Data about religious beliefs?
I would like to see religion in the data, because I would like to know, whether the catholic belief (don't to use condoms) might be correlated to HIV-infections. Or don't the people care, and other christians in sub saharian countries are equally infected?
-
I strongly second this. I downloaded Gapminder specifically for religious data.

I think, the reason for hidding those data, may be the possible use of them on segregational propaganda, and such...
BUT...
Here in Brazil, we are very close to became a Fundamentalist Republic!
In the last presidential elections, the PSDB candidate Jose Serra, flirt with a bunch of deeply concervative organizations, as Opus Dei... Some market pieces from that ocasion, had a single frase: "I believe in Jesus". That creeped me out.
AND...
Under the light of those writen above, I'd like to say: Hiding the truth was NEVER the fairiest thing to do. Please Hans, help us to avoid a new "Ayatollahs" republic. -

agree. relgion seems more baasic than some of the other indicators. thanks

Religious beliefs drive more decisions around the world and throughout human history than any of the other indicators other than perhaps food/survival itself. Please include historical religious beliefs with the data.
Thanks!

I have heard claims that non-religion (or atheism) is correlated with low murder rates. It would be fascinating to see if this is reflected in the world data.

Tom Rees at Epiphenom has reviews on papers that include religious data: http://epiphenom.fieldofscience.com/
-
-
eg Chon's analysis suggests that ethnic and language barriers can increase murder rates, but religious differences do not. However, there are a few caveats...

Ok it is nice that we can now colour the bubbles by main religion, but I would really like to be able to set the population fraction identifying with each religion, or none, as an axis.

I can't f*kng believe that even though this post is over 2 years old, and the information is clearly available, GapMinder is clearly ignoring it.

Veniamin: Gapminder has limited time and resources. I am sorry that you and others have been waiting for so long. We have been looking at consistent timeseries for percentages of different religions for countries. If you know of great such source, please let us know. We would love to have more data on religions, but at least we have made it possible to color the country by the main religion. As in the chart used in this video: See the link in the text below the video: http://www.gapminder.org/videos/relig...

Is there anything new with this? Wikipedia is stating religion percentages per country from the CIA fact book. is that not a good source?

I would be interested in seeing something like "religion" cross-referenced to GNP, education level attained by women, etc. Defining "religion" for the purposes of the comparison may be the toughest part.
-
Percentage of population that adheres to a particular religion. It could even make the country circles into pie charts colored according to religious adherence... Or split countries apart by religion (like it can do with cities) to see where each religious community falls on the plot in any specific country. Finding the data is the tough part, but I really wish they would add what they have so far. Blank spots are just fine with me if that's all we've got.

It's a conspiracy I tell you! I know the data is sparing, but I can't help but think that all of the data points to "duh" and they just don't want to offend people. Raise your hand if you're giddy to cross check religiosity against all of the world's ills!

This reply was removed.
see the change log -
I would like to see, how many people belief in religion A or B, etc... Absolute and as a percentage of world population... I mean maybe absolute numbers rise but relative to world population religion is dropping.
-
-
Religious people won't let this data be shown in gapminder, because TRUTH is bad for people.
Sad, but aparently true.
I wanted to see corelations of religiosity for my girl studies, and imidiatelly thought about gapminder and.. got disappointed.
This is to say that i second the idea of sharing with users with all available data, to see what this world really revolves around. -

More than five years now! According to Samuel Huntington, in Clash of Civilizations, religion is perhaps the most important cultural trait of any country or civilization. So, what's going on here? Historical data is not obligatory. We could have data only for year 2000 or 2010, and this alone would be good to compare with so many other variables. Gapminder team, what exactly do you think of it?
-
-
I'm sure Gapminder has a good reason for not ever (?) mentioning religion - but I'd sure like to know what it is!
In particular, I'd like to see some stats on the change in non-religious v religious beliefs around the world. -
-
Is there any news on this? Have Gapminder said why they aren't using religious data?
-
-
Please please please I need this to teach statistics in my country. I live in a secular country but the majority of people are muslim and the level of bigotry have increased drastically the last few years. I really need this to debunk some judgments in society. Please please pleas I beg you T__T

Hmm, we are up to 8 years waiting now. I think this is not just a matter of priorities anymore...
