I’m frustrated with the new XMARKS

Xmarks keeps crashing Firefox!!

After I installed the new Xmarks, Firefox keeps crashing. I uninstalled Xmarks and Firefox works fine. I installed an older version of Foxmarks, and Firefox works fine. Is there a fix for this?

    Hi,

If you're allowing Firefox to file crash reports, you can help us to diagnose by providing the urls for the most recent handful of reports. Those urls are available by going to about:crashes in Firefox 3.

We're seeing what appears to be a new crash in Firefox 3.0.8 related to font rendering; this may be an instance of the same thing. Being able to look at crash reports is the next step here.

I have this problem as well... can someone tell me how to fix it?

I can't do anything in Firefox at this point and I don't really want to have to go to an older version. That's a lot of work and anoying.

I'm having this problem right now, as well. My Firefox on Linux just upgraded to Xmarks and now my browser crashes everytime it tries to start.

    Help.

Please post the urls for crash reports so we can see what you're seeing. As I suggested above, you can find these urls by going to about:crashes in Firefox 3.

  • I am using Linux (Ubuntu 8.10) and When I try to go to about:crashes, a window pops up telling me that is an invalid url. How do I enable crash report filing??

This bug is annoying. The bookmarks resync fine, it just freezes when it's doing my passwords. I have to reboot my machine to correct it. I have since reverted back to the old Foxmarks and it works like a champ.

  • Ubuntu 8.10: I don't know if it's Xmarks but it has to be something with Firefox ! When I try to put my Firefox master password (not xmaks one), the system hangs....with no solution to step out of the problem.
Synching works great, no problem at all.

  • Has anyone had any luck finding a crash report that they can post the link to? Some more details on how to access that information is here:

    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/M...

We'd love to make sure we've got a fix for this in the next release of Xmarks for Firefox, so please post whatever information you have on your crashes.

    Thanks!

  • There isn't a crash report. The problem is (for me) that Firefox just hangs forever and I have to forcibly terminate it. It doesn't crash as such.

  • Hey Carolinep and Ben,

How large is your bookmark set? Also, does Firefox freeze if Xmarks is disabled? (Firefox->Tools->Addons->Xmarks->Disable)

    Thanks!

  • Since I've disabled Xmarks, my freezing problem has stopped. Incidentally, it always said at the bottom of the screen that Xmarks is "synchronising" when it hangs. But even leaving it for hours, the sync never finishes and Firefox remains hung.

I probably have about 500 bookmarks all told. Too many to count, for sure! These are organised into folders.

  • This is a total xmarks problem, as it hangs and forces me to terminate in a number of different ways. I can be using it on my Ubuntu partition or my Windows partition, and the same result. Firefox is totally updated, my machine is clean (ccleaner, spybot, and antivirus), and I've disabled all of my other Firefox add-ons. And, yet, when I go to the xmarks website and go to look at my bookmarks, it crashes. When I go change my xmarks sync settings, it crashes. When I try to sync, it crashes. I consolidated all of my diigo bookmarks in xmarks because I wanted something cleaner, but this is ridiculous.

Can you navigate to about:crashes and post the links that are listed there, we'd really like to see them, so we can sort this out.

  • I don't seem to be having a problem any more. I disabled automatic sync some time ago and it seemed to solve the problem. Subsequently I installed Window 7 RC1 64bit and tend to use that, and haven't seen a problem. After Firefox 3.5 was released and I updated my Vista 64bit install, I re-enabled automatic sync. I haven't used Vista much since, so it's maybe too early to tell, but I haven't seen the problem recur. And I haven't had it at all on Win 7.

  • I've got this problem on one of my 3 computers (2 win xp pro pcs, only one has the problem; one macbook pro does not). X Marks 3.1.0 just crashed Firefox 3.5 3 times in a row while syncing; I have now disabled it. I did file error reports but they are not shown in Firefox for some reason.

  • Nate, as I said, 'about:crashes' says 'no crash reports have been submitted'. Maybe we have a terminology conflict here: when X Marks locks up Firefox, Task Manager says Firefox Is Not Responding and I use Task Manager to quit Firefox I am asked to send an Error Report to Microsoft (I guess), which I do. Maybe this is not within the ambit of the term 'crash report' as used by Firefox.

On another front: I just noticed your reply (which I appreciate) when I happened to look on http://www.getsatisfaction.com/foxmar... . Should I be getting email notifications when you or someone else replies in this thread?

Thanks for your attempt to help. If I can provide additional information please let me know.

  • Hey Robert,

Thanks for the update, when you mentioned that you filed the reports, I hoped that they eventually showed up, as they sometimes take awhile. When you file a report with Mozilla, it'll be clear that you are sending there and not Microsoft, so I'm not sure which one is popping up for you. If you can post your last 10-20 lines of your logfile, I can check it out to see if there is anything noteworthy there.

    You can open it here:

    Xmarks Settings->Advanced->Show logfile

As far as your get satisfaction notifications, you can adjust your settings in your dashboard located on the top right.

    Thanks

  • Nate, thanks for the quick reply. On reflection I believe the Error Reports have been going to Microsoft, not Mozilla. I am now on the computer that has the problem (home PC desktop, win xp pro sp2, Intel Core 2 6600 @ 2.4Ghz w/2GB RAM) and the following is all that shows up in the logfile:

fwiw, I disabled Xmarks on this computer when I began having the problem and just reenabled it to retrieve this logfile.

I see the dashboard you are talking about and note I am 'following' this topic. Should this notify me by email when a reply to this topic is posted? I got your most recent email but can't tell if it came from you or the forum software.

    Thanks again,

Having the same problem with the new version of Xmarks for Firefox (Mac OSX).

  • If you're seeing the browser crash, please send us the url's of Firefox crash reports, as described at the top of this thread.

If you're seeing the browser hang (i.e., become unresponsive), please ensure that you are running the latest versions of both Xmarks and the browser. If you're still having problems, please write us again with specific version and platform information for both Xmarks and your browser.

  • Todd, I am running Firefox 3.5.3 and Xmarks 3.3.2 on a Win XP Pro SP2. I just now checked Firefox and Xmarks for updates and both tell me the versions I have are current.

I then just now (and I mean just now) tried to run xmarks again and after it had been running for a minute or two (and asked me if I wanted local or server versions of several bookmarks) it and Firefox became unresponsive and I had to close them using Task Manager.

This is an ongoing, frustrating problem, because Xmarks seem to run just fine on another PC and a Mac laptop for me.

  • Robert,

Is there a reason you haven't upgraded to WinXP SP3?

  • Todd, it has been suggested by several tech support folks (we spend a lot of money on them at my office) that SP2 works just fine on my computer and I should not upgrade to SP3.

And I can say that (a) xmarks used to work just fine on this computer (my last successful sync was July 30) and (b) xmarks is the only software not functioning perfectly on it.

  • Robert,

I wasn't aware that anyone thought that continuing to run SP2 was a good idea. That's certainly not Microsoft's position on the matter, but what do they know, right?

The logs that you submitted earlier all show Xmarks apparently losing consciousness as it's trying to create bookmarks locally that you created earlier on other computers. Xmarks relies on Firefox to perform this task, which in turns relies on sqlite. So the behavior you're seeing suggests that something has gone wrong with your sqlite file. Have you tried creating a new places.sqlite file?

  • >>Have you tried creating a new places.sqlite file? <<

Ummm, no, that had not occurred to me.

Come to think of it, I don't know how. Could you give directions? Where does this file reside? Do I just rename the existing file to 'old' and a new one will then be created the next time I launch Firefox? And, on which of the computers should I do this, just on the one that is experiencing the 'hanging' problem?

    Thanks,

  • I should add that it worked just fine on another desktop with XP Pro SP2.
    • I've read elsewhere that there's a problem with Xmarks 3.3.2 and WinXP SP3, and I certainly have a problem It's not so much it crashes FF 3.5.3, as it doesn't allow FF to close properly, and i have to close using Task Manager (Processes) before I can re-start. Also Xmarks is disbling legitimate pop-ups like calendars.

  • I use windows xp on quite a few machines yet on os x tiger leopard snow leopard and i ve got more than 20k bookmarks and it is horrible in firefox spikes it to a freaking 450 MB of memory. It eats up resources still in windows just doesnt seem as bad as OSX is. it has to do with syncing back to server... and i have 40-200 tabs open at any given time. ( I like to read) I want to change the polling time to do my backups at a chosen time intervals. not in the middle of when im on the web for web dev/design ideas and when im logged in http://newzbin.com it is unusuable if i disable it its fine. I realize I have more than most out there for bookmarks. Any ideas let me know

  • I think that people using "crashing" is the wrong word here: hanging, not responding are better, since the program stays open, not crashing, but whites out. I stopped it by turning off auto synch. With synching on, Firefox would hang repeatedly through the day (just calling home, I guess). I just completely flushed and rebuilt Windows (Vista) on this computer, and it started doing it right away, so it's not sqlite, or any other defective program--it's Xmarks doing its thing. . . . and doing it wrong.

  • I’m sad
Firefox hangs, gets slow and there is no error meaasge or logging. My whole windows xp gets into problems. Incredible performance problems. And the bookmarks are not synchronized correctly. All links are still in the maps/directories where I put them, but there also is a copy in the main map. And at every sync it tries to copy the links again and I have to choose for each link is I must accept the local one or the one on the server.

I think Xmarks is a good idea, but has too many flaws and cannot be used. So I deinstalled it. I will wait for a new version that has the bugs fixed.

Tip for the developers: I think you have a loop somewhere where you wait for communication and do not give time to the operating system.

  • I’m frustrated
    I am having this problem:
when I start Firefox 32 bit in my windows 7 64bit all is well for some seconds. Thenn xmarks starts to sync and this hangs the browser. There is no crash; Firefox simply does not respond anymore. When I chosse to sync manually directly after the start of Firefox all is working well.

So the problem is the autosync.

  • I’m frustrated
I just installed Xmarks for both Firefox and IE. My system is a brand new Windows 7 desktop.
The result: just after the IE install was that my system came to a grinding halt. Both Firefox and IE were "not responding". Neither process could be killed. Eventually even the start menu went down as did the Task Manager.

Needless to say, I uninstalled Xmarks.

  • I’m expecting this issue to be fixed.
For me, firefox was leaking memory when I was using Xmarks. That eventually hunged firefox and needed to restart.
The issue started since I upgraded fire fox to one of 3.x (cannot remember which one) and happened on all Windows Xp and Vista machines I have been using (4 XP machines; 3 of SP2 and 1 SP3).
I've upgraded 1 XP nad 1 Vista to windows 7 now I don't see the issue on those machines so far.

  • I’m undecided - but hopeful
I didn't know this issue existed. I have no problems with my Xmarks plug-in. I've had my browser hang or not respond or turn white. But it was because of a conflict with dif. plug-ins. Is this perhaps a possible problem for others? (Plug-in interaction). Since I've disabled or uninstalled a plug-in or two, my browser has been fine with Xmarks.

    Anyone?

    J.

One of the problems I have experience is that the StumbleUpon! toolbar addon automatically adds bookmarks to firefox every time you give a page a "thumbs up". This can result in literally thousands [or even tens of thousands] of bookmarks created, which will cause Xmarks to slow to a halt or even crash Firefox. Tens of thousands of bookmarks can actually amount to a significant amount of data, which can crash Firefox during sync.

If any of you who are experiencing this problem have StumbleUpon, I recommend disabling its bookmarking feature in Tools > Addons > Stumble Upon > Preferences > Search and Tagging, and uncheck "Save Favorites and Tags to a Firefox Bookmarks Folder".
You will also want to check and get a rough estimate of exactly how many bookmarks you have. If you have multiple thousands of bookmarks, I'd recommend deleting all of your StumbleUpon bookmarks. Your favorites are all readily available to you on the StumbleUpon site so there's really no need to clog your bookmarks folder with them.

  • I have a similar problem. I just downloaded Xmarks on a fresh installation of firefox 3.5.6 on an old mac. I used the setup wizard to sync to my existing profile, but the wizard hangs on the Introduction screen. Afterwards I try to manually sync, and again Xmarks tries to sync until I kill it. I'm using Xmarks 3.4.6 on this computer and have had no problems on my other computers.

This is a completely fresh install with only one other extension added (AdBlock Plus), so it's unlikely to be any conflicts or configuration problem.

  • I’m sorry
    Hello everyone :
    Same huge problem here.
Firefox 3.5.6 + Xmarks 3.4.5 > and it keeps freeeeeeeeeezing.
On my iMac + last installation on a MacBookPro.

Firefox had been running for a minute or two (and asked me if I wanted local or server versions of several bookmarks) it and Firefox became unresponsive. After that the Bamboo pen-mouse gets the same freezing. Great.
