IE Favorites bar empty after sync

I have been using Xmarks for a several months with no problems. Then today after a synch the favorites in IE8 have become mangled in this way -- the Favorites bar is duplicated, with all my links in one, which does not work as the Favorites bar. The one that works as the Favorites bar is empty.

I tried to delete the empty one with the hope that it would again become the "real" one, but that does not work, and the empty one reappears.

  • Sorry about that! I'm not entirely sure what the root issue was, but the easiest way to get things back to normal is to use our backup and restore feature to get back to a better version of your bookmarks. Details on how to do that are here: http://wiki.foxmarks.com/wiki/Product...

After doing that you should be able to download your Favorites back into IE without any issues.

    Hope this helps,

    • Thank you for your swift response.

I don't think you understand my question. What I am saying is that the updating of IE8 is broken, not my set of bookmarks.

What happens is that the Bookmarks Toolbar items get downloaded into an IE secondary "Favorites Bar", which is just a folder, not the "real" IE Favorites Bar. That real one is now empty, and the other one does not act as a Favorites Bar. So effectively I have lost the Favorites Bar, and gained a Bookmarks folder.

However, taking the lead from your response, I decided to download into IE8 all the bookmarks, replacing existing content. If this would have been successful, my bookmarks would have bein restored and the problem solved.

However, when I tried to do this I got a "Synchronization Error: An error occurred during synchronization."

      So something is definitely wrong.

My next step was to manually delete all the IE8 favorites, and try the download again.

So I tried this, and got an interesting result. In the IE8 "Organize Favorites" I first deleted the empty folder titled "Favorites Bar.' However, the delete confirmation message asked me if I wanted to remove the "Links" folder, which is the old name that IE used to use for this. Then when I deleted the secondary folder called "Favorites Bar" with bookmarks in it, the delete confirmation message asked me if I wanted to delete the "Bookmarks Toolbar". Thus the displayed name of "Favorites Bar" for both is misleading as the actual "internal" names are as described.

In my opinion, this indicates the cause of the problem. There is a mismatch between the internal folder names used by IE8 and by Xmarks, which is causing what I am seeing.

The result after deleting both folders labeled "Favorites Bar" is as follows: - during download, I still get the same error message, there is a new folder this time labeled "Bookmarks Toolbar", IE8 does not recognize that as the "Links" or "Favorites Bar", and the functionality of Xmarks has been lost in this area.

I finally manually recovered by using "Organize Favorites" by creating a folder called "Links" manually moving the contents of the Bookmarks Toolbar into it, and deleting the Bookmarks Toolbar folder.

My conclusion is that Xmarks is not fully compatible with IE8. I don't recall having to ever figure out this manual fixup procedure for IE before. However, I recently switched to using IE8 as the primary IE target for development, and it may be that I was not using Xmarks with IE so much as I don't use it to browse other than validating layout for our websites, so just noticed this issue now.

However, my procedure above does give an effective workaround.

This is an effective workaround when using IE exclusively, but does not work when syncing with firefox, one or the other remains broken.

  • I have the same problem. I believe when I started using IE8. I sync between IE, Firefox (and now) Chrome. What happens to me is similar to others. For some odd reason, another Favorites Bar folder gets created but is empty. This is the Favorites Bar folder that IE recognizes even though in my Favorites folder, there are 3 of the exact name. To fix, I cut-n-paste the bookmarks from the first Favorites Bar folder, paste them in the 2nd one, and then delete the 1st and 3rd Favorites Bar folder. I can't figure out the root cause myself and how IE8 recognizes only the middle Favorites Bar folder out of 3. The only contents of the 2 newly created Favorites Bar is meta.fm file.

I know that before IE8, the favorites bar was called Links. In my Firefox, the links folder is empty so it seems that Favorites Bar maps to Firefox bookmarks toolbar?
