I’m unsure

Cookie protection question.

I do not understand how new cookie protection works with few major tracking cookies? Maybe I do not understand nuances of cookie management. When I see Google cookie in Firefox cookie manager, it is just one item(google.com). It contains everything from google search options to google analytics tracking data. How your extension treats this cookie when you try to block google analytics from writing stuff? Because you said that cookie is removed when tracking data is accessed or changed. Will it remove everything else?

As I said before I am only worried about this behaviour in relation to Google, Yahoo, MSN, Amazon and Bing cookies that store safe and tracking data in the same cookies.

  • Hey Boris, as usual, thanks for using Ghostery.

Everything you say is correct with a single exception: cookie data (usually) is not stored on the same domain for the same purposes. For example, Google.com will have a cookie that relates to your account with Google only, Google Analytics doesn't leave a cookie at all, and finally, any behavior information would be stored on either doubleclick's domains or syndication/ad services domains Google handles (google-syndication.com). Its the same with other big players: Yahoo has RightMedia and AdInterax that Ghostery looks for and protects.

That said, Ghostery leaves alone the root cookies (first party cookies for the listed players), so your services that you use with them are not affected.
