Persistent Vietnamese spam in multiple communities

This conversation is no longer open for comments or replies and is no longer visible to community members. The community moderator provided the following reason for archiving: Issue has not had activity in a very long time. If the issue still persists we will not be fixing it in the current application, so sorry! Our new platform will not have these issues as it's built on different architecture.

These are showing up in batches of 10 over 30-50min windows, and when an account is closed apparently another one is opened to continue. While I've got rather efficient in removing those in the Mozilla Messaging community using the Management View, other communities get heavily hammered as well.

If you look at https://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla you'll notice three pages of that spam before the first "real" topic begins, so that (unmaintained) community is quasi unusable.

It would be appreciated if you get some measures in place to prevent (or at least make it harder) for such spambots to hijack entire communities. Specifically it appears to be too simple to open a new account for such abusive activities.

Thanks again for your attention in this matter.

Hi Geysa.

we're getting significantly spammed here: https://getsatisfaction.com/stumbleup...

These guys are circumventing whatever rate-limiting you have in place and hitting us with 50 or so posts concurrently. Looks like something you'll need to take a look at fairly urgently, maybe?

Hi,

I'm sorry this happened and I have shared this with the rest of the support team so we can investigate. In the meantime, I will check in with the StumbleUpon community and help clean up any spam that might remain.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention so quickly!

Thanks, Amy. We cleaned up the posts and suspended the posters, but they were really posting at such a rate that they entirely disrupted the forum on several occasions.

Hey CH,

I'm so sorry that you had a spam problem this weekend. For the time being, when you experience a spam attack, please feel free to post in the community or email us directly - support@getsatisfaction.com GS employees are able to remove spam in bulk from our communities.

We are taking a look at the spam moderation tools that we offer our customers from both the front and back end, and are considering making changes to the offerings in order to prevent these types of spam attacks from happening in the future. I'll keep you posted on how it progresses.

Thanks, Caty. We handled it, but I'm *really* surprised that your anti-flooding limiters allowed these guys to post numerous posts (50 or so), almost immediately.

We really need you guys to have mechanisms in place that prevent this sort of action up-stream, which is - presumably - bot, in nature. If you need any info, let us know. They actually had accounts with us, as well. (*had*)

Looks like bot-work!

Thanks CH,

In addition to the re-evaluation of the admin tools Caty mentioned, I also know that the engineering team is taking a look at being proactive up stream as well. We apologize that you saw this spam. It seems as though our improvements to SEO and our traffic volume increases of the last few months have attracted some unwanted attention.

As we make improvements, we will let you know!
Jenn

Hit again. 4x 50-odd posts, and they'll have new accounts tomorrow.

I'll probably have it cleaned before you get there, but just in case (and maybe they've been elsewhere, too):

https://getsatisfaction.com/people/he...
https://getsatisfaction.com/people/cc...
https://getsatisfaction.com/people/sw...
https://getsatisfaction.com/people/ji...

Not only is this a tremendous inconvenience to our own support staff, it means that our members - thinking that the threads they are following have been updated - get spammed with numerous email notifications.

Hi,

Thank you for reporting this to us and I'm sorry this happened again. Those users were created from a single IP address, by the way, which I just banned. Our engineers are hard at work on implementing new spam prevention measures. As Jenn said, we will follow up with you as those improvements are made.

Thanks,
Amy

Hi - I just banned this spammer's IP address. Thanks for letting us know and I'm sorry this happened again.

Thanks, no further occurrences since. Those posts are about 90% identical each time, thus maybe employing spam-filter approaches established in mail systems could help here as well to identify such bulk spam based on a few samples.

Keeping fingers crossed...

Thank you so much for your help! I'm taking care of these right now and will check in on the community periodically this weekend. Hopefully, they will get the hint and move on.
