I’m frustrated

Why won't my frigidaire affinity washer spin ??

I have a frigidaire affinity ATF6500GO front load washer. The machine seems to function correctly except it will not spin. It sounds like the door locks, the pump kicks in and then it wont spin. What is the problem? This machine is only 2 years old !!

I have a Frigidaire Affinity washing machine, model # FAFW3801LW3, with the same issue noted by many in this forum - would not spin or drain. In fact it would not do anything except turn the drum a few times, run the pump, then pause, stop, and that's it. The machine is 14 months old.
Here is what I did to fix:
get old towels, a bucket, screw drivers, channel lock pliers, socket/nut driver, hose clamps.
Option 1: press the 'Cancel' button. All of the indicator lights and LED screen should go off. Then press any button to wake the machine. Wait 5 seconds. Then press and hold 'Start/Pause' and 'Cancel' button simultainiously. This will display the error code on the LED screen. It will say 'E21' or 'E34' or some such thing. Go back to the internet and find out what the error code means.
    Or
Option 2: pull the machine away from the wall so that you can access the back of the machine with your body and a #2 philips screwdriver. You have to do this anyway in order to repair the machine, so have at it. The top cover of the washer is white porcelain sheet metal panel, held in place by 2 screws at the back of the machine. The 2 screws that go through the porcelain...Remove the screws, then remove the top cover. When the top cover is removed you will see a paper booklet that has directions for obtaining error codes (Option 1), booklet contains a list of error codes, trouble shooting procedures and wiring diagram, multiple languages.

In my case it said that the pump wasn't working. Not true, I could hear it pumping. The black rubber outlet boot needed to be cleaned.
Opinion - If you got an error code your control board is probably OK.
(If the door latch is the issue - unplug machine. remove the screws on the front of the latch. Grasp the wiring harness and use it to pull the switch up to where you can see it. Get a new switch, install. 4 screws, done.)
    So,
    Unplug the machine.
My machine has an oval cover on the back. Remove 5 screws, loosen bottom (6th) screw, remove cover. Disconnect and remove the drain hose. Water will go everywhere. Mop up with old towels. Take the drain hose outside and shove your garden hose in the big end. Run water at full blast throught the drain hose to clear any obstuction. Set aside. Back to the machine. Find the black rubber boot connected to outlet side of drum and inlet side of pump. (mine had 3 connection points) Open the hose clamps as needed to remove the black rubber boot. Again, water will go everywhere. The black rubber boot has a perforated plastic cup inside it. The cup is designed to catch coins, pins and other debris, and prevent that junk from getting into the pump and wrecking it. In my case the perforated cup was stuffed with coins, rocks, lint, shoelaces. Empty and clean the black rubber boot and the preforated cup. Put the cup back in the boot, it goes in the last bellows, near the bottom...
Save yourself some aggravation, throw away the spring hose clamps and get some regular hose clamps at the hardware store. Re-installing the black rubber boot will be much easier. Re-install the black rubber boot, make sure all clamps are snug. Re-install drain hose. Re-install porcelain cover and oval cover. adjust the feet. mop the floor. Plug in. Done.

the most difficult thing about the entire process is getting the hoses back on...

My affinity is doing the exact same thing. I took the back off, had nothing in the filter or boot. I cleaned the door closure on the front, still nothing. I does everything but the fast final spin and it shuts off at 6 min left if I use the spin only cycle. Not sure what else to do at this point. I guess I will try the Option #1 above. This happened one time before and it was the lint in the trap. Not so this time.

  • Most likely it's the door lock/switch. It will do all kinds of crazy stuff when the switch is bad.

  • I’m screwed too.
They did a crappy job of designing the door latch. The engineers left it wide open in a humid atmosphere. Cough up $80+. It isn't hard to install if you have long arms.

  • I’m screwed
Machine filled all the way up with water and spilled over into the drain. Replaced water level sensor. $40 gone. Called service man. He replace the hose to the water level sensor. $44 gone, just for the hose. They are damned proud of that 25 cent hose. He cleaned the filter while I had him here and replaced the water valve assembly. It never worked right, but they wouldn't replace it when I complained about the noise when it was in warranty. So $300 and a week later I have clean clothes again. Pump is noisy but I'm not replacing it til it quits.
Next time I'm buying the extended warranty so nothing will go wrong.

  • I’m Satisfied

Our Affinity would pause several times per cycle regardless of the cycle and only seemed to work OK with no clothes in it. For quite awhile it would take 20 minutes to finish the last 1 minute of the cycle. We just accepted it.
I followed the steps in option 2, the error code was E21, not draining. The filter cup in the boot was overflowing and packed tight with bobby pins, buttons and mostly cat fur. I cleaned it and put it back together with clamps that take a socket or screw driver. The spring clamps are a pain due to the reach required to get at them and the positioning of the clamp. I set the new clamps to reduce the reach and twisting as much as possible to make it easier to service in the future.

The washer works awesome now gets thru the last minute in a minute. The clothes are dryer when the cycle is done and smell a little cleaner too.

I plan to perform this as routine service once a year when I clean / change the dryer vent. It makes sense to keep that stuff out of the pump and I feel like a chump for not doing this sooner. Now I know that not cleaning the drain system is like never checking or changing the oil in your car.

Thank you for the detailed instructions. This was very helpful and saved us the cost of a service call and the 5 days we would have waited for them to show up.

I don't know if the washer we have is a newer model, but if you turn the washer on its side, there is a hole in the bottom that allows for easy access of the perforated filter cup. My husband and I were able to clean it out and put back together in less than 30 minutes. Works like a charm now.

I suggest a 6 month maintenance on the filter clean out. We had ours a little less than a year when it stopped spinning. Thank you to everyone who posted! We definitely saved a ton of money.

1 year new Frigidaire Affinity washer and it will not spin. Washes well, drains well but will not spin. Repair guy said main control board out - "these Frigidaires are lousy washers" he said. To repair = new control board for about $450 - $500! Good grief . . .

  • The door latch on the Affinity is poorly designed. It is open to a high humidity atmosphere and the contacts corrode. Replace the door latch. About $80 and you can do it yourself. Take the top off and you can see the switch. Unplug the machine. Be careful not to drop anything into the "hole".
Be sure that door correctly aligns with the latch. My grandchillun hung on my door and bent the hinge. Just grab the door and bend it back up.
Someone could get rich if they built a better door latch.

  • My Frigidaire washer is not draining or spinning completely. It doesn't have a screen that will show an error code. Our warranty ran out Feb 7, 2013 and the manufacturer said they would pay for parts, but we are responsible for service / labor cost. They are coming out Friday to diagnose the problem. If the cost is more than $300.00, a new washer will be bought with an extended warranty. We shall see.

  • I’m amused
Update - after two trips and appointments, the problem with our Frigidaire washer is repaired. The 2 repairmen that came out proudly replaced the control board and then stood back smiling when they set the washer to spin and started it. After the full cycle (9 minutes) and no spinning, I again suggested the door latch be replaced as I had read about that fix many times on this board. With a "yeah sure" grin one of the repairman agreed and brought the part in and installed it. The next spin cycle worked! So then with quizzical looks they were astonished that I asked them to remove the new control board and subtract the cost. "It might be working because of the combination of the two repairs." Again, I said to remove it and I would take that chance. They did and again started the spin cycle and it worked again! Haha
Thanks to all here who shared and pointed me in the correct direction. The "experts" sure didn't know . . .

  • It takes two repairmen. One to turn the screws and the other to carry the money back.

  • I have found out over the years that the average experience level of today's technician has dropped dramatically either due to lack of practical knowledge or the retirement of more seasoned techs. I never fail to go online to research a glitch, problem, or failure before choosing a course of action. Good for you for standing your ground. I have fixed my own washer and dryer now just off the information that was available here over a year ago. Time for consumers to take back and return the customer in service.

  • I found this post today, after limping along with a malfunctioning washing machine for the past month. I found the hole in the bottom of the washer, and between that and removing the back oval piece, I found the boot, cleared the gunk clogging it (finding over $2.00 in change in the process), and had the washer back together in less than an hour. It runs like a charm now, spinning out and finishing the cycle like it did when new. I am *finally* caught up on laundry! Thank you all!
