I’m frustrated

Bad request every time

Suddenly, Xmarks can't sync anything. "Bad request." I tried deleting local and forcing download and I tried forcing upload, both of which work, but it still gets a bad request the next time I change anything. I even tried restoring to an old version from before any errors, but it still happens.

The log shows this error:

    To fix this, I had to restore an older bookmark set, then force a download to the clients that were having this issue.

  • I had that sync problem as well (and have to say that problems with xmarks are very more often for the last few weeks).
    I managed to solve it by forced upload without backing up or restoring.

    Not much - but perhaps worth to be collected.

  • I have this problem too. It occurred couple hours ago. Forcing upload does not work for me. No I have three sets of bookmarks - one on the server, one in notebook, one in pc. I dont care about the server set, but I need to sync notebook and pc set. I cannot upload notebook nor pc set.

  • Strange thing. I cannot force uploading of any bookmark set, including:
    - default Firefox bookmark set in new firefox profile
    - empty bookmark set
    - server bookmark set with some new bookmarks

    The only thing I can force upload is current server bookmark set. But I guess thats because no synchronization is performed in that case.

  • Another strange thing. Xmarks can add new bookmarks, but cant delete any of synced bookmarks, it includes moving bookmarks.

    Is xmarks server read-only? You got hacked or something :D

    Ok, I *may* have fixed mine, though I can't be sure til it works for longer than this.
    My steps - all of which I tried before separately, but this time I did them all at once:

    1. Uninstall Xmarks
    2. Delete all bookmarks; delete bookmarks file in Firefox profile folder
    3. Delete all remaining Xmarks files from Firefox profile folder
    4. Reopen Firefox, import bookmarks from before the error from a .json
    5. Reinstall Xmarks
    6. Rerun setup wizard
    7. Choose to force upload during the wizard

    So far, I can add, move and delete marks and it still syncs. So, maybe I did it?

    Update: still working fine. Try this out if nothing else works for you. You can find old json backups in Firefox's profile folder.

  • The initial solution posted by ckopca worked for me, thanks you! Once I restored back to 2 days ago on the xmarks.com site, then forced a download of the server data to each of my PC's they started syncing fine.

    Just make sure you don't accidentally sync with any of the PC's prior to downloading the new server set, that could put the error right back.

    I've got the same problem in my palemoon (optimized version of ff) v4 and my two chrome 11 beta profiles.

    i couldn't get any log from chrome because the console is totally blank. (yes, i toggled the developer mode in chrome://extensions and clicked the "background.html" link to inspect xmarks)

    however, i did notice that it either shows an:
    "An error occured"
    or an
    "bookmarks error: Error during compare"

    The only time I got xmarks syncing successfully these days was when I downloaded the bookmarks from the server (in palemoon and chrome) and tried syncing. BUT, when i deleted a single bookmark from each of the browsers and tried syncing again. the error comes back.

    Wow, thanks! I thought that ckopca's suggestion wouldn't be that different from what I tried to do but it did solve the problem, I hope. but it solved my palemoon's xmarks so i've got my fingers crossed for my chrome browsers.

    Never had this kind of problem before and now it keep to come up regularly
    I solve by up<:dow a new set to server but problem reappear after a while a pc or another
    last time I did it, yersteday, I loose ALL my favicon ...

  • I've tried the following before doing the solution posted by ckopca:

    - I followed the link shown by the addon when the error occurred. It suggested to force an upload so that the data/bookmarks in the server can be replaced by the local data/bookmarks
    -> another error popped up; uploading was always unsuccessful from palemoon/ff/chrome

    - I exported my local bookmark set to my pc for backup and then tried the "force download" option. the download was successful, regular syncing worked but a single modification to the browser's bookmark set causes the error to show up again

    - i tried logging in my.xmarks.com to find some option which can let me upload my local bookmark set by using the backup i saved to my pc earlier.
    -> the website only allows an import of bookmarks from delicious

    Xmarks stores several old synchronizations or sets of the bookmarks and restoring and downloading one of them instead of just doing a "force download" fixes the error. I had to log in to my.xmarks.com and go to Tools > Explore and Restore Old Bookmarks to restore an older set. Your browser would then ask you what it should do since it noticed that you restored an older set. Choose "Download" among the three. Don't forget to back up your local bookmark set before you trying anything.

  • I may have found a fairly simple workaround for this problem, at least the variety with an earlier message saying duplicate children position found. First, inspect the list of folders and subfolders for any named Bookmarks Toolbar. Leave the one at the highest level alone, but do whatever seems appropriate for removing all the others from the server BEFORE YOU LET THAT COPY OF FIREFOX SYNCHRONIZE AGAIN. Not clear if you also need to delete them under the Firefox copy showing the problem. Now tell Xmarks for Firefox under the Firefox copy showing the problem to synchronize; it's likely to work this time. I have not checked if renaming all the other folders currently named Bookmarls Toolbar, but keeping them, is adequate.

    Suspect it might apply for additional folders named Bookmarks Menu or Unsorted Bookmarks instead.

    Whenever i try to modify the bookmark set on the server it fails. I can force download to my PC but later any modification on the PC bookmark makes the synchronisation fails.

    I guess that the problem is on server side, that my account has
    corrupted, because when i enter the account, on http://my.xmarks.com/
    if i delete a link, just to test it, fails

    Besides, I also tried to restore an old bookmark set, but it doesn't
    work. It remains the same current set, although it says it restored it.

    Any help?

  • I have that problem too. I entered a thread and am in the process of working it out (currently awaiting my next step). But at a very stable state: (1) my.xmarks.com is not functioning, (2) cannot sync, (3) repair doesn't change anything (ok, well it *says* my sync is successfull but neither the server side nor the client side are changing), (2a) cannot upload. I can download but it is a now antiquated set that I cannot change (see (1)).

    The support staff seem to be tirelessly addressing problems so it may take some time for this to be resolved for me. At this point, if it is indeed a server side issue it sounds like only an account issue and not something more global otherwise the whole lot of us would suffer.

    I may try to create another account and see if I have any success with that. If so, I will just blow my old account away and go on from there.
