Unknown HTTP response error in chrome and firefox on multiple computers

I am continuously receiving this error when attempting to synchronize my bookmarks in both chrome AND firefox: bookmarks error: Error with download response: Invalid response object: {"status":-3,"errormsg":"Unknown HTTP response: 502","text":"Bad Gateway","len":568,"seclevel":1}

I tried a repair from the advanced tab in settings. It said the repair was successful. Then I tried to do a manual download to fix the issue, but this was the result: Download complete.
Bookmarks: Error

The strange thing is, my bookmarks DO appear to be synching normally. I just can't get rid of the error messages. This is happening on three different computers, firefox and chrome browsers. Any advice?

  • Hi Luna,
    I'm having this same exact problem today in Chrome. It was working fine a couple of days ago, last time I added a bookmark. I tried the same things you tried, manual download, says complete, but still won't sync.

    I just found your post after I did a Google Search on the error message. I'm running Chrome with Xmarks version 1.0.22 (the current version.)

    I'm wondering if they are having some type of server problem that is affecting Sync. The Chrome version 1.0.22 is not even listed on their Release Notes page (https://buy.xmarks.com/notes.php), but the Firefox version 4.1.0 has been out for 2 months now. So if it was an issue with the Chrome plug-in, it would not be affecting Firefox too, or it would have showed up after 4/30/12 when that version was released.

    The Bad Gateway error message is reflecting an issue with traffic routing. You wouldn't happen to be on Windstream, are you? That's what I am using here.
    I just checked XMarks for IE. It is failing with the same error. The message in IE is not as detailed, but it is error ID 502 which is the same as it shows in Chrome.

    So I'm guessing either it is a routing issue with an ISP's router affecting XMarks, or an issue on XMarks end. I'm going to wait until Monday and try it from work. If it's on XMarks's end, I would expect that they will have found and resolved it by then. I can't complain, it's free and it's a great service when it works!
    • I am also using 1.0.22. My ISP is AT&T U-Verse, however I work in ISP networking and Windstream does own a lot of backbone fiber infrastructure where I live (Triangle area), so it is possible Xmarks is getting hung up at the same hop along the route for both of us, even though we are on different ISPs. It would help if I knew the IP of the sync server being used.

      Question: Do your bookmarks actually sync? My problem is either intermittent, or is being reported erroneously. When I add a new bookmark and sync, I get the error, but the bookmark still propagates normally across all platforms. The problem is more that the error message is irritating me, especially since there doesn't actually appear to be a problem with functionality.
    • I think their servers must be down from the storms, the website the Daily Caller was down for 40 hours almost for this reason but yet on their website when back up they don't put jack....

      I'm almost positive that's what it is here on Sat night June 30. 2012 ;)

  • I’m confused
    same problem here as well bad gateway the above errors also effecting 4.1.0 i don't know if its a routing error or server problems but how ever i did hear that the internet is changing to IPV6 because the internet is running out of IPV4 IP addresses and all ISP have to update. and on the 30th 0f june it was going into effect but all website won't be updated by then maybe a possibility
