internet explorer & chrome page request loop

Hi,

The fotomoto script on my page is causing a request loop when I use IE6 or Chrome 5.0.375.70 on WinXP SP3 to browse my site. In the IE status bar it says 'Downloading picture http://www.4am.be/photography/...' but it just keeps pulling the main index page up to a certain point where it breaks off and starts over.

Pages that have the issue:

http://www.4am.be/photography
http://www.4am.be

I am using direct calls to jquery.slimbox and this could be causing the issue. I do not have an issue on http://www.4am.be/gallery and I'm assuming this is because of the slimbox script being implemented in a different way (no direct function calls to jquery.slimbox).

Browsing any of these pages with Firefox does not cause any trouble.

I can provide you with a full wireshark capture file if needed.

Thanks,

Tim

    Hi Tim,

While we'll look at this, please note that IE6 is not officially supported by our widget (and a lot of other services and companies!). It's really time to get rid of that piece of... software! It's slowing down the whole internet. Fortunately our data shows less than 1% of users are using IE6.

    Thank you,

    --Ahmad

  • Hi Ahmad,

Thanks for the quick reply. Wasn't aware IE6 is unsupported and I'm ok with that. I do get the same kind of behaviour with the latest version of Chrome though, so it's likely something browser independent.

I'm guessing it has something to do with the way I'm using slimbox. On the pages where I have this issue, I'm doing a javascript function call to jquery.slimbox directly with the image location as a parameter. On the page where I don't have a problem, I'm using simple tags and ahve slimbox parse those.

    Thanks,

    Tim

  • Hi Tim,

Great looking site, I was wondering if you could try something for me.
I was looking here: view-source:http://www.4am.be/photography/ and noticed that the script was not in the usual place, would you mind moving it before the </body> tag?

Let me know it that fixes things, the gallery (view-source:http://www.4am.be/gallery/) which is working does have the script before the </body> tag, which is encouraging.

    Cheers,

  • Hi Piam,

Thanks for the suggestion. I've put the script before the body tag, but the issue is still there.

I did some further analysis myself and found out that the issue is caused by some incompatibility between the slimbox2.js script file and the fotomoto script file. If I remove either of these, the issue goes away as well.

The strange thing is that my gallery.php page also uses the same slimbox2.js file and this page does not have the issue... So there is a third factor involved as well. I'll do a bit more digging tomorrow and let you know if I find anything useful.

Any suggestions you may think of are welcome.

    Thanks,

    Tim

  • Hey Tim,

I still see the script outside of the closing body tag on your photo page.
Did you move it back because it wasn't the issue?

Just to show I'm not crazy I included a screen cap :P

  • Hi Piam,

I was testing with the main page index file only and hadn't uploaded the modified /photography/index.php yet.

Good news though: today I no longer have a problem. I noticed that the fotomoto-min.js file and fotomoto-slimbox2.js file last modified dates have changed, so I guess someone at Fotomoto uploaded a new version yesterday evening which solves my issue. Not sure if it's related to my specific problem, but thanks for your help. Much appreciated!
