Change block counter

Show counter only for non-blocked trackers. Or at least have a sepparate counter. Otherwise I need to check every website to see if there is an unblocked tracker, only to realise that all of them are. Thanks

  • Your suggestion makes sense for that use case, but I don't think that it really matches with what ghostery is trying to do. We are not primarily a blocking extension. Our main goal is to make tracking more transparent, and one of the ways we do that is showing the total number of trackers for every site that you visit. If most sites just say zero or one, it doesn't really tell you anything about those sites anymore. What I usually do is set the alert bubble(purple box) to the bottom right corner and the timer for 3 seconds. Then I can see if anything is unblocked and the bubble quickly disappears.

That being said, I think we are considering adding an option to show only unblocked trackers in the purple box. Maybe we could add the same option for the counter badge on the icon. Then users who want this behavior can specifically choose those options.

Also, once you've made a choice to block a tracker, it will always be blocked unless you have made exceptions for specific sites. So you shouldn't have to worry about things being unblocked unless you specifically made the choice to allow it. Check the full list of trackers on the options page(there is even a way to filter that list by blocked or unblocked) and confirm that you are blocking everything you want to. Just make sure "Block new trackers by default" on the advanced tab of the options page is checked so that you automatically block newly added trackers.

  • I understand your reply and it's nice to know how many trackers a website has (blocked or not).

What about showing two counters under the little ghost? Like to the right in red colour how many are blocked, and to the left in blue how many are unblocked (the same behaviour as the blocking slider so to speak).

Or perhaps in parenthesis how many are unblocked, although this could be less intuitive.

    Thanks for the quick reply!
    • I forgot to address that point :)

In chrome/opera/safari that number is called a badge and we're limited to one of them, which can only have 4 characters and be one color. In firefox they don't even provide that functionality, so we had to come up with a way to get it to work at all.

But we'll look into adding specific options for showing only unblocked tracker counts. Thanks for the feedback!
