Make "product" pages a better landing page for visitors

  • Idea

  • Implemented
Improve the "product" view so that it can serve as a landing page for feedback specific to that product. Right now if I want to direct people to the best place to offer and view feedback on product x, I have to link to the company page (e.g., TechSmith) rather than the individual product page (e.g., Snagit).

What's missing from the product page? Most importantly, the topic entry box. But it would also be nice to get the full functionality of the "links" section added to the product pages, too:

Daniel,
Thor and I have been talking about how to enable content in communities to support company marketing and product merchandising goals. I don't have specific plans to share but please know that building out capabilities like this are a priority for us.

Yes, please make this a priority. It is much needed for making the site easier for users.

Thanks, Jeff! My desires for this are even more modest. Really just looking for a URL I can point traffic to and say "give us feedback about product x"...right now our only option is the company page, not the product-specific page.

HUGE DITTO on adding the Post a New Topic area on the product page.

It was also help if there were filtered topic pages available for each product - a problem page, question page, idea page, etc.

As an illustration of the awkward current set up:

http://getsatisfaction.com/getsatisfa...
... let's you filter by topic, but does not let you filter by product

http://getsatisfaction.com/getsatisfa...
... let's you filter by product, but does not let you filter by topic (nor create new topics)

It would be cool if there were bespoke links in for each product page too, so that we could better guide customers. For example, on our website a text link saying "get help with a problem" could link to a problem page for that product with the problem topic tab in the topic posting box selected by default. Likewise, a link saying "tell us what you'd like to see in future updates" could link to an idea page for that product with the idea topic tab selected by default.

yes, yes, a hundred times yes! :) The ability to post those links with a focused call to action is crucial.

@FM, once again you have put forward a compelling argument. Thanks for investing your time.

This has been a hot topic for me because I personally want the ability to do the things you articulate in our own community.

FWIW, minutes ago I got off a call with the manager of a new product coming out of our skunk works. We're building a "Give Feedback" link right into the app and would much prefer if it could direct people to a product-specific page rather than the community homepage. #irestmycase :)

Daniel, this is what we want to as well. Build the support, feedback and idea links right into our games and applications which direct people to the most suitable landing page for the product.

Giving this one a bump. We now have ten products in our community but the lack of proper product landing pages is making it difficult to guide new visitors to the best content.

A quick - but huge - improvement would be to simply add the topic creation box from the home page to the top of each product page. Please, please, please!

Yes! Please make the landing pages better, at the very least an input box.
See this kinda duplicate topic I created: http://getsatisfaction.com/getsatisfa...

I'm looking for a long-term solution for my support needs and this is definitely a must.

Also, the links on the sidebar should grab the favicon of each site/page (Soundcloud does this - look at the right sidebar - looks much nicer) http://soundcloud.com/djnickwarren

It's been a year since the original post so I'm giving this one a bump. Do you have any news for us?

@FM @Daniel - No major update on this. We are thinking about changes to both the community and product pages, but I don't have a timeframe to share at this point. One near-term alternative for you is to use the new Engage widgets. You can have a product-specific community experience in widget format for your customers that you can embed directly in your website or product experience. Have you taken a look at what those offer?

Thanks for the update Steven. The new Engage widgets are no good for us as product filtering is not possible on the Connect plan currently.

Oh makes sense. I know there's a separate thread going to add product filtering down to the Connect plan for Engage, so no need to discuss that here. But I'll keep this thread updated on when we make progress on the community/product pages.

@FM and @Daniel as we begin to look at redesigning the community and product pages, would you like to participate in our customer feedback program? (ie sharing your ideas and feedback as we build out our next prototype)

I just made the same request from my implementation team as I am a new Get Sat customer! I think it's a great idea and would be surprised if they can't do it fast.

We're making progress on this idea! We recently released a completely rebuilt mobile experience for communities that includes a much better product (aka category) landing experience, including:

  • Category specific browsing

  • Category scoped search

  • Category scoped conversation posting

  • Category detail page with related links

We'll be adding to this version of the app over time as we make this the default experience for desktop and tablet devices. Given that it's only available on mobile, I'm going to leave this as "Planned" for now.

If you want to learn more about this latest release, here's the blog post:

Thanks for the update Steven. I'm glad that this is finally getting some attention.

I'm curious, do you really see so much traffic to GS from mobile devices that it makes sense to prioritise mobile apps over the standard web experience?

@FM_kingkatt - Good question. We actually didn't explicitly prioritize mobile over the desktop experience. We're re-building the community application and started by replacing our current mobile app. Mobile was just a convenient place to start because our old mobile app lacked support for Android and several other basic interactions. And if you're a "mobile first" purist, it made sense to start there from a design standpoint. This new application isn't just focused on mobile, though. It will evolve to take over the standard web experience as well (for all devices including tablet and desktop) as we make it responsive. We're working on that now.

Official Response
We recently released our new community application, and one of the big enhancements we made was to make the category page (formerly known as "product page") have a better landing page experience.

The category pages now have a category-specific search/ topic creation box available for customers, and we display the most recent announcement (company update) that has been tagged with that category at the top of the page.

The details about the category have been moved to a more prominent location, and there's expanded real estate for all of your related links. Feel free to link to Facebook, Twitter, and any other sites that you wish!

Users can also easily see how many conversations are in a particular category, as well as see all the people who are following the category by clicking on the number next to the "Follow" button. Finally, they can further filter the content in a category by clicking on a conversation type, and then choosing to sort by status, activity, number of replies, and vote count.

We really think categories will play a huge role in the communities that leverage our new application, so you can expect to see further iteration and enhancements added to these pages in the future. :)
