For the last few updates, when there are new trackers added to the list, they are not automatically blocked. The user has to open Ghostery options and click on "All" again to start blocking the newer trackers. I would expect that most users are not doing this, and so are not fully benefiting from the update. This behavior is observed with Firefox 3.5.x on Windows 2000.
It would be nice to have a checkbox allowing the automatic blocking of all newly added trackers.
And thank you for doing so much already!

That's a great observation Elmer. It is important to us to make the process easy & I like the suggestion for a checkbox upon upgrade as a confirmation. Duly noted & thank you for the suggestion!

This is just the feature I was looking for.
I would like an option choose if you want to block all new added bugs by default or not. -

I asked for this over a year ago and nothing has changed. Would it spoil their stats gathering opprtunity? Makes you think....

That is my problem too. I have 3 computers at home with 2-3 OS for each. I use all of them Firefox with Ghostery. I always click to "all" button from options every time i open the OS.
Save me please ! :) -

Has this been implemented now?
My suggestion would be to:
activate/block all newly listed trackers/bugs by default
and if
a certain bug/tracker has been deselected by the user previously, to respect that choice -
-
I can't see that this has been implemented yet. After every update I have to "Select all" and the deselect the ones that should be allowed. Very frustrating...
It should work exactly as "icerabbitje" describes it... -
-
Hi icerabrrit and jorand, thanks for using Ghostery.
Ghostery will check if you are blocking all trackers and if so, will block any new bugs when an update occurs. If you have some trackers unblocked, then any new trackers are merely imported in and not blocked. In Firefox Ghostery, there is also a bug that will also not block all new trackers on an automatic update. This bug is logged and were releasing a fix very soon. -
-
Is icerabbitje's suggestion a planned enhancement? Using Chrome, I currently block all bugs except one. Whenever I notice that there's an update, I have to manually select all and then deselect the one bug I need to allow. This is workable, but will become untenable if I ever accumulate a larger list of allowed bugs.
-
-
I agree with mathuaerknedam because I have some unblocked bugs that I want to keep unblocked. It's not exactly a hassle with the bubble and all to find out which new bugs need to be blocked. And it gives you the chance to see what they are and make a constructive decision on whether to block or not. Not all bugs need to be blocked and some are actually quite useful: for instance, I logged on to this forum via Facebook Connect - couldn't have done that if it'd been blocked!

Hi all. As mentioned before, we currently only have a hidden default which will block any new bugs if the user had everything set to be blocked. In the future we might offer an option for updates to block all by default, but before we get to that, we will be modifying Ghostery to allow users to select and block companies according to their category. This is coming in the next few versions.
-
-
When you use the auto-updating bug list feature (or at least when you click "Update now"), it would be nice if new bugs were blocked by default. Or there was an option determining the default.
As far as I can tell now (on Safari and Chrome on Mac), if I have a few bugs unblocked and update the list, I have to go in and manually block the new bugs. Which is a pain since now I have to remember which I'd unblocked before.

Please make it able to run completely maintenance-free.
When the database is updated then please block by default all new entries. After using it for a while I find it quite annoying that I have to manually set all newly discovered trackers to blocked every few weeks. There should be an option to have it block them all automatically so I could simply install this addon on a few PCs and don't have to manually maintain them all every few weeks to update the blocking list. It should work like AdBlock and do its job automatically without the need for permanent maintenance.

To follow-up, I don't care about having the ability to "block companies according to their category", as this will still likely mean some new bugs don't get blocked. Here's how it should work, IMO:
- if you have all bugs blocked, block any new ones during an update
- if you have no bugs blocked, do not block any new ones during an update
- if you have some bugs blocked, block any new ones during an update
This is very simple, understandable logic. There could optionally be a setting to alter the behavior of #3, but honestly, keep it simple and just apply sane defaults like those I've listed. The current behavior isn't sane however, from a user-experience point of view*. It just makes me want to never update the bug list, which defeats the whole purpose...
* Do most people block a majority of bugs, unblocking only a select few? Or vice versa, do they unblock most, blocking only some? I'd believe it's the former, which is why my suggestion makes sense. If it's the latter however, I guess the current behavior might be most useful.-
Hi Joshua,
Thanks for elaborating. Both categories and a "block by default" checkbox are in the works. We might end up with individual "block by default" controls for each category. -
-
-
-
-
Hoping to see the "block all new bugs by default" implemented soon.
Joshua said it more clearly than I did last year.
Personally I don't see a need for block by category, or company, or ... I only allow 2 so far to enable commenting. -
-
The thing is whenever I update Ghostery with the new bug/cookie list, it doesn't automatically select the new added bug/cookie. I usually have all 3pes selected then whenever I go to certain sites, I unblock whatever 3pes is blocking certain content from showing. Instead I have to keep on selecting all to have the new ones enabled and individually deselect the ones I've already deselected to unblock. Please have on the next beta or whatnot to automatically tick the new updated bug/cookie list and keep the ones i've manually deselected for certain sites.

I just don't understand why you want to be tracked by ANY site!
I now use "noscript" it's far better than ghostery and doesn't need continuous maintenance.-
Not everybody has the option to block anything and everything.
For instance, if you participate by commenting on articles on certain websites or blogs and they use a 3rd party service; then you have to allow that service in Ghostery. Otherwise you will not be able to comment and possibly not even see the commenting option at all. -
-
Hi taylor123,
Ghostery tracks third-party page elements (scripts, images, Flash objects and iframes), all capable of tracking.
Some of the elements Ghostery tracks provide useful functionality, such as commenting (Disqus) or videos (Brightcove). You might or might not be OK with Facebook/Twitter/Google+ buttons, analytics elements on your favorite pages, ...
If you choose to block everything with Ghostery, Ghostery should already honor that decision and continue blocking everything on updates.
Could you tell us about your NoScript setup? How did you set it up so that it doesn't require "continuous maintenance"? -

Noticed this issue again today.
My Firefox is now 9.0.1 and Ghostery updated to 2.7.
Looking at the categorized 3pes in options I had between 2 to several dozen items that were not blocked. So, it would seem this is still an issue, as I'm a block it all kinda guy and the only things I've needed to allow, have been Disqus and Omniture.- view 1 more comment

After manual or auto-update of the tracking lists in Ghostery for Firefox (stable or current beta), new tracker protection is not enabled. I would prefer to be protected from all new trackers as they are added. The current default takes the "auto" out of "auto-update".

I would like Ghostery to block all 3pes and all cookies unconditionally, however, after updates the new additions are not automatically blocked. As a result, I have to manually open Ghostery options and keep checking the boxes to ensure full blocking is enabled.
Can you add an option to block everything by default, unless explicitly excluded? Thank you.

I'd like ghostery to always block all known bugs. When the bug list gets updated, I want all new bugs to be included for blocking by default.
But there seems to be no such option. Everytime the bug list gets auto updated and new bugs arrive in the list, they are disabled from blocking by default and need to be activated manually (which I do only every couple of weeks).
Does anybody have a solution? Or would this rather be a feature request?

i uncheck two of the bug list entries. but when it updates, the buglist entries newly added are unchecked. so update doesn't update! i have to manually update, click check all, click to uncheck the two (brightcove, used for video on mit.edu and elsewhere, and friendfinder network, annoying but i need access to a couple of those sites).

Hi,
An option to auto-block bugs which have been downloaded during an update would be nice.
Reading another post it seems that it only does this if the block all bugs box is ticked. After an update i tick that box then have to untick 2 bugs needed by websites I use (Google Widgits & Facebook Connect). I don't want to add these 2 websites to the "not block these sites" list as all the other bugs provided by them I like having blocked.
thanks

Default block new trackers/ coockies / widgets.
Now when new items come available in the library they are not blocked by default.
and we must update the blocking options each time. You have to go down each list and check the new ones. or even the check all from each category.
If the new items would be standard in blocking mode you would only need to change your options when you find something not working for you.
Or work the complete way around, block everything except the checked ones would work too, you should have more to block and allowed anyway.

I love the bug updating. I would love to use the check box to select them all. However, I also use sites like eBates and FastWallet that rely on those affiliate links for me to get credit posted to my account.
It would be nice if I had a way to permanently "protect" specific bugs so I could take advantage of the ability to click and select all.

The new options page user interface already launched in Ghostery for Firefox is on the way to Ghostery for Chrome.
There you will be able to only show trackers new since last update (at which point using "select all" will select only those trackers), and to tell Ghostery to automatically select new trackers to be blocked. -

Nearly every time Ghostery updates its bug list, new companies show up. Even though I've told Ghostery to block all, these new companies are not blocked until I go to Ghostery options, blocking, and click "All" again.
This means I need to continually fiddle with Ghostery's settings, rather than being able to just "set it and forget it".
When new companies are added to the list, they ought to be either blocked by default, or marked as "new" (meaning I haven't yet reviewed them to say block or not) with a separate option to let me control whether "new" companies are blocked or not.

I asked them to fix it in 2009 and they are still fiddling about with half-way-house solutions. It's clear they don't want to do it.
Just use "no script" it's maintenance free and does what we need, that is block all trackers.automatically.-
Ghostery can't choose what to block for the user because Ghostery is not a mindreader. Some users like social buttons. Many users want to keep comments widgets and video players.
NoScript, while excellent, has an entirely different set of goals and priorities. There is no need to troll here. -
-

In the configuration, in the blocking options, I have check all the checks because I want to block all.
However, when ghostery is updated, not block the elements that are found in the update, so I have to check the new manually. is it possible that ghostery block automatically this new elements? Perhaps including a check that ask to the user if he wants to include the new elements that are founded in the update or not. in this way it would be possible to have the actual behavior and the new one.
Thanks.

Awesome program. Here are a couple of suggestions to make it even better...
When a new bug appears in my bug list it the "Block this Bug" box is unchecked by default. I have two ideas:
(1) Make them checked by default, then if I have a problem on a page, I can unblock specific bugs or add that page to my site white-list. Alternatively (and even better) make it a user option for new bugs: To Block, or Not to Block.
In addition:
(2) When a new bug is discovered, let it have a third status like "New" or "Undecided." Still apply the rule from (1) to that bug, but flag it in such a way that I can tell if I have looked at it and made a specific decision about that particular bug. I may unblock a bug because it does something useful for me, but when I get new bugs I have to go through the whole "unblocked" part of the list because I may not remember when ones I have looked at previously.
I am using v. 2.2.2 on Chrome.
Thanks!
Michael

Currently, if all trackers are blocked, new trackers are blocked when the tracker list is updated. However, if any trackers are not blocked, new trackers are not blocked. I would like to be able to mark particular trackers as unblocked (in my case, Disqus) with all new trackers automatically being blocked.
This is basically an extension of this idea.

How to reproduce:
1. Open the extension’s preference page
2. Enable bug list auto-updating, and Enable bug blocking
3. Check the box to block all bugs (top of the list)
4. Uncheck one checkbox for a tracker
5.
Expected result:
New trackers received in the update to be blocked by default.
Actual result:
When you add one exception for a tracker, you change the default for new trackers received via automatic list updates from block to allow.
There should be an option to block all new list additions by default.
