I’m frustrated

synchronizing never completes in Xmarks for Firefox

Foxmarks is synchronizing properly on one of my computers, but on my new computer it is attempting to sync and is running continually, never completing the sync.

Foxmarks never stops syncing on my Vista/Server2008 machine either. It works fine in WinXP and Leopard with both FF2 and FF3. The log includes the lines:

    [2008-10-27 10:07:21] ------ Foxmarks/2.5.3 (/Places) starting sync with sync.foxmarks.com ------
    [2008-10-27 10:07:21] >>> POST http://sync.foxmarks.com/sync/bookmar...
    [2008-10-27 10:07:21] >>> Body is: (disabled)

and after uninstalling and reinstalling Foxmarks all I get is:

    Hi.
Foxmarks syncs fine on my home Windows and Linux computers, but has started failing to sync on my work WinXP computer.
Disabling or Reinstalling foxmarks does not fix the problem.

    Thanks!

Same here. I sync and it never goes through. This has happened for several days now and the last time I was able to sync was October 16 (so right before the last update for Foxmarks). I'm running Firefox 3.0.3 on WinXP. I have tried uninstalling and then reinstalling Foxmarks and nothing changes.

Below are at least 3 entries from my foxmarks log where the sync is not successful. The only thing that I can make out is that there is a problem with the Unsorted Bookmarks folder.

  • Howdy folks -- sorry for the delay in responding. The weekend put me a bit behind.

The behavior you're all describing makes it sound like Foxmarks is crashing on you for some reason. Crashes usually happen during synchronization, and cause the spinning Foxmarks icon to keep going, with nothing more being written to foxmarks.log.

Usually if there's a crash, then the cause will show up in the Error Console; to get information from there, please consult the instructions on this page:

    http://wiki.foxmarks.com/wiki/Foxmark...

Generally, though, the problem is often caused by a corrupted Firefox profile, which can be fixed by creating a new one:

  • Thanks Eric,

It does sound like a crash as you describe it. The spinning icon keeps going.

The error console shows two new errors (below) when attempting to synchronise.

I'll try a new profile next and post the results separately.

  • I’m hopeful
Regarding a corrupt profile... I wasn't having any other problems with Firefox, but I figured, it wouldn't hurt to start fresh. I simply deleted the Mozilla directories in my Windows profile so that I would get the defaults when I started Firefox.

After installing some Add-ons - including Foxmarks - and restarting, the Foxmarks setup wizard asks me to login, and then is stuck with the activity indicator on a blank window. If I click on the (spinning) Foxmarks icon in the status bar, it looks just as it did before creating a new profile (i.e. stuck on "Synchronizing") The difference is that the last sync is "never". The Log file has:

    [2008-10-31 10:12:00] ------ Foxmarks/2.5.3 (/Places) starting status with sync.foxmarks.com ------
    [2008-10-31 10:12:00] Entered Status...
    [2008-10-31 10:12:00] >>> GET http://sync.foxmarks.com/sync/bookmar...

When I click on the "Synchronize Now" button, the log adds:

    [2008-10-31 10:51:13] Warning: removeObserver failed.

Firefox's error console is not recording anything related to Foxmarks, but it is functional as other sites (like this one) have entries.

Just FYI, I'm trying to run this on Server 2008 x64. and now I have no bookmarks.

  • I’m disgusted
I am running WinXP, SP3, Firefox 3.0.3, and I include passwords in my Foxmarks synchronization.

Creating a new profile is a serious pain. I might try it.

However, this problem began when I decided to add passwords to my Foxmarks synchronization and I found it necessary to cancel synchronization because it was taking too long. I blame Foxmarks for causing me problems because it has done it a number of times in the past. I will, however, give it the benefit of the doubt until I know for sure that Foxmarks is the source of my discomfort.

Okay. I turned off Password Synchronization and ran Foxmarks Synchronize Now. Success! Not a problem.

The problem lies in attempting to synchronize passwords.

Since I truly would like to synchronize passwords for at least two computers on our network, I really would like this to work. So, I look forward to a working solution.

    • Eric,

(Sorry, I was not familiar with commenting under others)

So! You are familiar with Vash! Great series. Sorry it ended without continuation.

I tried turning off password synchronization and turning it back on. That failed.

Then, I tried your suggested method of renaming the password files. That seems to have done the job

I also tried automatic synchronization. I am concerned that my hard drive seems to be constantly working. Is that proper? Would you rather I post this portion and ask that question under a different thread?
    • Okay. . .I tried renaming the password-related files. That _did not_ work. Every time I started the browser, Foxmarks ran through the whole list of passwords on the server and passwords on my computer and asked me which I want to keep. After telling Foxmarks at least 6 different times which passwords I want to keep, I realized that something, somewhere was not retaining my choices and turned off Password synchronization. I suspect the problem is on my computer. Perhaps it is the browser. Perhaps it is the Foxmarks add-in. Perhaps it is something else. I do not know. What I do know is that Password Synchronization in Foxmarks has _not_ worked correctly for me even one time! I guess I will give up until whatever is wrong is fixed.

Thanks for chasing up Eric. Yes, I am happy again, the problem is fixed for me. Unfortunately I can't contribute much back in the way of diagnostics because I had to uninstall Firefox, install Firefox 2 and create a new profile on that for entirely independent reasons (our work software acceptance test suite only works with FF2)

"Foxmarks is synchronizing properly on one of my computers, but on my new computer it is attempting to sync and is running continually, never completing the sync."

This pretty much sums it up, Firefox 3.0.4 at work on a G5 PPC with os x 10.4.11, intel Mac pro at home with same OS and browser. Initial upload on home machine was fine, bookmarks on the server, trying to delete user data on my work machine and replace with server data hangs firefox, activity monitor shows cpu usage of 97% (firefox is not responding) spinning beachball - requiring a force quit.

    Foxmarks 2.5.3

    Advice appreciated

    Thanks

I ran into the same problem using "My Own Server" & Webdav.
I "fixed" it by using the suggestion someone made to create fresh profile.

Odd, and in my humble opinion not a wanted solution because some users spend quite some time in fine-tuning Firefox.

    Sypher,

You hit it on the head!

I have so many, many hours invested in Firefox, add-ins, and option and toolbar configurations that I absolutely loathe the idea of creating a new profile. That "solution" to problem resolution is the same as Microsoft's "format your hard drive and do a clean install!" That is not a solution, it is a cop-out. A solution involves discovering the underlying cause and correcting it. I am looking for a solution and I do not consider deleting my profile a solution.

  • Sounds like the main problem people are still experiencing is with password synchronization--can someone who's experiencing this please try replicating the problem and post what shows up on their Error Console during the sync? (I suspect the Foxmarks extension is crashing on you.)

    • Eric,

You must be careful with the words you use and the accusations against Firefox that you make because you give out false information and upset people.

The problems people have with FoxMarks and their complaints about it are not a problem with Firefox's profile. There is no such. The problems are with add-ins and what those add-ins do to the Firefox configuration.

Regarding the Error Console, the majority of errors that fill it are from Web sites that are contained within our tabs. I have tens of tabs open at once--all the time. Lately, because of schoolwork during finals week, I had up to 110 tabs open at once. Each of those Web sites may have JavaScripts running. I find errors in Error Console from CNN.com, MSNBC.com, JPost.com, and many other sites. These are not generated by Firefox or its profile, nor are they caused by any files or configurations in my Firefox profile. They are simply from the JavaScript files used by Web sites.

As for FoxMarks, when I ran it without attempting to synchronize passwords, there were no errors from FoxMarks listed in Error Console. However, after I selected to also synchronize passwords, the following two messages were all that showed up after I told FoxMarks which passwords (located either on the server or my computer) I wanted to use:
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Error: [Exception... "'This login already exists.' when calling method: [nsILoginManager::addLogin]" nsresult: "0x8057001e (NS_ERROR_XPC_JS_THREW_STRING)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://foxmarks/content/foxmarks-password.js :: anonymous :: line 390" data: no]
      Source File: chrome://foxmarks/content/foxmarks-password.js
      Line: 390
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Error: [Exception... "'This login already exists.' when calling method: [nsILoginManager::addLogin]" nsresult: "0x8057001e (NS_ERROR_XPC_JS_THREW_STRING)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://foxmarks/content/foxmarks-password.js :: anonymous :: line 390" data: no]
      Source File: chrome://foxmarks/content/foxmarks-password.js
      Line: 393
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since those messages, there has been nothing show up in Error Console from FoxMarks. At the time I write this, FoxMarks has been running the password synchronization for more than one and one-half hours. I will now cancel out of it.
    • James Capers: From those error messages, it seems that your password store in your Firefox profile folder is corrupted. I strongly believe that a new Firefox profile would fix things for you, as suggested previously. You also have the option of renaming or clearing out the specific password files in your profile folder as mentioned in this related topic:

      http://getsatisfaction.com/foxmarks/t...

You could also disable password sync, as the hangup for you seems to just be on that portion.

I had this problem and by looking at my log it was due to a lifehacker.com tip to create a dynamic "unsorted" bookmark folder. Once I removed that, foxmarks synchronized perfectly!

  • I’m frustrated
    1) Synchronisation never completes on my Win XP Pro SP3 PC, OK on 3 others. Cancelling sync then restarting gives 'Foxmarks is busy' error.
    2) Have tried setting up new profile but Firefox Settings / Change Sync Profile also never completes, current profile shows
    3) Have also tried uninstall / reinstall foxmarks, no improvement.
    4) Bookmarks list shown in my.foxmarks is complete and up to date so problem seems to be connecting to server.
    • Foxmarks developers appear to have no clue how to clean up a Firefox password file, or how to resolve this issue. So, Eric comes on here to repeat his tired refrain, "Create a new Firefox profile." This is a workaround and not a solution. Unfortunately, it appears Foxmarks developers have no intention of creating a real solution. This means, because we customers are treated so poorly, eventually enough of us will tire of this treatment and discontinue use of Foxmarks that it will no longer be supported and die. Although there are other tools to perform similar functions, such as Google Toolbar, the original intent of Foxmarks is still the best.

John Ellerington: It sounds like Foxmarks might be crashing on you when you hit "Cancel". Does anything show up in your Error Console? Check out these instructions for how to get the most detailed information from there:

    http://wiki.foxmarks.com/wiki/Foxmark...

Also, a new Firefox profile is different from a new Sync Profile; check out the instructions here for creating a new Firefox profile folder (which I suspect will fix things for you):

  • I’m amused
Creating a new Firefox profile does overcome the problem but isn't a solution as it doesn't explain what was wrong in the first place, which would have been my preferred answer. However I'm grateful to be up and running again - thanks Eric for explaining the difference between a Foxmarks profile and a Sync profile, the learning curve continues...
(p.s. I still vastly prefer Firefox to IE...)
    • Overcoming the problem isn't a solution? :)

I'm not sure what the underlying cause is, but Firefox has a long history of problems with writing out files in the profile folder. If you're curious about more details, there are two files that store your password data, signons2.txt and signons3.txt. If the files aren't written out properly (usually due to Firefox crashing while writing them out), then they can't be read properly upon subsequent start up, and need to be replaced. The other possibility is that the bookmark store is corrupted, which is stored under places.sqlite.

The easiest way to replace the files is to create a new profile--many users have trouble finding the specific files to rename them while Firefox isn't running, etc., so I recommend Mozilla's easy-to-understand instructions instead.

If you encounter the problem again, definitely feel free to just try renaming the files involved (while Firefox isn't running), and upon restart you can download data from Foxmarks and be back running again.

  • I have the same issue after a crash from my Windows machine. On the next startup, foxmarks showed me the setup screen and starts spinning forever. I tried to cancel, go to the settings, indicate my login/pwd and click the sync now button with the same result. I let it run for a few hours without any result.

    The foxmarks.log says:

    [2009-01-19 22:24:23] ------ Foxmarks/2.6.0 (/Places) starting status with sync.foxmarks.com ------

I tried to call that URL from firefox and it gave me a JSON error, so it's not a connectivity issue.

I guess I'll have to destroy my profile and restart a new one from scratch. Lucky that my passwords and bookmarks are safe at Foxmarks...

    • The comment above from Eric helped me solve the problem: I deleted from the profile folder the files signons2.txt, signons3.txt, foxmarks-baseline-*.json and foxmarks-password-baseline-*.json. I restarted FF, entered my foxmarks password and voilĂ , fixed.

      Reinstalling FF didn't help BTW.
      Thanks all for your help
    • For folks reading this in the future--deleting the files can sometimes cause problems, so I generally recommend moving or renaming the files, such as adding a ".bak" extension to the end of them.

Great to hear you got it working again, though, Eric D!

  • Very frustrated. Syncing (or attempting to do so) between two machines, both running OSX 10.5.8. One runs Safari, and one runs Firefox. Safari sync works perfectly, through the System Preferences profile on the Mac. Just trying to setup the Firefox profile now, and the Setup Wizard runs all night long, and never achieves success - it just keeps going... However, I never receive an Error message. But, I assume something is wrong, because it shouldn't have to take hours (12+) to complete, right??? Please help. Thanks!
    • And here is my log wit the error - please help!!!

It seems as though in June my work computer stopped syncing. I didnt realize it until i noticed my home computer (which i use a lot less) didnt have alot of bookmarks. Both are running XP. When i try to sync work computer, it just spins. Oddly, in the bottom right of my browser, it says that X Marks is currently working. But the bookmarks are not going up to the server. How do i rectify this. My home computer does sync.

I have the same problem and i confirm that this occurs suddenly on 4 differents pc. So i don't think this i the local profile that is corrupted.
also problem still occurs after a reinstall and even after formatting hard disk, reinstall os and reinstall firefox and xmarks plugin.

    [2009-11-23 03:20:05] Exception in AcceptNodes: Error: Places error calling function insertBookmark() {

This also occurs after launchin firefox in safe mode and ask to rester bookmarks.
For the moment the only solution is to use another synchronizer.
Does someone know an alternate synchronizing tool as good as xmarks was before this common problem occurs ?

Bummed that it seems to keep happening once I have corrected the problem. Know that it is important and challenging programming, and dislike having to spend hours making correction on my pc to re-correct issue after it has re-occurred.

  • How I found to solve this problem is to only sync bookmarks, then once those are synced, sync your passwords. This has solved the problem on both times.

  • FoxMarks / XMarks hangs any time it does not find everything in perfect order because it appears to totally lack any error handling routines or built-in repair capabilities.

As an application programmer and system administrator, I have serious issues with the poor analysis and coding skills of the XMarks developers. Their lack of built-in error handling routines reveals a minimal level of skills in problem resolution and prevention. It should not be difficult to search through even a damaged bookmarks or passwords file and rebuild it...especially for Mozilla's own developers.

Telling users to uninstall Firefox and reinstall it to solve XMarks problems is so poor it would be laughable if it were not for the fact that it reveals the total ineptness of Mozilla's developers!

Oh...wait...is that poor skill-level the reason Google has decided to forsake Mozilla and Firefox and assign Google's real software engineers to create competitive products?

  • I’m baffled
So has anyone found another program or application that does what Xmarks did at one point in time? I've been using it for quite some time now without any problems & now I can't sync here at work. Any suggestions of another application would be greatly appreciated. I'm sick & tired of waiting for Xmarks to fix, or even ANSWER, any of these failure comments.

  • I’m thankful
I discovered workable solutions. It all depends on your current XMarks status. (I tried using MozBackup but it did not produce working results for XMarks.)

If your bookmarks / passwords stored on the XMarks server are fairly recent, simply delete your current Firefox Profile, create a new one, and go through the XMarks Setup Wizard.

Before you do, however, I recommend making copies of your current extensions (if they all work properly) by going to Firefox Tools / Add-ons and expanding the Extensions tab on the dialogbox to maximum height, pressing Alt-Prt Scrn, and saving the images to Microsoft Photo Editor or whatever application you normally use for such images. Later, you can retrieve these images to reinstall the same extensions. Make sure to scroll down, make, and save images of all your current extensions.

If you are not sure when XMarks last backed up your bookmarks / passwords, you should, before creating a new Firefox profile, go to Bookmarks / Organize Bookmarks, and then Backup or Export to HTML your current Firefox Bookmarks. In addition, you should go to Tools / Options and select the Privacy tab, then click the [Saved Passwords] button, expand the window to maximum, and then click the [Show Passwords] button. Now, copy the images to the system Clipboard (Alt-Prt Scrn) and saved them in your favorite image application for later use, giving them names that snoops will not understand as password storage.

To access your Firefox profiles, copy the link of your Firefox startup location to the Clipboard, then go to Start Menu / Run and paste that link into the Open: field, surrounded by quotes and followed by a space dash p " -p" (minus the quotes). In the Profile dialog, you can delete your current profile and create a new one. DO NOT COPY any existing settings into this profile from this dialog location! Then, start Firefox, normally. BEFORE you add any extensions, RUN the XMarks Setup Wizard!

Now, after successfully running the XMarks Setup Wizard, add fresh installations of your desired Firefox extensions. Your can view your saved extension images to follow as you install your extensions afresh. Fresh installations have the added benefits of eliminating errors that have accumulated since you first installed those extensions and providing you the most current versions of those extensions.

If necessary, you have images of your saved passwords with which to update XMarks. If you decide to save these images, you can protect them by copying them into a password-protected document or spreadsheet and deleting the unprotected image files.

And, if you need to do so, you can Restore or Import your backed-up Firefox Bookmarks and rerun the XMarks Setup Wizard. On the Initial Synchronization page, "How do you want Xmarks to perform initial synchronization?," select "Merge data on the server with data on this computer." If you wish to only update your bookmarks stored on the XMarks server, on the page requesting "Which set should Xmarks use as the starting set?," select the server-stored bookmarks first ("Start with data on the server"). Otherwise, if you wish to update your locally restored bookmarks with those on the XMarks server, select your local bookmarks as first ("Start with data on this computer").

  • I think I have some useful info.

Today, I installed and ran xmarks_for_safari_10.6-1.3.2.dmg

It appeared to have broken down trying to do the initial sync; it had been running for over half an hour. But it hadn't!

Here's what happened, step by step:

The first thing the installer did was create an account for me; it was my first time using Xmarks. Then it started synchronizing my bookmarks. I was like WTF? I haven't had a chance to view or modify the settings - I hadn't enabled encryption, or chosen whether to share passwords or bookmarks for the popular bookmarks feature. So I hit cancel. Then I went in and chose the settings I wanted, and told xmarks to sync. It was at this point the app appeared to have broken down - it had been running for over half an hour. I had looked in my Safari menu, and only had a 100 or so entries. I backed up my bookmarks from within Safari. I realized I had about 5000 bookmarks, but learned that all but that 100 or so were in the sections that Xmarks ignores. So it should have been done. I found the logs, and noticed that they indicated success of the first (uninterrupted) sync:
2010-02-22 14:50:03 -0800: Info: Sync finished successfully; saving...
However, the dialog box with the cancel button, indicating that the sync was still in progress, was still up, even 5 minutes later. I clicked on the dialog box's title bar, and the window quickly updated, saying the sync was complete, and closed.

  • I got it working somehow. It involved backing up on google bookmarks, getting a partial sync on chrome, forcing from server and losing everything I had bookmarked the last few months. The force took many efforts to work. It still won't work on IE though. Blaming Firefox is pretty lame. I now use Weave Sync with NO PROBLEMS!

My biggest problem was that I had a new hard drive and relied on Xmarks to have all of my old bookmarks that I could sync to my new drive. After multiple attempts at forcing xmarks to download what they had on their server to my new hard drive it finally worked. I ended up losing a few months of bookmarks that way because it hadn't been working for awhile unknown to me. After I got that done I installed Weave Sync and synced all my bookmarks there. I now have both working in case one or the other doesn't work. Also backing up on google bookmarks for triple protection. I do not store my passwords on any of these servers.

Not sure. You would have to look at the Chrome extension list to see if it is on there. Seems like this is a Ff supported extension though, so I doubt it.
