Please support ".photo" and other newer domains

Posted on behalf of a potential new seller:

Please add support for ".photo" and other new domains. Currently the new account registration process will not allow me to register for my site with a .photo domain

      Hi SarahJoy,

I'm sorry but I can't provide an ETA on when that might happen yet, but I'll definitely post updates in this thread as I have more information.

What I would suggest for now is using Fotomoto on one of the older domains like ".com", ".org" or ".net". If your main website uses something else, one option would be to create a "store" page where Fotomoto is installed, and link to the store from your main page.

I hope that helps and kind regards,
      Derek
    • Hey guys, I have found a simple workaround.

Sign up to FOTOMOTO using a valid .com or similar domain.

(This is assuming you have another website that has a more typical url.)

Once you have signed up, go to settings and add your new (not compatible) url to the site address as a second site.

I signed up with my .com email and domain

and added my .online as a second website.

      Seems to be working.

    Hi Don and all,

Just as an update, we're aware of the increasing demand to support these new domain extensions and our management is aware of the feature request.

At this time I still can't promise an ETA on when we will be supporting the new extensions, and in the meantime we suggest installing Fotomoto on a .com domain, and redirecting requests to the .com site from the site with the new domain extension. Also, some of our sellers have addressed this issue by creating a "store" page on a .com domain that is linked to from the .photo site. Lastly, it is possible to register a .com address, then add the .photo or other domain as an alternate site address. Please just keep in mind in all cases that your Primary Site Address (from the Settings page of your Dashboard) will show in some places including email receipts, share links, etc.

If we can assist with any other suggestions in the meantime, feel free to email us.

I will post updates on any developments as they are available.

    Thanks again and kind regards,
    Derek

Thanks for the update. I totally understand the non-technical reasons why this is still not done. Hoping for an update soon.

Unfortunately I can't add a .com domain so I'll keep waiting.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Please add .photograpy TLD.

As excited as I was to discover fotomoto and its ease and features, I was equally disappointed to find out that the .photography TLD is not supported. Since all my marketing materials already has our website address on it, changing domain names to work with fotomoto is not an option.

It seems a simple line of yes/no logic added to your code to allow this TLD, as well as .photo would not be a lot of coding effort on your part, and it would help those of us wanting to use your system stay at the forefront of our marketing efforts with these extremely appropriate TLDs.

I can understand why you don't want to include every TLD imaginable, but come on guys. FOTO is even in your own name, albeit misspelled. Will you please allow the use of this domain name and save me the time of googling for an alternative to your great system?

    Thanks for your reply, Derek.

"...We fully understand the importance of support for .photography domains and while the development required is not simple, it is certainly doable. FYI this is one of the highest-priority development projects for us going forward, I just can't offer an ETA on when it will be done, but you will receive an update to the thread when it happens..."

Your considering it a top priority is encouraging, as fotomoto seem to be the only game in town at this time (which is really saying something on the Internet!). After hours of searching for an alternative, I could find none. Hope your developers are as excited to complete this inclusion as I am to use it.

    Hello -

Any eta on this? I finally found two alternatives to fotomoto for my .photography site. Knowing an approximate date will let me decide whether to go ahead with one of them, or to wait for your developers to modify the code to allow this domain.

I'd prefer fotomoto, but don't have the time to wait months for this, nor would it make sense for me to setup one of the alternatives as a temporary fix. I have to make a decision one way or the other and stick with it. Busy season is looming, and I will be too busy taking photos to worry about the site.

    Fingers crossed,
    bw
    • Hi Bill,

Thanks for your post. I can't provide an ETA at this point, and it isn't likely to be within the next month, so the best I can offer is to use Fotomoto if it works for you as-is.

As mentioned above, this is a high priority fix for us, but we have limited engineering resources and there are a few higher priorities being worked on right now.

I hope the update helps and kind regards,
      Derek

    Hello Derek -

Fotomoto neither supports .photography, nor has a timeline to do so. As a result, other solutions aren't competing, since they provide a service that fotomoto does not. I understand and respect your forum rules, so I can't really say much more than that. Is there a way for me to private message either you or Sarah with the info? I actually think you will be fine with what I've found.

Well I have waited patiently to see the official fotomoto response here and I have to say I am very disappointed that you have completely ignored Mr. Williams very gracious and appropriate request. I am also very disappointed and offended at your very transparent slap of my hand regarding looking for other options since you are "working as hard as you can" without deadline or consideration to any of our businesses. This is substandard and is souring me toward you. I hope it is doing the same for others as well. A photo or photography site IS YOUR WHEELHOUSE as you are a photographer support system and this just seems a little to cheesy and disorganized. I feel that Mr. Williams and I ought to be able to discuss this due to the simple fact that anything he has found does not compete with you. I would appreciate you connecting us off your forum so that we can conduct business elsewhere as we are obviously not of value to you.
    Thank you,

The fotomoto company creates it's business through photographer and designers websites, yet is failing to support websites with .photo .photography .gallery .camera etc I find this astonishing and I am really confused to say the least. I wish I found this information out beforehand as it would have changed a lot of decisions for us. For example we went with Pixpa as it supported fotomoto. Never did we imagine this as I was thinking the same as SarahJoy above being your wheelhouse. The .photo TLD was now launched a year ago this month. It looks like we will have to research something alternative which is such a shame as this was our favourite option.

My lease on the .photography was ending in a few months so all I did was create a very similar domain under a .com and in roughly 10 minutes my problem was solved. I was happy to eat a few months on my .photog lease because services like this are now available to me.

Fotomoto is a great service and honestly.. To those saying it should have been done.. Perhaps you should try to write the javascript to run it and sell it to them and you'll be raking in the money if you think it's real simple. From a business perspective, why would Fotomoto run out and waste development money on these domains when each one is unique and there are so many popping up now.. Writing JS for new domains isn't just changing the ending to a few strands! These domains are fads, IMO. Besides.. 9/10 people didn't understand when I said my site was xyz.photography. They would ask oh okay so it's xyz.photography.com? Nope. I wouldn't be surprised if it's years from now that a company like Fotomoto decides it's worth R&D on it IF these domains gain any real traction.

Do you people go into stores that don't sell exactly what you want and tell them it's ridiculous and they should make it right away? Lol because that's exactly what you're doing here by getting upset at FM. Lastly, since they're really the only ones doing this there is even LESS motivation for them to gamble $ on it!

This response sounds really canned. Why would photographers write JS? Furthermore why would someone who is not invested in seeing this change happen respond here or even be on this thread? And why is it a reprimanding voice that is trying to tell us to "eat it" on our leases and waste our own money, asking us how dare we even ask for a timeline of change at a company or ask about different services? (When people go to stores and they don't have what you want, most people go to a different store and/or do research on line to find other options. We have that right as consumers to spend our dollars as we choose.) This just seems really inappropriate and the wording suggests that it may be a fake post. fotomoto can you please respond. I've been really patient and even tolerated having my hand slapped by you which I don't feel I deserved. I have meant you no disrespect along the way and felt the value of your service. But I am really not liking the way I, or the other members of this community are being treated here.

  • Hi all,

Please see my official response at the top of the thread for the latest on this feature request.

For those who are wanting to use Fotomoto and can't yet, we appreciate your feedback and all of the activity on this post has had the effect of making it a higher company priority to support the new domain extensions, but it may still be a while before this happens. To Mike's point, supporting the new domains is not a "simple" project, as the domain of a website is handled in many lines of our code and it's a fairly large project to make the needed changes. Still we are aware of the demand and are planning to address it as one of our top priorities.

As mentioned, there is a workaround to this, simplest being to have your site at yoursite.photo for example, then linking to an external "print store" somewhere at a .com or other supported domain.

Last, I hope that we can keep the tone of the thread civilized, and if you don't have a comment to add that hasn't been addressed already, please just give the thread a +1 if you're wanting us to support the new domain extensions.

    Thank you and kind regards,
    Derek

  • This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled cnt sight up because FOTOMOTO does not recognize the new DOT domains as valid.

i recently wanted to sign up for fotomoto as i am looking for a new self hosted ecommerce solution, but when i went to sign up i was blocked because the website said my email and website were not valid.

there is a new DOT PHOTOGRAPHY domain and i would have thought by now places like fotomoto would have been the first to fix their site to accommodate this.

so i cant sign up because i cant register my email or website since my domain is invalid to fotomoto.....any advice?

However I originally signed up for fotomoto for my main .com website, and since have decided to remove the fine art section so as to make it purely my commercial work. I then added my new .photo domain, and everything appears to be working for me....

      Hi Max,

I took a look and all seems to be working nicely. I haven't completed an order yet, but I don't have any reason to suspect it won't work as expected.

The only potential drawback I can see here is that your Primary Site Address will be shown on invoices, emails, and any sharing links you might distribute via Fotomoto, so everything would say "maxkalkman.com" instead of soco.photo. If this isn't a big concern then you should be all set!

I hope that helps and kind regards,
      Derek
    • Hi Derek,
Thank you very much for testing it. Im very excited now. Based on what you said about invoices Im slightly changing a few instances to now say SoCo.Photo By Max Kalkman Photography, which considering all this means I get to use the .photo domain I see as a more than acceptable workaround.
      Thanks,
      Max

  • I’m frustrated
The lack of customer friendly responses from Fotomoto really screams "go the F away you people who want to use valid domains that are not .com -- you are too advanced for us and we don't want your kind here".

I very well *could* use a .com -- that is not the point. The point is it is a very minor coding change to allow any URL (I have 15+ years as an internet application developer under my belt, I know what I'm talking about), but your refusal to fix it in a timely manner (more than a month is not a timely manner and it's over a year) gives a VERY bad opinion to anyone looking for that very simple functionality.

  • There was never a time when the code running the root domains on Internet systems was restricted to a list or very short string length... by the basic algorithms anyway. It's true they started with just a few 3 letter public roots in the registrars (plus a few longer roots for private testing purposes), but that never meant anyone else is suppose to somehow check their own personal list (inside mail, web, etc. applications) of root domains for validity. This is the cart driving the horse. Please Fotomoto, don't be "one of those" internet applications that tries to play god concerning what are valid domain names on the Internet. The root servers are the sole arbiter of what root domains are valid on the Internet. The fact Fotomoto (and others) restrict any root domains means your application is not compatible, by definition, with the Internet. To say this coding approach is concerning is an understatement.

It seems obvious the programming talent behind Fotomoto is solid. It appears someone laid down an errant requirement to determine root domain validity without referencing the root domain authorities. I look forward with great anticipation the day I can try out Fotomoto on my .photography domain.

It's been quite a number of years since we've past the 3 letter root domain length.

  • Well, it's been a very, very long time, more than a year for sure, since this request was first posted. There appears to be no progress at all. I have to assume Fotomoto is just not going to offer other domains, period. That is your right of course, but maybe you should just say that so everyone stops hoping for it. Just saying....

      Hi humeston,

It has been a long time indeed, but we still plan to support the "newer" domains in the future.

I probably mentioned this above, but we don't have a huge engineering team here at Fotomoto and there are a lot of high-priority things for them to work on. Supporting the newer domains remains a very high priority for us, but we've got a few higher priority things to accomplish before we will get to this.

In the meantime, hopefully the workaround posted above might help, but if not, stay subscribed to this post and we'll definitely be updating it once we have made the changes needed to support the new domains.

Thanks for posting and kind regards,
      Derek
