  • I’m confused
So, I would like to turn this, not so well thought out "feature" off.
You say "simply right click..." This is also not well thought out - right click on WHAT?
If you are using a Mac: what does "right click" mean anyway?

e.g. kidding, amused, unsure, silly indifferent, undecided, unconcerned happy, confident, thankful, excited sad, anxious, confused, frustrated

  • The stars show up even though I have disabled every feature that is not related to bookmark and password syncing. Why is this?
I don't want a smarter search, site info, ratings or happyness points or anything else like that. I just want my passwords and bookmarks synced between my three computers.
Am I the only one who wants this?

  • I’m disgusted and disappointed
God, what a stupid idea... You're "excited"??? Don't you know how to leave well enough alone?

I've been using fox/xmarks for years without any real offensive nonsense, but you ruined that.

I don't want stars, I don't want you rating my my sites, I don't want you giving me your view on anything, I want to sync my book marks and you to stay out of my business. The other people I've talked to about it want the same. Is that too much for you to understand?

let's be honest, this isn't even close to a good idea.. :( :(

Please put down the crack pipes, and give us a way to remove this nonsense, completely.......

  • I never understand why _every_ addon and _every_ application always tries to become the center of the universe for the user. XMarks are wanted because they synchronize things. Why not to concentrate on that, which is where is your strength and where is your core? why venturing into socializing business where you have 1,000 competitors and, most importantly, where the users are not expecting anything from you? you think users don't know how to open facebook? this addition is guaranteed to generate nothing but frustration, which is what you actually see in the comments. If you don't know what to work on, ask the users. Was there one of them who said that he is missing this feature in xmarks?

Please remove this option; I agree with most of the people before me.

Keep the focus on bookmark synchronization. I like the KISS principle. Keep it simple, stupid.

  • I never realized it was not Google but Xmarks that put those stars in my search results, until I saw the Xmarks page after an update.
    But it's very helpful!

  • I’m content
I like the idea and I like to see the ranking and click to see what the Top sites are in the XMarks community. I don't find the stars particularly useful however.

On a different angle: What I would love to see and would find even more useful is to have a mark next to each google search result that I myself have already bookmarked.

  • I’m confused
I'm concerned about privacy of my browsing and searches. I don't mind you doing datamining on my bookmarks, but I hate the idea of page ratings and search result augmentation, which obviously submits everything I do to your servers. This functionality ideally has to be a separate plug-in, which I'll just never install.

The fact that it's turned on by default only adds to my paranoia.

If you still want to piggyback this stuff with my bookmarks, please explain clearly and plainly (and not just somewhere in terms of service if you have any), whether any of my information (searches and site visits) gets submitted to you when I disable things on "Discovery" page of your settings.

  • Just replying to say that I appreciate the option to toggle stars off was implemented. Very much so, and thank you. But please note that the decision "...we won't be pushing this version to all users of Xmarks 3.5.7..." seems to have broken the addon update feature for those users.

In other words, you are up to 3.5.11 at the time of this post, and even though the mozilla site has 3.5.10, only new users will get that update. Existing users are stuck on 3.5.7 if relying on firefox addon update features - unless manually installing fresh from Mozilla or here. I'm pretty sure this means that a lot of your users are still running 3.5.7, when several updates apparently have come out since then (not just the stars option, right?).
    • Nope, the update feature is still working as expected, and the only thing 3.5.7 users are missing out on is the ability to disable the stars--there have been no other updates aside from that. When we push out another release with update notification, 3.5.7 users should get upgrade notices as usual.

The numbering can be confusing; if you have an odd-numbered version, it was downloaded from download.xmarks.com, and even-numbered from addons.mozilla.org. We do download.xmarks.com first, so installs from there will always have a lower version number.

Yes, we often consider changing this, but it's what we have for now.

  • So instead of this fishy updates why not make bookmarks private to each profile instead of adding it to all different profiles at work, lab school,...
I remember last time (a few years back) you agreed it is a good idea, just did not have time for implementation!!!!!
