Digital Licensing needs industry pricing - It's useless in current state.

In it's current state someone would pay me "x" amount to use my image as a 1/4 page print in a small local newspaper. And yet the editor of NewsWeek magazine using my image for their cover would pay me the same "x" amount. That is absurd.

Liceses must have basis on Image Size, Medium Used, Length of Use, Distribution (number of readers, subscribers, etc) and Geography (local use, national use, world use).

At the very least the "contact" form (the option for negotiation instead of a set price) should have the above information included so that I can actually give a meaningful quote to the customer. But "contacting" is going to drive away most potential buyers. An editor in a hurry has no time for writing back and forth trying to negotiate prices. He will want to purchase it on the spot or move onto the next site that has a proper distribution method.

I would recommend doing what PhotoShelter does which is an integration of "Cradoc FotoQuote" software into the cart. (http://cradocfotosoftware.com/fotoQuo.... Industry standards for any possible licensing use.

Then we sellers just type in a % of "standard" into our dashboard, just like we already do a % of base costs for print sales.

On a related topic:

- The actual sizes of images MUST be shown in the cart.
How big is "screen"? How big is the "original"? (that can be pulled right off the meta tags).
- and we need a "web use" option as well. In other words a small (maybe 600px) size for purchase by web designers and bloggers etc who only need it for web use. The "screen" option is too large and can be used by printers for any small product uses.

    Hi Gene,

Your comments are duly noted and we realize that there is room for improvement to our very basic licensing feature. Your suggestions are most appreciated, and we do hope that other sellers will add their feedback as well - this really helps us when designing new features.

Given how you want to be able to license your images, my suggestion for now is to select 'License' as your download type, then enable the 'contact me' option at least for 'Commercial use, original size'. This way you'll be able to collect information about the intended use, set a one-off price for each use, make use of our Cart to process the transaction, and use our system to document the transaction and deliver the file to your client. Note the licensing terms can be discussed and agreed upon between you and your clients within the 'licensing conversation' that is saved in our system.

I think you're aware of the above already, but I wanted to post this solution again here for anyone else reading.

Thanks again for your feedback and kind regards,
    Derek

Yes, that is what I have set up already. But as noted above, most editors are not going to go through that process (unless you have real clout or something very original) as they have deadlines to worry about. And it simply leaves too much time for any customer to find what they wanted elsewhere.

In addition the current form for contacting us does not include any reference to image size (1/8, 1/4, 1/2, full page), length of time and distribution. These are the three most important pieces of information. Far more important than what you have in there now (ie: Category and Industry, which have almost no bearing on actual price). The form issue could be fixed today. Just add a couple more drop down menus with the sizes and some industry standard distribution ranges.

I'd like to second this request. I recently had an experience where an image of mine was bought for the front cover of a magazine at a price that I would find more fitting for page 31, bottom corner. While happy to have the custom and for a new client to be spreading the word about me (as she said she would be doing), I felt a bit gutted at the money made (or, perhaps, lost).

If Cradoc FotoQuote can indeed be integrated with your system, that seems like an easy answer. I'm sure it would be worth the cost. It was one of the things I thought about when choosing between yourselves and Photoshelter. Now I feel it's a bigger deal than I'd originally anticipated; I can see that many photographers could choose your rivals when they realise things like this.

What Gene says about the inadequacy of the contact option is spot on. If I hadn't been online at the very moment my client contacted me (which she did because the Fotomoto interface wasn't loading properly), I'd have lost the sale entirely because she made it clear that she needed to finalise the cover that day itself (which was a Sunday, in fact). Most buyers don't have the time or inclination to mail back and forth. The other reason that this is a sub-optimal solution is that if one sets a maximum price for an issue with the option to contact the photographer, the fact that it's high (with covers and full-page features in mind) will put off many who want something much smaller and less prominent. They won't wait around to see whether there's the option of a significant discount, I'm quite certain.

Finally, the other point that Gene made - about showing the size of the image - is also an important one. In fact, the same customer had to ask me for the size of the image I mentioned. Again, she could have simply moved on to the next site rather than waiting for me to let her know.

Hopeful you'll get onto these things!

Total agree!!! Dear Fotomoto, do you have plans anytime soon to take care of the issues above? It's crucial on my decision to use Fotomoto over Photoshelter or the other way around.

    Thanks for a quick reply.

    • I'm really sorry to hear that this is the case. I have been wonderfully well looked after by Fotomoto, specifically you Derek, but this is a matter of the bread and butter of us photographers. The 'contact photographer' option simply doesn't work in this fast-moving world for the reasons I explained. People just want to buy and go, and if they can't then they move on to the next seller. I know one Fotomoto user who uses this system and he's never has a SINGLE enquiry! I felt such a sense of loss when one of my best photos went on the cover of a journal for a mere $100 ($85 to me), which is a crazy price for a front cover, albeit ok for a 1/4 page picture inside the publication somewhere. If I didn't feel it would be a massive hassle to move 1,000 photos across to a PhotoShelter site, I'd be thinking of jumping ship, I'm afraid. And I may still need to think of doing so.

What is the reason that Cradoc FotoQuote can't be incorporated into your system?

      Robin
    • Hi Robin,

Thank you for the kind words about the service you've received here - I do appreciate that.

Regarding Cradoc FotoQuote, I don't think we've ever said that it *can't* be incorporated in to Fotomoto. The truth is that it hasn't been integrated, nor have any changes yet been made to our licensing interface.

I think I must have explained this somewhere, but I'll do it again quickly. It's a matter of priority. We're a small team here, and we have a *very* long list of things that we would love to do, but we have to accomplish new features as our resources allow, focusing on the highest priority/strategic items first. I won't get in to a debate here about why licensing interface changes are a lower priority than, say, a European print partner, but suffice it to say that licensing changes are 'still on the list'.

I appreciate all the passion and interest in this thread, and I completely understand how this would be a great thing for some of our sellers (myself included), but for now we still don't have an ETA on when changes will be made.

If this means you need to leave Fotomoto because you're not able to sell licenses the way you want to with our service, then of course we don't like to see you go, but we do understand that business is business.

Otherwise, subscribe to receive updates from this thread and we'll keep you posted.

Thanks again for everyone and as always, kind regards,
      Derek

  • I would also like to see more sophisticated licensing options, though what you currently offer is nice and simple for many photographers and in particular, for clip artists/illustrators.

One of the simplest and useful changes you could make would be to offer avatar sizes and web sizes. the two current sizes are very limiting and the display size is just a little odd.

You may want to look into the PLUS licensing system, which, I believe, offers a Rights Managed licensing calculator, or the basis for one.

  • Seems odd that it is so hard to add a couple of custom fields to to the licensing area, (length of time, distribution & size) even for a small team.

Anyways, the print options at FotoMoto I'm fine with it really has more to do with the image rights as I want to have my own stock photography on my web site as automated as possible.

So while what FotoMoto offers for free is nice, if it doesn't do what i need I may (most likely) look for something to fill this need. The big question? Will the new option also take my print business?
