Good questions! People have survived where they could get enough food and could exchange goods with each others. Before cars and airplanes, water was the most important mean of transporting things. Most big civilizations evolved close to water where food could be produced. If you try growing crops in the middle of Australia and then take a boat to sell them, you will realize why almost nobody lives there. In the middle of China there are lot's of rivers.
