Trolls are able to create an account with the same username as another person.

I am able to create an account with an existing username. This is causing great grief as the other user is using the account to inflame the community. Can this security concern be address ASAP.

Sorry to hear that you guys are having an issue with a troll in the community. Get Satisfaction doesn't enforce unique user names across the platform, but each account does have its own unique URL associated with it. We're hoping to introduce features that encourage users to maintain a single identity across the platform in the future. An example of this would be establishing forms of reputation and being able to leverage that reputation for things in the community.

Moderators on paid plans do have the ability to suspend the participation of problem users, so I'll reach out to the team at WIND Mobile and see if that's something they'd consider. Do you happen to have the URL of the problem user that I can share?

P.S. I think a rep system would be great, I know it can be abused but it usually balances out

No problem! I'm happy to help as best as I can, and I also agree that a rep system would be a great addition to the platform.

I believe that's the URL for your profile... do you happen to have the URL for the user that's impersonating you? If not, do you have a URL to a topic where the problem user is participating? I can try to figure out who it is if I know where to look. :)

Ok, I found the user to be in violation of our broader TOS, and have since banned the IP and removed the content. I've also emailed WIND to let them know. I'm sorry for the frustration but thank you for bringing it to my attention!

He just created a new account on a different IP, so I banned that profile & IP address as well. It'd probably be best if you didn't draw attention to the fact that I'm trying to ban him. :) I feel like he's the type of user that will do everything they can to get around the moderators, and bringing it up will just make him more determined. Definitely send us links to new profiles if he keeps creating accounts.

Hey guys. I was just thinking... Is there any way to trace the IP back to a service provider and contact the user's provider to have them drop his service completely? I'm sure what he is doing is in violation of his service provider's TOS as well.
At least that would put a semi-permanent end to the problem.

Also, I'm pretty sure that posting pornography on a public forum where minors can view it would be a criminal matter, would it not?

He might be using some cheap proxy, maybe geo-blocking would work
It wouldn't matter to most users if the Wind forum was only accessible to Canadian IPs

I'm not sure if there's anything we can do with regards to tracing the IP back... I'll ask a few of our engineers tomorrow to find out. What I do know is that every time he creates an account, he's doing it on a new IP. He could be using a proxy service, but I'm not sure of that either.

I totally should have gone to school for hacking...

What I would propose is you enable security on signups much like Google or Facebook does now. Forces you to signup with a phone number and it texts you the security code. That should prevent 80% of this.

Is there a contact email for Wind specifically for Get Satisfaction issues?

I don't know what type of response I would get with the Wind CSRs.
They handle phone issues and the off-shore CSRs most likely would not even understand what I was referring to.

It would be nice if we had a way to contact a moderator there when we have these issues, currently we just post and hope someone sees it or come here and bug you people

I can remove the posts where your personal information is exposed. If you could please provide the URL to the offending comment (click on the timestamp), that would be incredibly helpful. Otherwise I have to comb through the posts manually and that's a bit difficult.

Also, we've reached out to our internal contact at WIND to let them know about the troll issues in the community. I also noticed that someone from WIND (Giovanni) was participating in a few of your threads earlier tonight so I'll try to reach out to him tomorrow as well.

In my experience, most trolls simply post for the attention. If they stop getting attention then eventually they'll go away. My advice to you, and the rest of those affected by the trolls in this community, is to simply stop engaging with them and report links with offensive content to WIND (or us, if they don't respond). It's not in my job description to moderate our customer's communities, but I'm happy to step-in in order to protect the privacy & safety of the other users in the community. However it makes things a lot harder when the trolls have been drawn into heated back & forths about topics completely unrelated to the community. :)

If you can post URLs to the topics/ comments that have your personal information posted, or other offensive content, we will definitely remove them just as soon as we can, as well as consider suspending the offending user.

Right now he is spouting sexual and degrading remarks, obscenities and generally trying to inflame others. Probably one of the biggest reasons why wind dropped the forum is this guy. I guess since wind washed its hands of the forum, you can remove all his comments and suspend his profile?
