st annes/lytham news?

Would anyone be interested in getting up to the minute news on the web regarding lytham and st annes?

I was thinking of designing a web site that is wholly dedicated to news, articles and items of interest.

The unique aspect of the site would be that the local people actually report the news stories.

This is just an initial investigation but if there is enough interest I may put an implementation plan in place.

After looking at the lytham st annes express site for the last year I realised that perhaps we could do with a more dynamic local news site

There are site around that offer a degree of local news (counterbalance springs to mind) but nothing I know of that allows residents to submit stories (as opposed to commenting on news items). I suppose the main issue would be accuracy. Allowing anyone to contribute means bias, factual inaccuracy, etc would be rife. On the other hand, if you were to only accept contributions from a small pool of writers in an effort to apply some quality control to the content, you risk becoming too similar to a local newspaper.

If it's made clear that the content is opinion rather than fact, that's fair enough but if the aim is to provide balanced, accurate news stories then I'd be skeptical as to whether the man in the street could reliably provide appropriate material.

I imagine editing the content would become a full time job!

many thanks for your feedback.

I was planning on the man on the street reporting it then a number of reporters going and verifying the news items as they come in

This would then be published as quickly as possible

Go for it, Dave. Nothing to lose except time and effort. I'm sure you can see most of the potential difficulties involved, but if you were able to get it up and running, with reliable and accurate news reports, I'm sure people would read it. Make sure you get some insurance to protect yourself against libel, though!

I would be interested in reading some local news that allows people to express opinion (comment)

You would use the wordpress platform to reduce costs for Blackpool does a great job and encourages some excellent debate (sometimes his views are little off the wall)

I am testing something similar, it finds all the press releases from Fylde Coast sources automatically. Would welcome some opinion articles but need to be carefull of course.

working title is Your Fylde Coast
