Bug report: Xmarks doesn't work with iCloud bookmark sync in Safari for Mac

Bug report: bookmarks added to Safari (version 5.1.4 on Lion 10.7.3) via Xmarks for Safari (version 1.4.1) do not get synced to iCloud.

What I did: I added a bookmark in Firefox, then synced to Xmarks. I then synced my bookmarks with Xmarks for Safari. While they showed up in my Safari bookmarks, they did not show up on any of my other iCloud-connected devices. When I added that same bookmark within Safari, the bookmark showed up on all my other iCloud devices.

I have been able to repeat this behavior consistently.

  • Yes this is a known issue -- we're working on icloud integration. Short story is Safari ignores bookmarks added via SyncServices for iCloud sync unless you modify them in-browser, e.g. by reordering your bookmarks in Safari. SyncServices was the predominant sync API until Apple deprecated it in favor of iCloud. For iCloud integration, one needs to talk directly to iCloud servers instead of to SyncServices.

  • I am using 2 browsers, Firefox and Safari on my Mac and wanted to sync bookmarks. I installed both xmarks for Safari and Firefox. Firefox bookmarks synced with xmarks, but Safari - didn't. None of them, it just shows the Bookmarks Toolbar folder which has synced from Safari. But I have lot's of folders in Safari's "Show All Bookmarks" and none of those folders went to xmarks. I tried to contact xmarks help, but even could not find their contact details on their support! Pls help!

  • I’m frustrated.
I've been having the same problem for many months and it's extremely frustrating. I just figured out today that it was related to Xmarks.

Any idea when this might be fixed? Is it even possible to fix?

  • So here's what I'd suggest. Other posts talk about exporting the Bookmarks from Safari and then setting the iCloud settings to off on all your other devices (iPad, iPod, iPhone, Mac, etc.). Then delete the bookmarks on Safari and turn back on iCloud so that it syncs up nothing.

Then run the import bookmarks in Safari. Also forcibly sync up from Safari to Xmarks to overwrite what is up on the server. Go over to Firefox, specify you want to download and overwrite what's on the PC.

Here's the only catch. If you want to add new bookmarks, you can only do it from Safari based browsers going forward. If you do it thru Firefox - only Firefox and Safari on your PC will have the links but your other devices (iPhone, iPod, iPad) will never see those.

  • Can I suggest a rather simple workaround?

New bookmarks that you create on any iOS device will sync with Safari properly and therefore will propagate across any other browser. Job done. Same if you create them in Safari. No problem.

New bookmarks will not propagate properly to iOS if you create on another desktop browser. But, they will make it as far as Safari on your computer.

So, if you create new bookmarks in a browser other than Safari, then just put them in the bookmarks bar, or in the root directory, or someplace else you can easily find them. Then you can go into Safari and move them to the place you actually want them.

The act of moving the bookmark makes iCloud notice it, and therefore it is then correctly synced with all devices. Not ideal, but really quite easy and good enough until the Xmarks team can fix it properly.
