What Causes Gun Violence in the US and the rest of the world?

What are the underlying causes of gun violence? I have seen data sets that show a general correlation of gun ownership and gun death rate in the US, but there are clearly other factors. Why does Louisiana have three times the gun death rate as Minnesota, when they have similar gun ownership rates? How do poverty, population density, types of guns, race, religion, gun laws, education, mental health care and climate correlate with gun violence? How do gun ownership and violence numbers compare in other countries?

The NRA refuses to concede that gun ownership leads to more gun violence, but they have no data to offer that shows any other factors. I beleive that gun violence can be reduced in the US and the rest of the world using a data-driven approach.
We can't solve a problem if we don't know all of the factors that cause it.
