondack
    Avenue
    Aviator
    Bedford
    Five
    Forte
    Marquee
    Native
    Wells
    Wexley

For updated instructions on how to install Fotomoto, please see How do I install Fotomoto on Squarespace? and if you have any trouble, please send us an email and be sure to include the URL of your website.

Thanks for all of your patience and kind regards,
    Derek
