Printless in Europe - No More!

We are happy to announce our first print lab partnership in Europe:

  • you still need to get it sorted! the price to ship to the Uk is £13:49 ridiculous!! when all i do is change to shipping to the USA from the same site and guess what? £10:49!!

    Surely this cannot be correct?

    • If I order a 12"x18" premium print to the UK it costs £9.59. There is no way to ship the same thing to the UK from us, so I'm not sure I understand your price comparison. If I make the same order to within the US the price ranges from £5.75-£15.99 depending on the shipping method.

The Price of shipping within The US is still cheaper than the Price of Shipping within the EU. That is due to many reasons, including A 19% VAT that the EU charges on all shipping costs. However the advantage of shipping in the EU means that orders will arrive much, much sooner.

While we do agree that EU shipping prices are higher, and we are negotiating them with White Wall, I'm afraid that these are our prices. If we negotiate a better deal we will make the announcement on our blog.

Until then, these shipping prices stand.

      Kind regards,
      Piam
    • Well at the moment a 12x18 for me to order and delivery to the UK is £9:99 that's a 40 pence difference is it not? Explain this one please

  • I haven't checked this out yet. However, I recently pushed a print through Whitewall by way of a test. 20x14" Kodak Lightjet, print cost £9.00, shipping £5.99. Let's see what happens when I run it through Fotomoto, shall we?

    • Thank you for letting us know about your experience with White Wall.
However one data point is not enough to judge all of White Walls services by.
If anyone else has had similar experiences then I would be happy to hear about it aswell.

However, I would prefer to hear about something like that in it's own post. By posting that here you confused the issue, and made it look like WE had lost your order, when in fact you had never placed an order through Fotomoto, but rather you made a separate order through White Wall on your own that you where unhappy with.

      Kind regards,
      Piam
    • I made it very clear right at the start and at least once later that the order was directly through Whitewall. In no way did I imply that Fotomoto were responsible, quite the reverse, in fact. Please read the thread properly.

It seemed reasonable to post here since it was a discussion about print delivery in Europe.

This may be only one sample however, leaving the issue of damaged print aside, they *always* take 5 days to dispatch, delivery following dispatch will *always* be 3 further days. 8 days to deliver a print is unacceptable. Further, they *never* answer their support phone and they *always* take at least 24 hours to respond to email. This is all on their web site if you look.

I'm done with this now, I've get better things to do than trying to get a service I'm never going to use again to understand that they've made some lousy decisions and picked a bloody awful partner.

  • Through Fotomoto, 18x12" or 16x24", shipping £10.49, direct from Whitewall £5.99.

    What's going on here?

  • Print cost direct from Whitewall, 20x16, £9. Fotomoto, my selling price £89.24, my profit £38.33. Fotomoto appear to be charging me £50.91 for a print that I can get for £9.00 from Whitewall and tapping my customers an extra fiver for delivery, am I correct?

John, can you be more specific about the type and size of the product? We are passing the exact shipping cost we get from WhiteWall and not adding anything to it. I will send this to WhiteWall and ask them to post more info about shipping here.

    • "WhiteWall folks are working on it trying to see how they can lower the shipping costs"
But why would their shipping costs thorough Fotomoto be nearly double their own shipping costs?
    • 11 days ago and several comments later and STILL!! NO!! input form you folk. Is this the way forward with customer service? IGNORE and they will go elsewhere?

  • Firstly this is my second bite into FM now the UK print supplier has been setup. As usual FM interface is slick and nicely done, however I have reservations about shipping.

I analysed shipping costs for three products at three sizes against the default FM pricing and what was quoted for shipping.

    Premium Prints
4x6": Flat pack, 4 days £3.49 (70% added to charged print cost for shipping), Tube 4d £6.49 (130%)
    8x10": £6.49 tube 4d, (13%)
    16x20": £9.99 tube 12d (4%)
    20x30":£12.99 tube 4d (4%)

    FineArt
    10x8": £12.99 flat 12d (33%), £15.99 flat 10d (41%), £12.99 tube 12d, £15.99 tube 4d
    16x20" £31.00 flat 12d (35%), £38.49 flat 7d (43%), £14.99 tube 12d(16%), £19.49 tube 7d (21% )
    20x30" £54.49 flat 12d (48%), £63.99 flat 7d (56%), £14.99 tube 12d (13%), £19.49 tube 7d (17%)

    Canvas prints (all flat packaging)
    8x10" £26.99 12d (22%), £31.99 7d (26%)
    16X20" £26.99 12d (14%), 31.99 7d (16%)
    20x30" £51.49 12d, (17%), £54.49 7d (19%)

    Observations:
    1. Premium prints at 4x6 have four ship options flat & tube at two speeds whereas 8x10, 16x20 and 20x30 have only one option listed, via tube and at mixed speeds, seems odd.
    2. Fine Art prints packaging prices appear excessive, how much more should a fine art print packaging cost in a tube (or flat) above that for a Premium Print. Not 300% more!?
    3. None of the price points are sensitive to multiples, so if I sell one 20x30" canvas shipping is £54.49 or $54.49 for 100 qty.

In general I feel you need to be more transparent about what is being charged, either on whitewall's site or FM. I will be responsible to my Clients for the whole product (including shipping) and I have no idea what shipping charges are unless I spend 1-2 hours doing this exercise which I would rather not do. c'mon guys, i'm being patient, but I have not even got to ordering product yet. Never surprise your Clients.

    • Hi Piam,

I understand what you say and some things may be outwith your control, like VAT. Your quoting USPS, i never could tell which courrier FM options mapped to.
From my perspective, I had no way of knowing what MY Customers may be charged in total unless I trawl FM ordering every combination. That took me a few hours to do and write down (above). You must be more transparent in your service. WW must provide you with a list of the P&P charges across every combination and publish it. Otherwise I have no clue what my customers would be charged - unacceptable to me. Also as i said there are other observations needing ironed out.

Appreciate FM efforts, but alas i've chosen my path.

  • Hello,

Not sure if this is the right thread but it seems relevant ...

I'm in the UK and wanted to try out fotomoto as, from the technical viewpoint, it seems like a great solution. So I have plugged it into my site and raised a test order. As others have said I was surprised when a test order for 9GBP of goods came to 18.60GBP when shipping (8.60GBP) was included. However I placed the test order to see what the prints are like.

That was a day ago. Today I read the news about the German company and tried raising another test order. This time the shipping had dropped to 3GBP.

    Two questions:-
    (1) Does this mean European orders are being fulfilled in Germany already?
    (2) If my test order is being processed in the States, can I be sure that Germany will produce a similar quality?

    • Great news, Derek!

I now have one of the prints so delivery time was great - and it did come from Germany. The only question that leaves is why was the delivery price so high on the order I placed? I didn't place the second order I mentioned so I know this print came from the first order with the expensive delivery price.

By the way, the print is darker than expected but I have read on another thread that that is due to my screen being backlit ... hmmmm another thing to suss out a solution for.

Finally, any plans on allowing other products to be printed in Europe for European customers?
    • Hi Gavin,

If you think there is an error in the price of shipping currently being charged, please do let us know, but first please read the responses from Ahmad and Piam above.

As for plans to produce and ship other (non Premium print) products from WhiteWall, yes, that is in the works but I don't have an estimate on when we'll be moving forward with that.

      Kind regards,
      Derek

Yet in your announcement's you say " We are happy to announce our first print lab partnership in Europe ". The customer clearly says in the address United Kingdom!

She better not be charged Customs

  • I’m frustrated
Like other potentional customers who wrote on this post months ago Ive spend the last week setting up my website with FM and testing, Everything was going great until I tried my first test order and I was shocked to see the price of £9.99 for
delivery on a print I would be charging £20 for. With a UK based print shop which
has vat rated at 20% I get the same size/weight print delivered for £3.50
So despite what it says in the posts from FM is not the VAT which is to blame
    for the excessive markup.
Whilst FM ticks all the boxes apart from Paypal I am delaying my decision to port to FM and actively researching other avenues.

  • On my test order I was charged £6.49 delivery for an 8 x 12 print. That's 65% of the cost of the print

If I setup an order on Whitewall for the same image, printed at 30 x 20 cm as a UV art print with 6-colour process, the print cost is €5.98 and the delivery €4.98 inc VAT. Roughly converted those prices are £5.14 and £4.28

Edit: Whitewall delivery charges to the UK are different. Delivery for all prints costs £5.99 - so Fotomoto costs 50p more. I can live with that

I pointed out the high delivery costs a couple of months ago but have seen no feedback other than "It is being looked into" or "the delivery costs are what they are"

The difference in delivery costs may be explained by it being a different service - but we wouldn't know that as it is not made explicit

Perhaps Fotomoto should examine this issue, and that of VAT, in more detail. Business users (end users or companies running Fotomoto as a business) are used to reclaiming VAT and the Fotomoto setup does not allow that as VAT is not itemised on the invoice

  • It's quite simple to open a Whitewall gallery and direct print requests there for your print sales - I was thinking of doing this, say for just the prints I think are good enough from my blog to warrant a 'gallery' :0) Maybe Fotomoto get a markup on their Whitewall service, although I doubt it as then why would they advertise who they are using for the EU print fulfilment? I think it is more likely Whitewall clawing back some of their lost profit because they do Fotomoto such a good deal?

We're still printless in Europe if we talk about Canvas.

The shipment cost is too high. Nobody outside US will buy a Canvas.

  • Hi Sergio,

I posted this in another thread to respond to your question, but I wanted to let everyone on this thread know too - you now have the option of fulfilling your own prints yourself or via a 3rd-party lab. This really helps for anyone in your situation looking to save on shipping!

For more on the new options, please see our Print fulfillment options article.

I hope that helps and kind regards,
    Derek
