HI, there seems to be a problem with Ghostery and the latest firefox update 3.5.7. According to Bugzilla mutiple users are reporting this problem
THe problem: firefox stays active after closing the GUI firefox stays active and restarting gives an error ( there's already an instance running [with high CPU load]) Have to close firefox 3.5.7.manually (task manager) The problem doesn;t occur all the time (maybe dependent of the visited sites?) 2.02 didn't solve the problem
Firefox 3.5.7 & Ghostery error; have to manually unload firefox before restarting

Add me to the list of users who have this problem in FF 357. Running WinXPproSP3/32. Hope David can fix it.

Anybody there or are we trying to contact ghosts ?
*"Why do a bug report if there's no feedback" do I ask myself*-

What does a druggie rapist have to do with this issue?

I've reported the same problem today - windows XP Home, SP3, Firefox 3.5.7 - definitely pinned down to ghostery. Totally solved with ghostery disabled. Looking forward to being able to enable it again when its fixed.
-
-
I have this problem too. Please fix it: I would like to be able to use Ghostery again.
-
-
I've this problem on two MS Windows XP systems too. Ghostery is deactivated on all accounts. Please fix the add on!
-
-
I have this problem as well. When trying to shut down or restart XP I get a message that says "the program n is not responding" and gives the end task button. This plugin also breaks the hotmail gadget for the igoogle homepage. It causes the gadget to open to a 404 error and you have to manually click the inbox link to see your mail.
-
-
I'm having it in Windows 7 too. It does quit on it's own after a while (never timed, but longer than it should by far!)
-
-
I have the same problem and I no longer care now I know it is the same for all of us. I let ghostery activated and I just kill the process firefox when necessary.
I just notice that it is always the same sites that make the incident occur or not.
But I am ignorant and cannot tell what specially contain the incriminated sites.
An enquiry ought to be easily done by ghostery team and I am confident that a next update will fix the bug without loss of efficacity in filtering and protection.
The existence of the bug prooves that odd things occur on numerous sites. -
-
-
I just tried it.
it seems to work better though on some sites it still sometimes has to be manually killed or it is very long to close , CPU busy 100%.
But FF 3.6 is incompatible with Norton IPS ( intrusion prevention system) plugin .
I hope for a future version compatible with my antivirus -
-
The problem exists on 3.6 exactly the same as it does on 3.5.7
-
-
-
-
I posted my problem after updating to 3.6. The Hotmail igoogle gadget bug is still definately there too.
-
-
Also happening in Linux Mint 8/Ubuntu 9.10. Have to kill the firefox and firefox-bin processes using System Monitor. It occurred in Firefox 3.5.7 and continues to occur in 3.6.

Question for eveyone - are we ALL using Adblockplus as well as Ghostery?
Anyone tried removing ABP and seeing if error persists?-
Sorry, NOT using Adblockplus here.
-
-
-
-
I disabled all the alerts in Ghostery, and it seems to have corrected the issue, and yes, I'm running AB+.
-
I'm a liar...still not gone...so I disabled Ghostery until a solution is found.
-
-
-
-
-
-
I am using adblock plus with ghostery. Just disabled ghostery. will see what happens. If problem persists, will disable adblock plus and REenable ghostery to see.....
-
-
I don't think Adblock plus makes any difference - some people reporting it with, some without.
-
-
-
-
When I installed and started using Ghostery I would get the "End program - n 'This program is not responding' " at shutdown. Annoying, but not a show stopper. There is no process named "n" anywhere in Windows. I will try to stop Firefox manually before shutdown. It does scare people because they do a search and find references to 'n.exe" which has been identified as malware.

Same problem - macbook 10.4.11 ; FF 3.5.7 - have to always Force Quit.
Disabled Ghostery - all ok. Too bad. Working w/o Ghostery for now... -
-
Hi,
same problem here using ghostery on both Windows Vista 32bit and Windows 7 32bit with firefox 3.5.7 and now with 3.6. -

ahhh, no wonder the developer never replied to these exiting/high cpu usage firefox questions. That blows, I'm not going to use it anymore then.

Does this mean that Ghostery is a busted flush?-
I don't know what it means but Betteradvertising serves the civil-users AND the advertisment-industry I think that's very conflicting all GHostery users I know use it to keep the advertisement industry as far away as possible.
NOt to make better advertisements. ..... -

Hello,
I'd like to note that by no means have you lost a great Plug in. We at Better Advertising love Ghostery - which is why we're working hard to make it a better plug in at what it's already doing. Optimization without destroying any of the incredible work that Ghostery's already doing to ensure that we're all protected from malicious bugs. We provide a better tool, you give us feedback on what's working. We're listening to your opinions & appreciate the feedback. More to come very soon. Happy Friday!- view 3 more comments

Rose, I appreciate the advice, but what is the starting page for this? My home page is Google. Where do I go to find Tools, Add-ons, etc?
-
Absolutely Howard. We're making some great improvements to Ghostery & I hope you'll consider us in the future. On your home page using Firefox - look at your navigation bar (begins with the Firefox text icon) then from that bar, select Tools. From the drop down, select Ad-ons ( third choice in the drop down menu) Once selected, a list of your Ad-ons will populate. Select 'Disable' on the right hand side of the Ghostery plug in & re-start Mozilla upon completion. You'll be all set.

Hi, I've begun to get really fond of Ghostery, I'm starting to use it to block web trackers heavily now. But then I noticed this high CPU usage when closing Firefox, so I began debugging by disabling and re-enabling add-ons, until I got to Ghostery and found it was the one causing it. Please get it fixed, as I want to start using it again. Details: Ghostery 2.0.2, Firefox 3.5.7, Windows XP SP3.

Yjkhan,
Please see Felix comment above - send us your contacts (not shared with anyone or used for any other purpose) and I'll send you a patch to resolve the issue.

does anyone knows of an alternative plug-in to ghostery?
As soon as I found that it was sold to the "enemy" I removed the sucker from all Firefox installations. -

Why would anyone want to use Ghostery after this? An add-on that is supposed to protect you from bugs has a big one. What warranty is there that any future problems will be fixed in a timely manner? I have read the Ghostery terms and conditions. I can understand why Ghostery, like any other software company, would not want to be liable for all financial damages caused by its defects. But before using it, I would expect Ghostery to spell out its quality control procedures and repair policies, so that a user can judge whether such a problem is likely to occur again.,
