Customers should be able to opt in to notifications for new Company Updates

Through a lot of experimentation on the GS platform I have figured out that in order to receive company notifications you must go to "Emails & Notifications" then save the preference to be emailed company updates for selected companies.

The issue now is that it does not seem possible for someone who is not on staff or an official company rep to add a given company or product to their profile. Since this is a precursor to enabling update notifications emails this is a bit of a problem. How do you add a company or product as a non official rep or staffer. Am I missing something here?

Your timely response is appreciated as this is a major issue with my community because all of the updates are aimed at the customer, and currently most are not aware of the announcements.

Hi everyone,

I wanted to update you all on our position toward 'Company Updates.' We've decided that we will not be offering functionality that automatically sends these updates to all members of a community via email using a default opt-in approach for all community members. However, we do understand and respect your desire and need for this functionality.

Community members on Get Satisfaction provide their email addresses under our Terms of Service. Get Satisfaction is a network of communities, and as a result, an individual can be a member of multiple communities that all map back to their identity which is uniquely determined by their email address. And under these terms of service, our community members own their email addresses and they have the ability to control their notification settings. We believe it is important that users are in control of the quantity and type of email notifications they receive based on their membership and participation in Get Sat communities.

Our approach regarding Company Updates will remain consistent in that we will show them in-app to all members of a community participating across our Web, mobile and Facebook applications.

We hope that background and context is helpful, but it still doesn't address the problem many of you have expressed so well - people don't always have the time to check in frequently to see if there is a new Company Update - so we need to start taking steps to address this in a way that we will send Company Updates out to users who have opted in to receive them. In other words, we need to make it easier and more visible for community members to subscribe.

We are actively considering two Company Update opt-in notification enhancements:

1. In the User Profile Information / Notifications section, we are considering adding a 'Notify me of all Company Updates' check box.

2. On the Community Overview page, and within the 'Message from [community name]' section we are also considering adding a 'Notify me of all Company Updates' check box under the 'Latest Update' link.

Both of these enhancements would deliver the Company Updates via email to those users who explicitly opt-in.

Like so many of you who have expressed the need for this functionality, we want as many community members who want to receive Company Updates to receive them via email.
