Why won't my frigidaire affinity washer spin ??

  • Question
  • Updated 7 months ago
I have a frigidaire affinity ATF6500GO front load washer. The machine seems to function correctly except it will not spin. It sounds like the door locks, the pump kicks in and then it wont spin. What is the problem? This machine is only 2 years old !!

I am not sure however I was told that the machine may have two switches on the door and one of the swithches may have gone bad which may affect the spin cycle....I am having a tech come and look at it and when he does within the next few days I will update you!

More than likely a faulty door switch. This happened to me and after a diagnostic test to ensure the unit spins (bypasses the security feature which shuts down the spin cycle) I changed the door switch and it's going on strong.

I have the same washer and I have to take it apart almost every 1-2 months, my household is just me and wife, so I dont even use it that much so it shouldnt give me this many problems. Now it will not high speed spin, but does every thing else fine; sounds like the same problem, I think I am done with front loaders just not worth it, not to mention I have to keep it close to a drain just in case it decides to leak again

I have all Frigidaire Gallery series appliances. Was always a Kenmore girl. Had my front loader for 4 years now and just started to have problems. Cleaners out the filter and hoses ( metal hoops from underwire bras, change, hair and a few earrings) Put it back together...cleared the coded and seems to be running fine. Time will tell, however. Pain in the rear end to get to that pump and filter.

The same thing happened to our washer just now. We have had for a year. I guess we will spend our $400 that will cost to fix it and buy us a Kenmore!!

We have done just what the above poster is considering, purchased a Kenmore! We will never buy Frigidaire again. Unfortunately, we now have a mismatched set of white washer with the red Frigidaire dryer, but I'm sure we will have to replace that with a Kenmore in a year or so when that goes bad! Obviously, these machines are lemons, has anyone had any luck with getting a refund?

I have just spent 400 dollars in repairs for the same problem and my front loader is still not working. My washer and dryer are 2 years old. This is very discouraging. Im seriously thinking of going to a resale appliance store and buy something that will work until it dies. I HAVE HAD MAYTAGS THAT LAST FOREVER. I STILL CANNOT USE THIS FRIDGEDAIRE PIECE OF CRAP.....SORRY I BOUGHT A FRONT LOADER.....LAURA ps...chris please dont respond because I dont want to be smooged anymore over this piece of grap machine

Hi Laura,

I had the same problem. I cleaned the filter basket first. It didn't correct the problem. I then went to a local appliance store and purchased a door lock assembly. It was about $70. I removed the lid (2 screws in the back). Reached down in the front and held the switch as I removed the two screws that held it on. Then pulled the switch up and swapped the 3 wires attacched to the switch to the new one, reinstalled and fortunately it worked. May be worth a try before you spend another $400.

It won't spin because the door lock assembly is bad
Part #131763202 order it on ebay for $40 including shipping.
You have to take off the door panel it's what those two prongs
on the door go into. Take off the top panel, then bottom front
panel. then the control panel, then you have access to the
screws to take off the door panel. There's two screws holding
the door lock assembly. You see them when you open the door
Unscrew the screws and disconnect the three plugs going into
the assembly itself. replace and reassemble and you're good to go

To change this you don't need to take all the panels off. just release the gasket and the 2 screws video here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prkM2X...

Same exact thing on my Frigidaire Affinity front load washer. The machine seems to function fine during the rest of the wash. It performs the slow alternating spins to balance and agitate the clothes. When it gets to the high speed cycle at the end, the pump kicks on for a few minutes while the load just sits there, and then the machine cuts off about 6 minutes left. This happens regardless of whether or not we use 'spin only' or a standard program cycle, and whether the machine is empty or not. The pump functions fine, the hose is unobstructed, and the machine is stable. It's just over two years old, and I don't have time or resources to blow on this lemon right now. I already had to replace the motor on it a few months back.

Anyone actually find a solid solution to this?

I contacted Chris at chris.polk@electrolux.com and he requested model, serial, and date of purchase. Then he sent me info on where to take it to get it repaired for free. Mine did the same thing. From what I could gather, the tech said he changed the door lock and the main circuit board. He also recommended to be gentle to door while shutting it.

Mine was doing the same thing. It didn't happen on every load. Just every so often. Took the drain hose off the back and cleaned it out and it still was doing the same thing, shutting off when it had 6 minutes left. It would do the half spin and drop but nothing more. Took out half of the clothes( not a full load ) and washed them on a quick wash. It did spin but going to keep an eye on it and will keep in mind the door lock.

Okay, so the washer repair man showed up this morning and after he opened it up then ran a computer diagnostic on it, he says to me "It'll be $420.00 for a new computer board, their is a short on the board that is stopping the final spin. He got it to work during the diagnostic but he had to hold something up to it (wasn't paying attention). I told him "I can buy a new washer for that price" He said nothing but understood. I asked him for any referrals on the best washers out there. He said unless your real concerned about saving water and have money to spend on repairs forget about the front loaders their shit. He recommened I buy Kenmore, Maytag or Whirpool top loader. After i handed him his $65 service fee, i called my husband who went out and got me a brand new Whirpool top loader washer for $330. WILL NEVER BUY A FRONT LOADER AGAIN!

You should have bought a Speed Queen. You will have better luck with the Whirlpool top loader but the Speed Queen top loader and front loader are the very best made. I see very few Speed Queens in my repair business and when I do , they're old ones! Appliance Service - Wytheville, Va.

We are having this same problem right now. We've just dumped $150 into parts to fix this 2-year-old washer, and it's still not working. It completely stopped spinning two days ago; after replacing various parts, we replaced the switch, and it spins very slowly, but never kicks into final high speed spin. No wonder Frigidaire pushed the extended warranty--I've never needed one before, but now I wish I'd gotten it. Looks like it's going to be major bucks out the window.

The repair guy made his second visit today to replace the motor control to eliminate the spinning problem and replaced the very moldy boot. Then the bad news - the door lock needs to be replaced. So I've had every problem I've seen on this board and others. He said the next thing to go will be the drain pump and once that is replaced I basically have a new unit.

My 6000 is two years old. I called Frigidaire customer service and told the rep how disappointed I am - that I whined and fussed to get this so we would use less water, energy and be easier on clothes and now here I am. They covered the parts cost so all I am covering is the service call (a one time fee). The unfortunate thing is the guy has to come back a third time.

Brenda, & All Others,

You could ask this question all day long "What's wrong with my machine???", but the truth is, that even if I told you you would still need a service tech to check it out as the high probablity of you getting shocked is there and we techs would feel bad over that. That being said, your prob is located within one of three (if not all) different areas. Most common to this machine is as follows, machine will run thru all cycles to the last 6-8 minutes on display, main complaint is it won't spin - high or low spin. 1: Generally it is within the door switch, reason, people slam their doors to their washer (top load & front load) without knowing the damage it does to the machine door switches, you need ohm meter to check or know tech code to get into test mode (I don't give out --- don't ask). 2: Machine has motor control/power supply electron control board. This board controls the voltage to the motor in not only direction but speed (hence, your agitate & spin speeds.) Only way to check is with volt/ohm meter and knowing that if you touch the motor while plugged in and turned on --- we will be standing at your grave site remembering why we don't work on these machine ourselves without training----. 3: Motor bad, defective, history, must be replaced. And, yes it will cost an average of $200.00 or more to fix. It's not cheap to buy and they are not cheap to repair. You don't by a BMW vehicle and take it to the mechanic whom only make $5.00 an hour.

People buy these things thinking that they are getting a first class machine and for the price it should never break. I know, because I hear people say that every time I make a service call on one of these. They are getting a first class machine, just remember that it is new technology with a lot of electronics -- saves water, electric bills, and soap ( you can thank our famous goverment for that mandate) and will wash cloths better than a top load unit. They are not cheap to buy &, THEY ARE NOT CHEAP TO FIX. Kinda like building a new house with $10,000.00 countertops and expecting that when you drop your iron skillett on it to have it repaired for $100.00 --- don't think so.

I can say this, from my service calls that I run, Frigidair units are by far the best Anerican made units available, compared to Whirlpool, Matag or G.E.. I know, cause I work on them.

I read your comment and I know I can say for 99% of us WE DO NOT SLAM THE DOOR TO THE WASHER! Don't blame the problem on the numerous complaints on the consumer. That is a cop out. There aren't just a few complaints..there are a lot and it is the same complaint from everyone. THAT should show you that there is a very definitive problem with the Frigidare product. I bought my washer and dryer because I trusted the Frigidare products and now I see that they do not back thier own product. My dryer isn't working either. It dr on the door. They don't even know what that means but again I am not the only one having problems with the dryer. I do not recommend this product to anyone that asks me when the are shopping for the front loaders. I had my old washer and dryer for 20 years with no problems and thought I should upgrade while I had the chance...no I have the "newer" ones sitting in my garage and I hooked up my sisters old ones and those are still working great---such a shame!

William you have an ego problem going on don’t you. Not everyone is as dumb as you seem to indicate, I have two I got one for my father and one for myself and the same problem. If I knew the correct answer I and a lot of us have a clue as to unplug the thing before we work on electricity. You must be an idiot to think everyone is below you since you are a TECH.

Well, lets all be hostile, shall we? We will just accuse one another for slamming/ not slamming, having an ego/ not having an ego..... ect. I think you all are right. The washers are very good, very energy efficient, and very much on the high end. However, they are very sensitive machines. Don't bash on a machine because something bad happened to it. Give it a chance, make it work, if you cannot, it's crap. However, if your Iphone breaks, you don't call it crap and get a different phone, you replace it or you have it fixed. Same concept, ok? Don't give up on it if you valued it once, you can value it again. Eyes of the beholder, love. God bless!

If it is 2 months old you could still try to get a refund with the store. Theres a lot of failure cases about this infinitty series in the internet. Just make a search about Infinity series problems and you will see there are thousands of complaints. You can use this to make a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and your states attorney general and maybe you have more rights according to your state law. Problem is most people wont make complaints to the BBB or attorney and if you dont let it know publicly then they dont bother as they only worry when their rep will suffer and lower sales. If everybody that have a problem with it make a complaint with the BBB , it will show in the BBB webpage and they will have to change their tactics. If your problem is the control panel, it have changed part number about 3 times in less than 2 years, which indicate theres a problem with that part (bad design) and they dont want to make a recall. Hope this helps.

My problem just started. I used it 3 days ago, now it won't agitate or spin. eventually on an empty cycle, it times out and stops. hmmmmm.... I'm sure I'll get the run-around too. I spent too much money at Sears for this washer and dryer set last year. Now this??? Hell, I should have kept my 17 year old Norge set that still worked. Screw efficiency and good looks. These black frontloaders and pedestals SUCK!!!!!! I'm broke and pissed! I still haven't contacted a repairman as of yet. Let's see what they tell me. about my model #atf6700fe1 affinity frontload washer.

I got you all beat. I bought my washer on wednesday and by saturday I realized it doesn't work at all. I have never owned a front load so wasn't sure what to expect or even how they went through their cycles. I picked it up at the store unpacked it lugged it down the basement steps and hooked it up. all very heavy and tirying i might ad. Loaded it full of clothes and watched about 2 gallons of water enter the drum and flop back and forth hardly doing anything. The first load came out soaked and took 100 minutes to dry. Did about 5 more loads and at one point the door was stuck in the lock position for over an hour. I called the dealer I got it from and he offered to replace it at no charge so now I have to go through the whole backbreaking b.s again to maybe get a machine that works, not to mention the half day of my life to do what I shouldn't have to go through. If the electrolux rep is reading this how do I get reimbursed for time and fuel expenses involved in this nightmare? My wife got so pissed yesterday she spent $20 and all of saturday at the laundromat. I have all frigidair gallery series, fridge, stove, dishwasher and microwave so assumed I was getting the same quality. My best friend has a set made by samsung and 6 kids and 2 years later not a single issue. This thing is a pos and apparently by these other posts is not gonna get better with time! At least most of you got to enjoy your washer for at least one load, I didn't even get that! I want the extended warranty free of charge since it sure looks like i'll need it. The dealer wont refund my money and sell nothing but frigidair so i'm screwed into taking this piece of crap in hopes that it last at least a few years till I can save up enough money to buy a samsung or something with good reviews cause this thing is the black plaque of the internet for front loaders. Shame on you electrolux! You know theres issues with these and are doing nothing to correct it. To anybody reading this run to a dealer that doesn't sell frigidair washers they're junk!

Well heres a follow up to my last post. The appliance store I bought the washer from was in today doing paperwork and called me personally concerend about my few day old washer that didn't work. Props to him as it was a sunday. So I loaded up the washer from the basement with my 110lb wifes help made the 40 mile roundtrip and wound up with a washer that works, FOR NOW! So far i'm out about 5hrs and who knows how much nat gas drying clothes that weren't wrung out. I must say that i'm impressed with it's performance now that I actually have one that works but must say fridgidaire/ electroclutz and their spokesperson kelly skeletore have lost me as a customer for life over this and all other reviews i've read. I've emailed the company in hopes that someone cares enough about joe public to give a crap about their shortcomings and due the right thing and provide me with an extended warranty since it sounds like i'll be needing it. I drove past my local appliance store who sells and services LG and Samsung to buy american and got nothing but headaches for it.

your state must surely have laws regarding buying a lemon appliance and mney refund so if it is only a day old you should be able to get your money back someway if that is what you wish . Make a complain to the Better Business Bureau about it stating that the product have a problem that is known as theres plenty of cases online. Also you can make a complaint to your state attorney general. Problem is most people dont make complains in the apropiate forum and so theres no proof of their doings.

all you need to do is replace the door lock assembly. you've got a faulty wax motor preventing the door from securely locking and stopping the spin cycle. $50 and 10 minutes of work. thankfully a very easy fix!

On a waasher thats 2 years old you shouldn't have to spend anything let a lone $50. I sold the cheapest GE topload that we could afford new 7 years ago to get this POS. I could wash a king sized comforter in my old one just like with this one, the difference is it now comes out sopping wet. My wife and I have got to the point of being not stressed about money, not stressed enough that I went to the local store that sells japanese brands and now have a samsung in the basement that actually works. Anybody who wants a 1 month old washer that may or may not do its job and may or may not last feel free to contact me so I can talk you out of it. Theres $600 down the drain and countless hours of my life spent that I'll never get back, not to mention going to the laundromat which I haven't done since being single.

This washer is a complete piece of junk. One week--no kidding, a week--after the warranty ran out, we had to replace the lock AND the pump. That was last summer. Now, the pump sounds like it's going out again. Mechanically, it's unsound. The body is poor, too: look at it wrong, and it scratches and dents. I'm now saving for a new washing machine--NOT a Frigidaire, of course--and upset (understatement of the world) that I wasted so much money on what I'd hoped would be a washing machine that would save me money (hah!) and last a long time. Whatever. Don't buy this!!!!

Well, I've got you all beat with how long it took to not work....we had our machine on Saturday at 11:30am. I put in the first load of laundry as the delivery truck was pulling away from the curb....within 15 minutes of starting the 48 minute cycle, the machine turns itself off.
We've tried several times, thinking we did something wrong...Nope, we've gone a week without a machine, now we're going another week waiting for a replacement.
The reviews for the LG and Samsung aren't that stellar either??? I had my previous compact front loader for 9 years and loved it. It was Kenmore, made by Frigidaire.
Hopefully, our next one won't be a lemon....

julijansen, Kenmore is made by Whirlpool, NOT Frigidaire. That's why it worked for so many years. If you, or anyone, doubts this, go to any Sears store and they will verify that Whirlpool makes Kenmore, not Figidaire. I will never, EVER buy another Frigidaire product again so long as I shall live! We bought the same machines you all did, and had the same problems. P.O.S. Also bought side-by-side stainless steel fridge, has been repaired three times; dishwasher, 'Professional Series', repaired three times, the dryer repaired only once (so far), and the range needed the oven door replaced the friggin day we had it delivered! You get what you pay for. Spend the extra money and buy Whirlpool, Kenmore (Whirlpool sold through Sears) or Maytag. I will next time.

I know the reviews aren't exactly gleaming on many front loaders but my 1 month old affinity is setting in the basement while I deal with the attorney generals office to receive a refund from frigidair. We since purchased samsung and no complaints at all. The frigidair shredded my daughters swimsuit as well as my sons wrestling singlet which being school ordered uniforms werent cheap, it also ate a pair of my wifes dress pants for work as well a countless pairs of expensive designer undergarments so basically a $600 washer the first month cost around $1000. I put our clothes in and then dry them with no worries from the samsung, it does what it's suppose to do everytime. We had the luxury of having plenty of room but if you don't bosch makes a small compact front load. As much as I like to support small town merchants I would recomend buying from a store such as sears who offers a 90 day return policy if your not satisfied. Keep the frigidaire if you only plan on washing thick items that can't possibly get stuck between the drum and the machines body and then be spun at 1000 rpm's and shredded or burned up. This washer is a poor design in so many ways that electrojunk turns a deaf ear to the consumer on proof by this site and countless other. Good luck cause your in for a long fight from a company who really doesn't care. I might also suggest a high efficency top loader as well.

Oh and your kenmore made by frigidair was probably the gallery series which was a consumers best by and received top notch reviews by all who owned them yet is still a frigidair. I know I wouldn't want anything made by them again but thats up to you. Hope this helps?
