Google Analytics is now offering multiple versions with different capablities:
- urchin.js is the old script
- ga.js is the new version with expanded site usage capabillities
- stats.g.doubleclick.net/dc.js is a clone of ga.js but offering remarketing capabilities since running on the doubleclick.net domain
- analytics.js is the new script for Universal Analytics, the platform allowing to reconcile users across multiple devices / browsers through site centric uuid
As you can see, there could be reasons for end users to allow being tracked by a version but not by an other one, and thus it would be a good idea for Ghostery to:
- make the distinction
- allow to chose which one is allowed, which one is blocked
-
You could even offer the option to replace silently stats.g.doubleclick.net/dc.js by the standard ga.js which would be the best option for the site owner and the end user.

Hi OK, thanks for posting.
We've thought about breaking up GA for this, but from our perspective, vast majority of the users don't care which particular version of GA they encountered. We'll leave this topic open to see if others feel the same, and if there are enough votes, we can implement this.
That said, its possible to configure your own installation of Ghostery to do this, tho this requires a somewhat technical approach. Let me know if you want details. -

I agree that users don't care, just because they don't know the differences and the impact: Ghostery could offer some understanding with tracking names like
- Google Analytics site centric
- Google Analytics enabling remarketing
- Google Analytics cross device
- Google Analytics cross device enabling remarketing (not yet available)
Actually cross device happens in analytics.js only when a given parameter exists in the tracking beacon
What do you think ?-
I agree with Felix; users don't care. I would just reclassify Google Analytics (in all its forms) from "benign" to "invasive." They poisoned their own well — I have no sympathy here.
