Simplified image identification

Hello,

I don't really know how to put my problem into a fitting title/subject so please let me explain:

It appears that Fotomoto identifies each image by it's ENTIRE web address (URL). In my case, this leads to quite some duplicates as I'm using Blogger as my platform and the Picasa Web Albums API to populate albums directly in Blogger pages.

This is what it looks like: http://www.alex-kunz.com

Source 1 for duplicates: Blogger and Picasa Web Albums have a SIZE parameter right in the URL. I'm using it to show an image no more than 800 pixels wide in my blogposts (.../s800/... parameter in the URL), and when the image is clicked, an image no more than 1024 pixels on the long side in a Lightbox (.../s1024/... parameter in the URL).

Source 2 for duplicates: the Picasa Web Albums API does not always return the same image URL for the photo. My guess would be that it is some sort of a load balancing mechanism. The image is always the same, but the URL changes from lh3.googleusercontent.com to lh6.googleusercontent.com and so on.

Needless to say, finding these duplicates is a pain in the brain. I do have to find all instances of an image to put them into the correct collection because some of them are available for licensing on Getty - which means I cannot offer download licenses through Fotomoto (and must put them into a different collection where downloads are disabled).

It would help me tremendously if there was a way to...

a) sort the entire image list by FILENAME to begin with

and/or

b) allow an optional "simplified image identification" not by the entire URL, but by it's filename only (my filenames are unique).

I would appreciate any help/thoughts on that problem.

Thanks
Alexander.

  • Hi Alexander,

Thanks for the explanation and I completely understand your point/issue here.

Our system does consider any image with a distinct URL to be unique, so if you have the same image coming from different URLs, this will cause duplicates to appear on the Images page in the Dashboard - this is by design.

In many use cases, this design is more of a 'feature' than an 'issue', because it allows you to have individual control over how each occurrence of the image is sold, though the drawback is the manual effort of moving each image to a collection.

My best recommendation would be to have one distinct source for any image if at all possible - this is something of a best-practice on the web, and is likely to serve you in this case and beyond.

If that's not possible, another approach would be only sell the image from one place - perhaps from your 'image detail' page, like at http://www.alex-kunz.com/2011/09/emer.... You could link all of your various thumbnails to that detail page, and only have Fotomoto enabled there. If needed, see this article about how to exclude images from being sold.

Other than that, the best I can offer you at this point is to let you know that we are working on a new feature (release TBD) that will allow you to route images to a defined Collection based on the URL and image file metadata. While this won't solve your multiple location issue, it will reduce the effort needed to put images into Collections.

Last, I'd encourage you to add a new 'Idea' post here, requesting a way to sort images on the Image page by filename - this is something that I could see being useful to many sellers in the Fotomoto Community.

Hopefully this extra-large response was helpful, and as always we appreciate your continued support.

    Kind regards,
    Derek

  • Hello Derek, thanks for the XL respone. :) I understand that the URL being the unique identifier is useful in the majority of cases. I submitted the idea to sort images by filename here: http://getsatisfaction.com/fotomoto/t...
