I’m amused

a black list in menu option ?

ça serait bien de pouvoir bloquer les page comme Adblock Plus, juste en un clic.

  • That sounds like a great idea, but it really isn't.

    Here's an example that might help explain why:

    This is www.911tabs.com (with all bugs blocked):

    { Comscore Beacon, Google Analytics, Quantcast, Right Media }

    This page wants to display Right Media advertising. If you do a View Source, you can see three ad units:

    <!-- BEGIN STANDARD TAG - 728 x 90/468 x 60 - 911Tabs: Mainpage - DO NOT MODIFY -->
    <SCRIPT TYPE="text/javascript" SRC="http://ad.yieldmanager.com/st?ad_type=ad&ad_size=728x90,468x60&section=469917"></SCRIPT>
    <!-- END TAG -->

    <!-- VERTICAL BANNER -->
    <!-- BEGIN STANDARD TAG - 160 x 600/120 x 600 - 911Tabs: Mainpage - DO NOT MODIFY -->
    <SCRIPT TYPE="text/javascript" SRC="http://ad.yieldmanager.com/st?ad_type=ad&ad_size=160x600,120x600&section=469917"></SCRIPT>
    <!-- END TAG -->
    <!-- /VERTICAL BANNER -->

    <!-- BEGIN STANDARD TAG - 300 x 250 - 911Tabs: Mainpage - DO NOT MODIFY -->
    <SCRIPT TYPE="text/javascript"
    SRC="http://ad.yieldmanager.com/st?ad_type=ad&ad_size=300x250&section=469917"></SCRIPT>
    <!-- END TAG -->

    So, while Right Media is clearly what you want to block here, it isn't directly responsible for what you see on screen. We can demonstrate this by unblocking Right Media, and then reloading the page:

    { ADTECH, Comscore Beacon, Google Analytics, Quantcast, Right Media, ToneFuse }

    Two more bugs just appeared: ADTECH and ToneFuse.

    In this case, Ghostery's detection of ADTECH catches an invisible tracker that's trying to spy on you — you'd miss that entirely. So, the best you could hope for would be to block ToneFuse — unless they're also a front for someone else, which they are: DoubleClick, eXelate, Media6Degrees, and Rubicon, among others.
    Now, without making any changes, just reload the page again.

    { ADTECH, Comscore Beacon, Google Analytics, Quantcast, Right Media, Zedo }

    Look what just happened: ToneFuse is gone, this time replaced by Zedo. And now you're back to where you started: you may have thought you had successfully blocked the ads on this page, but you were fooling yourself.

    Ghostery's approach is more effective.

    Even if it were possible for things to work the way you suggest, it runs counter to one of Ghostery's core beliefs: that by working together toward a common goal, we all benefit. Please see

    to learn how you can help achieve this.

    What's the difference? Adblock Plus caters to the "exterminator" mentality: "I don't care what this is, I just want it dead." Ghostery is good for those who want to know more. What works for them isn't necessarily desirable for us.

    The two products may offer overlapping functionality, but we're not trying to compete with each other. Use whichever one you like best. Or both. Or neither.
