Thematic mapping based on individual value

There should be a way to make thematic map based on individual value (text based): think land cover map.

Numerical representation is cool, but can't replace simple coloring based on "text attribute". I just want my forest to be green, agriculture to be yellow.

Hi Greenfield,

Thanks for your inquiry.

The feature to be able to thematically map based text based, individual values is something we have considered at FortiusOne. The feature is one of our many feature requests that our engineers are busy working on. We hope to provide this feature to users in the near future and will alert you when the feature has been finished.

Also, you may still be able to do this if you separate your forest and agriculture data and create two separate data overlays. Then you can load each into your map with the specific color that you want.

Please let me know if you need any help doing this or if you have any more questions about using GeoCommons. You can email me directly at with any file attachments or other questions.

Yeah, this is definitely a great idea (and I see your clear bias for this "GreenField" :)

Curiously - there are a couple of ways to do this categorical styling. You can choose the color each time - but I'm curious if you have a typical "styling" you use that you would like to reuse each time. For example, is Agriculture *always* yellow or does it depend on the other categories and layers? do you have a standard color palette or several?

Your feedback is great and definitely helps build a better GeoCommons!

Thanks Kevin Burke and Andrew Turner for your help. There is a truly sense of a community in here.

There are several workaround as both of your suggestion, we can separate categories to several layer and give each of them a color but this will be cumbersome for map with more than 10 category. We may assign a unique number for each land category and Geocommon will style them within a color-range, but this is not exactly what I looking for.

I'm thinking of a thematic function where I could manually assign color for each category, or better if I could save the styling as a template, but this not a priority.

Again, thank you very much for a great service from GeoCommons. Keep up the good work.
