Merged

This conversation has been merged. Please reference the main conversation: Offer "sticky" or "featured" topics.

Please excuse me if I start my own Conversation here, rather than joining an 8 year old thread that GetSatisfaction are obdurately ignoring.

I posted yesterday about the too-inviting Comments box that is turning the YouView Community into something that is very difficult to follow, but the lack of Sticky postings is playing a big part in this as well, and I wanted to lay out why it is such a shame that GetSat have never chosen to implement this.

Especially when I hope it could be easily accomplished with a volatile time stamp that encodes Time Now instead of being a fixed, past, time.

When the new release of YouView, called NextGen, was pushed out to all YouView users without the option, a lot of them who had never used the Community before, joined to express their dismay with it, in varying degrees of ferocity.

One of our members, Champion Keith, launched a Conversation on the first day of that release, using his knowledge of the product to list, extremely comprehensively, all the limitations of, annoyances from, and problems with, this new release.

It should have been a Sticky.

But of course, GetSat don't do Stickies.

If this feature had been available, everyone would have seen this Conversation, and what it covered, and would have likely piled in with a short 'Me Too', or perhaps some additional item they had noticed.

Which Keith would then have added to his original posting.

So we could likely have had a more focussed thread, with very short postings in, and everyone with the issues represented there.

So YouView would still have seen the depth of feeling.

And the normal, day to day requests for help with this or that would not have been swamped, and carried away on the rising tide.

Because that is what we got - everyone posting everywhere, like as not the same problems described over and over again when Keith had already covered them, and everything, even the new postings, vanishing in the rising tide as yet more comments came in.

While Keith's original post, which could have been a powerful focus, sank lower and lower down the pages of Conversations, with only the occasional sporadic bump to bring it into prominence again :-(

What an opportunity missed :-(

Completely share your sentiments Roy.

This feature would be invaluable to our Community.
Just in the last week I've had to push several important announcements related to our new product releases including priceless contributions from our Champions which have become buried in the torrent.

Guys, please bring this back into serious consideration, we dearly need it.

Cheers Rav

Another thing we want a Sticky for in YouView is how to do a soft reset.

I must have cut and paste my bit of boilerplate for this tens if not hundreds of times, as it is always the first thing to try in case of a problem, but it is not described in any of the paper User Guides, nor is it easy to find on the YouView website, especially if you don't even know there is such a thing, or what you should be looking for.

It is just crying out for a Sticky!

Trouble is Roy doing a simple forum search shows people have been asking for stickys for eight years and if it's something that they planned to do I think they would have done by now. As you well know as a regular poster to the youview forum as of late if there was ever a forum that needed that function it's youview forum. Hopefully at some point we see a get satisfaction next generation software to go with youview next generation.

This is the GetSat next generation software.

And it is better to light one candle than stand cursing the darkness.

Especially if my comment on how it might be done, with a volatile, is a goer.

Hi Roy,

I think that part of the issue with this and other features is that we could implement them, but it doesn't mean the Community team would use them. Community strategy goes beyond platform features, and any new features would likely need to be worked into a strategy plan for managing content as well. It sounds like even just merging and forking could solve for some of the issues above. There are a lot of ways to make managing content easier.

It would be great if you could let the YouView team know your concerns and how this feature could help, and then ask them to chime in here so we know if it's something their community team may use on the platform too.

Hi Tashina,

I echo Roy's sentiments and would love to see the sticky feature introduced to our forum software.

We often add important updates to our forum and it's not easy for us to give prominence to this information. We have had to work around some of the constraints of the forum by posting links to highlighted threads above our Welcome message.

This works but is by no means ideal and there are several threads we have which we would like to promote so a sticky option would be ideal.

Is this something we could discuss and implement if the option is available?

Thanks,

Phil

Thanks for posting here, Phil. Getting feedback from Community teams is really important to us because, in the end, you guys are the ones using the features. So we are always wanting to hear how they fit with your work flow, your community plans, etc. This feedback is definitely helpful.

Hi Tashina

We have a new Community Admin on YouView, who has been much more active in forking out postings to new threads, and this has solved a few issues.

I suppose merging could be used to put postings back under the threads they would arguably have been under if Stickies had been available, but it's a bit long-winded, and not ideal.

But yes, Stickies would clearly have to be curated by the Community Team, and maybe the Champions - but it cannot be a facility given to users generally.

I will indeed make the YouView team aware of this discussion, and see what they think.

On the topic of forking, Sarah on YouView just forked a new posting in a very old thread into its own Conversation.

https://community.youview.com/youview...

The thread she forked it from was bumped, possibly by her message explaining the change, but the new Conversation stayed down where the original posting had been made, 16 hours ago.

That seems backwards to me - is it the intended behaviour, and if so, what is the logic here?

And it seems Merge is destructive :-(

Our Community would also benefit from this feature. We would much rather have important posts pinned to the top versus having them lost onto the next page. There are messages that need to stay at the top for a period of time because it is crucial information or "Announcements" that they need to be aware of. When we create a new "Announcement" the old one is lost.
