I’m happy

number of pictures, number of sets, connecting maps

500 pictures on a map is not enough: make it 50.000.
One should be able to connect maps so that you can see devellopments in time and space. Like 'stacking' them.
Show pictures on a map in batches: like 'churches' or city-halls but also churches and city-halls.
Have 1000 sets in one map.
The pins are very dull. Find a very good designer to fine-tune this - and the rest of the site too.

  • Hi Paul,

Unfortunately to have 50,000 images on a map is actually outside the bounds of workable. As we have to query flickr everytime to get the set of photos you select, or save the search term you enter if you have searched your profile, then getting 50,000 blocks of photo information is a massive amount of data. This in itself would take a very long time, not including the time to display it on a page, and add the points to a google map.

For the foreseeable future the limit of 500 images will be maintained. Sorry if this cause you any problems.

Also am sorry if you don't like the flags and well from what you have said the design of the site, but we do have plans in the near future to update all of this as we never expected for iMapFlickr to take off as massively as it has.

    Thanks again for your feedback,

    Colin

  • I’m overwrought with joy and high expectations
    Dear iMapFlickr folks:
Overall, I'm really impressed by this tool! I'm not demanding a gazillion pics per map, but I would just add that I feel 500 pics is a limit that is too low. I have a set that is currently 1000 -- I anticipate it could grow to 1500 on the upper end before the project is finished. It's a lot of work adding all those geolocations in flickr, just to be disheartened by the lower limit on this end. I am currently the artist-in-residence at Badlands National Park and was hoping to use this as a creative and presentation tool. If there are any creative work-arounds that I'm not aware of, I'd love to hear from you!

  • Hi Kathleen,

Firstly thanks for the compliment. It's great to hear what others in the real world think.

We have been thinking lately about increasing the limit of the photos on the map. But we are toiling between the numbers and the usability of it all. How many people would look at your map and go through 500+ images in a sitting, while reading your blog. There will be some, especially if your photos are really great, but there will be more people out there that will look at the first few pages (the scrolling gallery) of images and then carry on reading your blog and might not come back up to the map. However that still "costs" in terms of processing all that information.

You could split your sets up and have multiple maps, displaying them at different points in your blog while you talk about the photos in the map, and that would certainly give people more chances to easily see all your photos.

That said we are looking into certain techniques, trying out different ways to show the images on the map instead of 1 large blob of flags when you have more than 500 images.

Thanks again for the compliment and we will keep you all updated.

  • i would just like to add that i totally agree with mr. dijstelberge, 500 is just two low of a limit. im a photographer in the san francisco bay area where i do most of my work, i have something in the neighborhood of 15,000 images on flickr - all of which are geotagged. sparing you the details of my work... if i or my customers can't see all of the territory that i have covered, or in some cases not covered, for me personally your geotagged map loses a lot of it's value. otherwise, i love your product (flags included), raise the limit to 20 or 30 thousand and i would be most interested in becoming your first paying customer!

    cheers - patrick @flickr pbo31

    I’m scared by 30,000 images.
    Hi Patrick,

Thanks for the compliment. We are interested in allowing more than 500 images at a time to be loaded into the map, but we have to make sure that we do it in such a way that doesn't affect performance of iMapFlickr itself.

Have you thought about loading all your images into different sets, and have a different map for each set? Am not sure about what your pictures are about, so I don't know if that is possible but certainly it would go a long way to resolving the issue of trying to display 30K of images at one time...you could have multiple maps on the same page achieving the same result.

Although having 30K of points and images on a Google map would be awesome and something to strive for in the future.

  • I agree. 500 is way too low!!! I would like to add a world map to our family website so that we can show our family all the great places we've been. However, 500 photos is not nearly enough to display all of our adventures. Maybe you can have a payment option where we can pay to display more than 500 pictures at a time.
