Big headache with the 5.0.3 update (Firefox 23.0.1 Mac)

Recently, Ghostery has become too often a PITA (it used to just "work;" no longer), but I really don't have the patience for this new update, the 5.0.3. The latest 5.0.3 seems to have been a more than routine update and it is a big PITA, so I have reverted to the previous version. First, and easily solved, the Ghostery icon has been moved--no idea why--but much more important, settings which I have been using successfully until now no longer work for a site I often visit. I really don't have the patience to comb through to see just what has changed, whether it's the addition of some tracker or cookie newly blacklisted, something new in redirect blocking or something else entirely.

But basically, can someone please tell me what has changed or where the release notes are. I'm not finding any.

Are there new developers now? I don't recognize the names. Do they know what they're doing?

    Hi ghost, thanks for using Ghostery.

    The biggest change is that Ghostery has been moved on to a new platform provided by Mozilla: Addon-SDK (or Jetpack). The rest of the innards should have been similar or the same.

    Now, if you want us to help you out, you'll need to provide a bit more feedback as to whats happening on your system. which settings did not get transferred? What kind of problems are you running into on the site you are referring to?

    I've reinstalled the 5.0.3 and I'm not making any headway whatsoever. There may be more problem sites, but the site I'm having trouble with in particular, and the only one I've tried so far, is http://www.newyorker.com/ where, until the 5.0.3, in order to get the 5 rotating selections at the top of the page I needed to allow trackers Livefyre and Omniture. That no longer works; that top section of the page is now entirely blank, even if I allow those two, as well as the only new tracker I'm seeing, which appears to be Proficientz.

    I don't think anything has changed for the settings in Advanced. I'm using the defaults, as I had been doing with the previous version.

    It may be a new cookie being blocked, but as there are hundreds I can't possibly test each one to find out.

    So, I'm putting the ball back in your court. Perhaps you will be able to locate just what is blocking that section of the nyorker page; I can't. And I don't want to whitelist or pause blocking for the site entirely.

    No idea what's going on and I'm reverting back again to the 2.9.6 until I know more.

    Well, unblocking Google Anlaytics, Livefyre, and Omniture allows this page to show the right content at the top. I'll need to take a closer look under the hood here, tho this may take a while.

    ghost, Ghostery breaks stuff, that happens if you block lotsa stuff. If you suspect that Ghostery is in fact screwing up, we've allowed several ways for you to proceed. You can whitelist the site, pause Ghostery, or determine the trackers that should be unblocked on this site only.

    Yeah, allowing Google Analytics, plus the other two, loads that content in the 5.0.3. Never thought to try that because Google Analytics didn't need to be allowed in the 2.9.6 for that to load. That is weird.

    Would be good if you can figure that one out, when you get a chance. The less I have to allow, the better.

    Felix, I'm posting this new issue and possible bug here because hitting Continue, after posting this in Report a Problem goes nowhere. I've tried posting there repeatedly.

    Please move it over there if you can.

    I may be mistaken and this is possibly only a Firefox thing, but Ghostery 5.0.4 with Firefox 23 or 24 appears to be responsible for repeatedly spamming Console with hundreds of these messages per second. Just noticed, or would have reported this with the upgrade from the 2.9.6 to the 5.0.4 (or the 5.0.3.) I don't remember seeing any of these messages with the 5.0.3 (or the 2.9.6), but it's possible the 5.0.3 was doing this as well--I don't bother looking in the logs unless there's some noticeable problem. I am concerned, however, since this is filling up the logs with these repeated error messages and consuming drive space.

    OSX 10.6.8

    I think I've pinpointed the issues here between 2.9.x and 5.0.x: surrogate sub-system in Ghostery has changed a little bit for the 5.0 release. In 2.9.x surrogates are dropped "in-place" as the page loads, while 5.0.x passes them through a message to the injected page. This is simply too late for the purposes of surrogates and additionally, this created the problem originally described in the topic. (Eric, this also applied to the sailflow.com report).

    Good news is that this wasn't the only heads up that we got on surrogate sub-system defect, so we've moved up the change to the next release (5.0.5 hopefully). The beta should be out in a few days and it has a re-worked surrogate system.
